As weve covered extensively, dogs are no strangers to dairy and were able to digest these biscuits well enough for owners to keep giving it to them. Over time, meat was introduced to these biscuits to add a variety of flavours on offer. Milk-bones would have not been given as a dogs main source of food but these would have been used alongside these meals to help with training and bonding.;

Raw Dog Food Recipe Proportions
- 80% meat with fat
- 5% vegetables/fruits
- 5% dairy/supplements
Using those simple proportions, you can pretty much make up your own recipe from whatever you have on hand or find on sale at the store or.
Meat with fat:;I will usually buy ground;meat of some sort for this just because its easier than breaking down other cuts. Beef, chicken, pork, bison, gamey meats, etc.
Organs:;The good news is organs are cheap. The bad news is organs are kind of gross. Nothing like some slimy chicken livers getting pulsed up in your food processor. Liver and kidneys are the two easiest to find in the grocery store.
Vegetables/fruits: Ginger happens to hate vegetables and fruit. Shes literally spit them out before or eaten around them if weve tried to feed her some in her bowl. So I choose sweet things here like apples and carrots and they get processed real fine so she cant tell. Avoid onions, grapes and raisins as they can cause kidney failure in dogs.
Dairy/supplements:;Whole eggs are a great source of calcium. Ill also use some plain yogurt to help bind the patties. Supplement wise, ground flaxseed meal, olive oil and fish oil are great additions too.

Almost as important as what dogs eat in the wild is what they dont eat.
For starters , they dont necessarily eat every day. Next Level Farming And An Abundance Of Starch
Looking at the same study by Erik Axelsson, Science Mag state that 7,000 years ago dogs started to eat so much wheat and millet that their bodies were forced to create more starch digesting genes to cope. This is clearly because the farming skill of dog owning humans reached such a level that there were an abundance of crops, more than enough to feed their dogs who at this stage probably needed to hunt less and less as they got so many calories from crops.
To put it into context, dogs have between 3 and 30 starch digesting genes whereas wolves only have two. Without these genes, modern day dogs would not be able to eat the mass produced kibble we feed them today. Its worth noting that humans also went through a similar change to get these new genes to adapt to their new diet.
Around this time, physiological changes would have also happened particularly in dogs teeth and jaws their teeth slowly became larger and more flat to be able to properly chew the food they were given rather than the razor sharp teeth of wolves which are designed to tear meat off the bone. However, human interference in terms of selective breeding will have been the biggest factor in the physical evolution of dogs.
Startlingly, we are still thousands of years away from canned wet food and crunchy kibble but its clear just how much influence humans have had on a dogs diet and in fact their entire evolution to the present day.
