The million dollar question is, if pet food manufacturers cant prove the origin of their premixes, why dont they test every batch of food?
The answer might shock you: it is so cost prohibitive that its actually cheaper for them to pay the lawsuits from our dead pets than it is to test their product.
In January 2011, the FDA ;finally stepped in with their;Food Safety Modernization Act. Some provisions took effect immediately but to date have had a minimal impact on most pet food manufacturers.
FSMA provisions already;in effect include emergency FDA access to a companys records and mandatory recall authority for the FDA if a company refuses to voluntarily recall a product. The agency also has to find reasonable probability the product is adulterated and that consumption of the food will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
As part of;the focus on preventive controls, FSMA is planning an FDA inspection schedule. High-risk facilities, which FDA has yet to define, will be inspected at least every three years, while any facility not deemed high risk will be inspected at least every five years. Any sort of complaint or safety problem will increase the likelihood of more frequent inspections or re-inspections, for which the company will probably have to cover the costs.
As part of FSMAs Foreign Supplier Verification Program, every importer must establish a plan that verifies the foreign supplier complies with a hazard analysis and preventive controls program.
These Commercial Dog Foods Source From China
Now listen to this.; China has cornered the market on producing vitamins, supplements and even many of the inert ingredients that our pharmaceuticals are made with.; Yes, I have issues with products that come from China, but it is really hard to avoid them.; The big issue here is that when pet food products have that long list of vitamins and supplements that are added to their products, they are added because the food is processed so much that its nutrients are processed out.; Basically, our pets are living off of those supplements only.; Our dogs need their nutrients to come from the food itself, NOT from all the synthetic garbage that is added to over-processed products which are void of any nutritional value by itself.; Pets who are eating commercial diets are getting their nourishment from those vitamins which are acting as an alternative to real food.; I am not opposed to supplements.; I add some supplements to my dogs food because I cannot provide fresh kill for their meals.; The best form of nutrition is raw which is most nutritious right after the kill before extended time, exposure to air and the natural elements affect the nutrients.
To learn more about vitamin premix you can read my articles:; Whats REALLY in Dog Food? and Shocking Dog Food Research Study.; To learn more about raw feeding, I have many articles, but Dog Food All About it covers quite a bit and I include information about what I have been feeing my girls.

Making Sure Your Favorite Brands Are Safe
Despite the chicken jerky travesty, it’s important to remember that not all food and products from China are dangerous.;;As I learned when shopping at local pet stores, we’re hard-pressed to buy anything that wasn’t made in China. ;What’s important to me is having a clear understanding of what my dogs are eating, which is why I feed raw. ;Although 90% of the food my dogs eat is homemade, I do feed my dogs premade commercial raw . ;In my experience, most raw brands are very forthcoming about their ingredients and sourcing.
However, there are a few who have proprietary recipes and aren’t willing to share information on where they source their ingredients. ;If you’re comfortable with a brand, then no worries. ;If you’re new to a brand, their;lack of transparency may raise red flags. ;Either way, it’s up to you to ask the questions before spending your hard earned dollar for food that’s your dog will eat.
So don’t be afraid to ask questions, because many raw brands are very responsive and want to educate their customers and potential customers. ;And if you’re having trouble getting an answer, remember that there is enough competition today that you’ll find a raw brand that meets your needs.

Who Owns Nature’s Variety
I learned that Nature’s Variety was sold this year. ;I think many dog lovers share the fear that when their favorite pet food brand is sold, the quality of the food is going to decline. ;I don’t know much about Agrolimen; I read that it’s a Spanish organization that is invested in food, pet food, and restaurants.
Natures Variety, makers of Instinct® Pet Food, today announced that Agrolimen has acquired the remaining interest in the company by purchasing shares held by L Catterton and other shareholders. L Catterton made its initial investment in Natures Variety in 2008 and Agrolimen entered into a joint venture with L Catterton and other Natures Variety shareholders in July 2014. Acquisition Of Sojos By Wellpet
In a letter that I read on TruthAboutPetFood.com, there arent any plans to make changes to Sojos:
There will be no changes to the day-to-day operations of either company. Both organizations have significant talent and expertise that will benefit WellPet and Sojos. Ward and Maggie Johnson will continue to help with the transition. Distributor and retail customers of Sojos will continue with business as usual with the Sojos team.
Im not a fan of WellPet, because of my experience with how local stores stored their treats that allowed bugs to grow within bulk bins. ;Although my issue is more with the store than the brand, I never bought the treats again.
If you’re concerned about Sojos changing their recipes or sourcing, stay in contact with the brand by following them on social media and subscribing to a customer newsletter. ;This will give you a better chance of learning of any changes to their food.
