Why Make Dog Treats
For the same reason everyone loves warm, fresh bread versus store bought. Homemade just tastes better! Plus you are in control of every single ingredient that goes into your dogs mouth. As pet parents we need to have a good baseline understanding of easy and healthy ways to take care of pups. Knowing how to make healthy and whole dog treats is one of the easiest things to do for our dogs. Specially in this day-and-age of pet food and treat recalls.
Some Things To Watch Out For

When preparing homemade dog treats, make sure you take into account any allergies that your pet has to specific ingredients. Avoid adding any ingredient that your pet has reacted poorly to in the past. If you are experimenting with new flavors, feed the treat to your dog in small quantities and observe how he reacts to it before you distribute an entire treat.
Store your homemade dog treats in an airtight container and place them in the freezer. Allow the treat to thaw for 10 to 20 minutes prior to serving your dog. These homemade dog treats will last for up to six months in the freezer.
Does your dog have a favorite treat? Wed love to see a photo of her enjoying it! You can post it in the comments below as well as your favorite homemade dog food recipes.

Understanding How A Dehydrator Works
A dehydrator is a small appliance that uses heat and a built-in fan to flow heated air around items on perforated racks. The warm moving air slowly pulls moisture from the items, drying them out until theyre at the desired state of dehydration. Dehydrators come in different shapes, sizes, and qualities. At minimum, look for one with even heat distribution and multiple temperature settings for safe and versatile use. Using a dehydrator is very energy efficient compared to an oven.
How To Make Chicken Jerky For Dogs In Dehydrator
Dehydrated chicken makes great and easy to prepare homemade treats for dogs. However, dont feel like you are limited to just using chicken. You can use other meats such as turkey, lamb, beef, or even ground meats to make jerky treats. Just follow the settings recommended for your dehydrator for dehydrating meats, but leave out any marinades or spices your pup should not eat.

Three Ingredient Vegan Gluten Free Dog Treats / Plant Philosphy
Looking for a simple grain free dog treat recipe? This is an awesome recipe good for dogs with grain allergies. If youve got some oat or rice flour, peanut butter, and a couple of bananas youre good to go. Does it get much easier than that?
Three ingredient dog treats: gluten free, vegan, 30 minute cook time.
Recipes Recommend: Baking For 30 Minutes
Things I did:
- Used the toaster oven set to bake, instead of the full oven.
- Various baking times.
- The toaster oven has worked great for the small batches of treats I make!
- I flip them halfway through with a fork or popsicle stick.
- 30 minutes seemed like an insanely long bake time for such small treats, but it turns out thats about right approximately 15 minutes on each side for small squares.
- Bake time will depend on how large you make your treats and how crispy you want them to end up.
- Using parchment paper for lining the baking sheet. I found the treats would stick to foil, even after being baked.
Some tips:
- Crispy treats seem to last longer outside of the fridge. Softer treats are better to hide pills in.
- The canned food Ive been experimenting with is Royal Canin GI Low Fat other types may give you different results. This is in no way an ad/endorsement/recommendation for that brand. Honestly, the jury is still out on how well its working. Its just what Quijotes vet wants him eating while we try to narrow down the cause of his tummy troubles.
At the end of the day, you just have to figure out what works best for you and your pup.

Make A Homemade Dog Food Treat
You may wonder, why use your dogs everyday food for a dog food treat, especially when there are so many recipes for making your own homemade dog cookies?
Well, three reasons include:
- Prescription Diet – Your vet may prescribe a certain diet due to your dogs health, age or recent surgery. You are probably limited to what treats, if any, can be given.
- Picky Eater – Other times it is a self imposed limitation because your dog is a picky eater. If that is the case, using their own preferred food should go over very well.
- Easy Recipes – Making treats from your dog’s food is quick and simple. You are also guaranteed to have the ingredients on hand.

Recipes & Ideas:
Why Homemade Dog Treats
Homemade dog treats are healthier! With just a dehydrator you can customize exactly what kinds of yummies your dog is eating. Dehydrating treats gives you full control over portions & ingredients without additives that could upset your pups stomach. Additionally, homemade treats are generally cheaper and healthier than store bought ones. Keep in mind, these are treats and should not replace the dogs usual meals as the dehydrating process does remove some of the nutrients from the food.

Healthy Homemade Dog Treats
Our animals are part of our family. So much so that they often get more space in bed than I do! And sometimes its nice to head into the kitchen and whip up a little special treat for the fur-children in my life, just like I do for the human members of my family. Enter homemade dog treats!
Creating this recipe was a fun little project that our puppies were very happy to help test! The resulting treat is quick and easy to make, has some nice nutritional boosts for your dog, and wraps up beautifully to gift to your dog .
A caveat here: there are tons of reports about what and what not to feed your dog. Some people say milk is okay. Others say its a no-no. Some swear that garlic is a death sentence. Others say theyve been feeding their dog garlic for years. Some feed their dogs only raw meat, others swear thatll ruin your dogs digestion. As with all decisions regarding the health of your loved ones, its probably best to check with a trained health care professional when introducing any kinds of new foods. A vet can give you a definitive yes or no on what should end up in your pups bowl.
That being said, one of our dogs has a historically weak tummy, and these treats didnt cause a hint of an issue with her. Shes happy as a furry clam.
I snuck in a few ingredients that are nutritional superstars for our canine friends. I want the furry members of our family to stick around as long as possible, and if I can give some treats that help with that? Im all over it.
Single Ingredient Bits And Bites

Although we tend to think of the food that we feed our animals as separate from what we eat ourselves, many of the items in your pantry are suitable for dogs. There are plenty of items your dog will love that wont make them gain weight or fill them up with empty calories.
Grains Low on time and energy? Whip up a quick batch of brown rice or quinoa. Perfect for dogs with digestive issues, whole grains offer quick nourishment and can soothe stomach issues. Oatmeal is another gentle meal for your pet in a pinch.
Eggs High in protein and other nutrients, eggs are a great snack for dogs. They can eat eggs raw, or you can whip up their breakfast along with your own. It doesnt matter if you boil, fry or scramble, but avoid any seasoning.
Peanut Butter Peanut butter is a fantastic snack for dogs. Not only do they love the taste, it gives them a protein-packed activity because its sticky and takes a long time for them to consume. This is especially true if you serve it in a Kong or similar toy. Its important to remember, though, that nut butters arent interchangeable. Almond butter, for example, isnt toxic for dogs, but it may upset dogs with delicate stomachs. Almonds are not easily digested by dogs, so youre better off sticking to peanut butter.
Pumpkin Pumpkin is another great option for dogs. Its high fiber content helps keep them regular, preventing both diarrhea and constipation. Pumpkin also contains key nutrients like beta carotene and vitamin A.

Soft Homemade Treats For Older Dogs
Is your furbaby more of a fur-senior? If your pup is getting older, his teeth can be more sensitive and prone to breakage. Try these soft treats for a change. Mix together 1 2.5-ounce jar of beef baby food 4 teaspoons of dry milk powder, and 4 teaspoons of cream of wheat. Shape them and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
You can switch the beef for chicken, ham, or turkey as well.
Truth About Commercial Dog Treats
Theres a lot wrong with the commercial offerings on the market. Many of the more common brands contain harmful preservatives like BHA, as well as excessive amounts of wheat flour or brewers yeast.
These ingredients dont do much aside from adding extra calories to your dogs diet and increase their risk of developing an allergic reaction.
