How Bad Are They
As a general rule of thumb, owners should avoid dog food formulas with ingredients they wouldn’t consume themselves.
Who wants to eat dead, dying, or diseased meats? This particular ingredient is especially harmful to dogs because owners will never know the exact source.
High-quality formulas contain all-natural protein from healthy animals. However, 4-D meats are often full of chemicals, hormones, steroids, and much more.
Not only that but these;rejected and discarded meats;may harbor potentially deadly extras. For example, sick and dying animals can contain all kinds of diseases.
The same goes for roadkill that may harbor a slew of bacteria and parasites.
Even seemingly innocuous sources like;expired meat from a grocery store may be thrown into the formula without even being removed from the package. Because of the uncertainty with 4-D meats, dogs can be exposed to a lot of harm.
Steroids, insecticides, and growth hormones can affect the way they develop and grow while chemicals and parasites can lead to a variety of health issues like cancer.
Corn and grains;are bad for dogs because they aren’t built to consume these ingredients on a regular basis. Dogs are carnivores through and through. They don’t have the right teeth to grind up grains.
As a result, many dogs can develop digestion problems. The influx of GMOs, insecticides, and mold on corn and grain products can also lead to cancer and allergy issues.

Original Line Of Diamond Dog Food
The Diamond Pet Food Company is owned and produced by Schell & Kampeter, and comprises three product lines.
The original Diamond line of dog food lacks the desired nutritional content you should be looking for in your dogs food.
A review of several Diamond dog food products reveals the use of corn, soy and wheat ingredients.
Many of the meat-based ingredients come from unnamed sources like fish meal or meat by-products of questionable quality.
They dont use many artificial flavors and colors like other bad dog food brands on this list, so thats a plus.
Still, it would be good to avoid any brand that makes heavy use of wheat, soy and corn.
Compare Prices On Iams
The Iams brand of dog food includes seven different product lines so the price for their products varies quite a bit. Iams ProActive Health is the most affordable line of products with small 12.5 and 15-pound bags of dry food ranging from $15 to $30.
The Healthy Naturals line of products is a little more expensive with 23-pound bags ranging from $25 to $50. The most expensive line of products is the Iams Veterinary Formula line. For wet food, ;Iams offers 6-ounce cans, 14-ounce cans, and 8-ounce tubs, depending on the product line.
Iams Woof Delights 8-ounce tubs come in cases of 12 for $25 to $42 which averages out to $2.80 per tub. Company Reputation And Quality Control Issues
Iams was deeply involved in the 2007 pet food recalls and their company reputation took a big hit at that time. The situation was largely beyond their control, however. Manufacturers in China who provided corn gluten meal to pet food makers in the U.S. laced the product with something called melamine to make it seem to have more protein. Melamine is a plastic but it has protein qualities. When the corn gluten meal was shipped to the pet food makers in the U.S., they used it in pet food without having any idea that it had melamine in it. As a result, many cats and dogs died, especially pets who ate canned foods. Iams was one of the first companies affected. Iams, and many other pet food companies, now have testing procedures in place so they can tell if an ingredient has been tampered with before it is used to make pet food.
Since that time, Iams has a reasonably good record with regard to recalls. They have had several very small, isolated recalls that affected a few lots of their foods but nothing large-scale.

Twin Pet Dry Dog Food
Twin Pet dog food is a plant-based dry dog food utilizing a limited amount of unnamed and unidentified meat as its primary source of animal protein.
Twin Pet contains cheap ingredients of poor quality that do not provide the necessary nutrition to dogs.
Like the dog food brands we already discussed, the first ingredient is corn, so you already know how we feel about that.
The second ingredient is;wheat middlings, also known as wheat mill run. It is a cheap by-product that remains after cereal grain processing.
Unfortunately, the disparities in nutrient content in the wheat middlings can be a critical concern in determining their aptness for being used in any dog food or even livestock feeds.
In actuality, wheat middlings is just the milling dust as well as floor sweepings. It is an ingredient that is typically associated with low-quality pet foods.
The third ingredient is the meat and bone meal, a rendered product from the mammal tissues. It has lower digestibility in comparison with the other meat meals.
Other unhealthy, non-nutritional ingredients in this dog food include unspecified animal fat and salt. The quantity of salt is also unknown, making it difficult to determine the nutritional value of this ingredient.
Altogether this product is one of the worst dog food brands.
Why Choose This Brand
Pet owners who are looking for affordable but quality dog food that puts emphasis on the importance of nutrition that is tailored to the specific needs of their pets will find Iams to be a worthy choice. All of their recipes contain everything a dog needs to remain healthy and happy, including enough protein and fat, some fiber, plus all the micronutrients.
Folks who are wary about wheat and soy will also love the Iams brand as it doesnt contain these two ingredients. However, do take note that most of their formulas contain corn, mostly as ground whole corn. Nonetheless, based on the experiences of pet parents who seem to be very satisfied with this pet food one can say that the inclusion of corn in a nicely balanced recipe doesnt really matter that much.
Importantly, all Iams pet foods are carefully designed to adhere to the requirements set by the AAFCO. While the brand isnt the best when it comes to providing your dog with the highest possible amount of easily digestible protein, it doesnt contain very low amounts of protein either. As a matter of fact, there are quite a few pricier dog food brands with much lower protein content. Overall, Iams is a solid choice if youre on a budget as their formulas are well-balanced and easily digestible.

Why Are Vegetables A Good Thing For My Puppy
Contrary to very popular belief, our fluffy canine friends are actually omnivores, not carnivores! This means that, like us, and unlike their feline counterparts, puppies and dogs will get vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants from fruits as well as vegetables. Vegetables can be a fantastic source of Vitamin E, which is great for healthy, silky coats, and B vitamins for energy. Spinach, blueberries, and other superfoods which provide antioxidants help your puppy to fight cancer by combatting cell damage, too, while the natural fiber helps your puppy digest more easily. Thats why they form a healthy part of any good puppy food, like the ProActive kibble in our Hypoallergenic IAMS Dog Food Review.

What Type Of Grains
But it is certainly true that some grains are better for dogs than others. Just like for us humans, dogs should be eating unprocessed, whole grains and avoid processed grains, GMOs and grain by-products.
This is because, while whole grains contain a lot of fiber and healthy nutrients, a lot of this is lost when grains are processed.
This means that while whole grains give your dog nutrients that they need and leave them feeling full, processed grains are largely empty calories, and leave them feeling hungry and wanting to eat more than they need.
This can quickly lead to weight issues and related problems. The same is true for grain products.
So, you need to be feeding your dog the right kinds of grains, whole grains such as wheat, rice, pats, barley, brown rice, millet, quinoa, and oatmeal.
Unfortunately, some dog foods use processed grains or grain by-products as a cheaper alternative, and these should be avoided.
Be wary when you see ingredients such as corn cobs, peanut hulls, soybean hulls, rice hulls, oat hills, almond shells, cottonseed hulls, powdered cellulose, grain fragments, wheat middlings, wheat mill run, and soy mill run.

Are Mainstream Food Brands Any Good
The last time I was in with one of my dogs for a check-up, I had to ask about her food recommendation.
My vet said she understood my surprise, but that brands like Purina and IAMS have really improved the quality and varieties of foods they offer.
Over the last several years, they have been forced to change to keep up with the growing market.
She also pointed out that the boutique foods are under scrutiny by the FDA as to the long-term effects concerning dilated cardiomyopathy .
The concern with the boutique foods is that they believe the grain-free foods are the cause of the increase in cases of dogs suffering from DCM.
So, many veterinarians are falling back on more tried and true brands such as Purina and IAMS.
Then at the end of my visit, the vet suggested I try ALPO kibble for Daisy.
She laughed at the look on my face when she suggested it. But she stated that it is a balanced diet and a lot of seniors that are picky eaters, like Daisy, tend to like it.

What Food Is Good For My Cat Then
While Iams is not the worst cat food available on the market, it can be categorized as mid-grade, not the worst but a far cry from the best. There are many better foods with no meat by-products and no fillers.
More and more pet owners and nutritionists say proper foods are the key to a cat’s health and longevity. I would recommend all feline lovers do their homework when it comes to choosing a good diet for their cat. While the best cat foods may be costly, the truth is “you get what you pay for,” and owners investing in high-quality cat food will save money in the long run. Chances are that if cat owners do their math well, two plus two will make four, meaning that healthy diets will make healthy cats. Looking for the best food for your cat?
