Who Makes Kibbles And Bits Dog Food

Comparison To Other Leading Brands

Big Heart Pet Brands Kibbles N Bits Dog Food 1988 TV Commercial HD

Kibbles n Bits is an affordable dog food brand. However, it is important to note that cheaper dog foods generally are made up of worse ingredients. We recommend considering price, quality, and health benefits to your pup when choosing a dog food brand. A 17-pound bag of their dry dog mixes is priced at around $10. Larger sizes are also offered at better value, as well as small sizes if you want to try out a new flavor or formula. Their canned dog food is priced at around $16 for a case of 12 13.2-oz cans.

If youre not impressed by Kibbles n Bits ingredient lists and are willing to spend a bit more, Diamond and Blue Buffalo are good brands to look into. You can also check out our other recommendations for organic and grain free dog foods.

Kibbles N Bits Reviews

Quite frankly, Kibbles N Bits is as innutritious as the brand name suggests. Its basically, well, kibbles and bits. By that, we mean a whole lot of cheap filler, artificial flavoring, chemical preservatives, and by-products. Okay, they wont admit straight up that they put by-products into their dog food, but there are two gigantic red flags:

  • Meat and bone meal is in their ingredient list. If it were just pure meat, then it wouldve been listed as chicken meal. The word bone is worrisome. It suggests that this is a by-product meal, also known as the leftovers of an animal carcass dried and ground up.
  • They wont specify which kind of meat they put in their formulas. Organic meat? Factory farmed meat? Chicken? Beef? Turkey? Fish? They wont tell us anything. Just meat and bone meal. For all we know, it could be horse or rat by-product meal. The fact that Del Monte Foods is so secretive when it comes to this worries us a lot. We dont know about you, but were not comfortable feeding our dog mystery meat combined with a bunch of harmful and unhealthy ingredients.

Not only that, but Kibbles N Bits is also chock full of corn, soybean meal, and corn syrup, none of which are good for your dog at all.

    Kibbles N Bits Product Range

Kibbles N Bits has a relatively small product range that is evenly split between dry dog food and wet/canned dog food.

All of Kibbles N Bits recipes are grain-inclusive, and they do not produce any grain-free dog food.

Kibbles N Bits does produce some recipes for small breed dogs but does not produce any puppy food or large breed dog food.

Kibbles N Bits American Grill Burger Dinner

American Grill gives dogs that appealing taste and smell of barbecued food. The enticing aroma and flavor coupled with the gravy sauce is designed to attract picky eaters to wolf down their meal.

If the kibble version’s ingredients don’t appeal much to you, then the wet canned food might. The contents are infinitely better. Water starts off the recipe, but this is usually the case with most wet foods regardless of brands.

The second and third ingredients are pure meat. Chicken and beef. This is good because you are assured your dog is getting high-quality animal protein. Plus, your pooch is eating real meat and not fillers.

The fourth ingredient is a bit problematic, however. Its listed as meat by-products. Quality meat products should always be named. For example, if the meat comes from chicken then it should be chicken by-products. But to call it meat by-products can mean anything and can be coming from any kind of animal.

Aside from the mentioned meat products above, there is also bacon and steamed bone meal to up the meat and protein content. As for the guaranteed analysis, the crude protein is at 8%, fat at 3%, fiber at 1.5%, and moisture at 82%.

Overall, we find this Kibbles n Bits recipe satisfactory. Not exceptional in terms of quality, but much better than the dry dog food versions of the brand.

Has Kibbles N Bits Ever Been Recalled

Yes. In February 2018, The J.M. Smucker Company announced a recall of various flavors of Kibbles n Bits, Gravy Train, Ol Roy and Skippy canned dog foods. The companys move came on the heels of independent testing in February 2018 that had reportedly turned up traces of pentobarbital often used as a euthanasia drug in samples of Gravy Train. Pentobarbital can be deadly when consumed by dogs or cats. Full details of the 2018 recall appear below.

A Sneak Peek At The Winner: Purina Dog Chow

Purina Dog Chow shines in comparison to Kibbles n Bits with higher quality ingredients and a wide variety of recipes and flavors to choose from. Although Kibbles n Bits may be tastier, Purina Dog Chow is the healthier option. We recommend trying Purina Dog Chow Natural or Complete for tasty, affordable dog foods.

    The Winner of Our Comparison:

Ingredients To Avoid In Your Dry Dog Food

Many cheap dry foods contain cheap fillers as the main ingredients. These ingredients can lower the cost of your food, for sure, but it comes at a higher price elsewhere. Corn provides only empty calories, causing your dog to eat without gaining vital nutrients, and soy can cause food allergies.

A recent study also discovered a possible link between a food heavy in potatoes, legumes, and peas, and a condition known as canine dilated cardiomyopathy, or an enlarging of the heart. The link isnt yet understood, and we dont recommend throwing out your old food just yet. Until we know more about whats going on, we recommend that you avoid foods that list those ingredients in the first three places to be on the safe side.

If your dog has significant food allergies and chronic itchy skin or digestive issues, you may want to switch to a limited ingredient food. This type of food contains a single protein source and is usually grain and gluten-free. Fewer ingredients means your dog doesnt have to work as hard to digest the food and is less likely to experience inflammation as a result of consuming too many different ingredients.

Dry food companies that are frequent offenders for using cheap fillers and artificial ingredients are some well-known names in big box stores. Ol Roy and Kibbles n Bits arent known for using quality ingredients from single protein sources, for example. You may save some money in the short term but could end up spending that money on extra vet visits.

Our Kibbles N Bits American Grill Grilled Usa Beef Steak Flavor Review:

Del Monte Foods has a knack of making Kibbles N Bits dog food look appetizing. For example, the Kibbles N Bits American Grill Grilled USA Beef Steak Flavor dog food formula sounds delicious, doesnt it? Theres even a big slab of juicy steak featured on the bag. If you read our review of the brand, youve probably figured by now that this dog food formula does not contain as much steak as it does cheap filler, artificial flavoring, and preservatives.

Ground yellow corn, soybean meal, beef & bone meal, ground whole wheat, and animal fat are the first five ingredients in this formula. You dont even want to know what the sixth ingredient is. Okay, well tell you: corn syrup. Farther down the list, youll see a whole slew of artificial colors .

Even though this is a steak formula, the only source of steak is beef & bone meal . It implies that its a by-product rather than real beef. If you ask us, the only redeeming quality of this formula is that it contains potatoes and cheddar cheese, but those ingredients are smack dab in the middle of the ingredient list.

If you want to give your dog a nice steak dinner, give him real steak. This Kibbles N Bits dog food formula does not resemble steak, let alone nutritious dog food, whatsoever.

    Legal Issues And Controversy

    Kibbles and bits.

Purina was sued in 2015 after a consumers dog had gotten sick from their food. This was due to the additive propylene glycol, which has little to no information on its impact on canine health. After a second lawsuit in 2017 for false advertising, the company has not had any lawsuits since.

    • Has been sued by consumers
    • Used questionable ingredients in the past

    Kibbles N Bits Animal Testing

We have limited information on what kind of testing Kibbles N Bits participates in, and based on this, we can not rule out that they do not participate in invasive or laboratory testing of animals.

Many dog food brands give very limited information on their testing and trial regimes as they fear backlash from their customer base.

We strongly believe that invasive or laboratory testing of animals in the pet food industry is a cruel and outdated practice and one which should see a significant decline.

Kibbles N Bits Homestyle Grilled Beef & Vegetable Flavors

Homestyle captures the taste of simple, home-cooking thats a favorite of many. It packs the meaty rich taste of beef with the fresh flavor of vegetables for a culinary-inspired formula.

First, lets discuss the good parts of this recipe. Made for adult canines, it blends two textures into one that of a crunchy outer layer and a soft inside made up of meaty bits. Dogs like variety in the texture of their food, so this is a plus. This might also help entice picky eaters into trying out new food.

Theres a good amount of supplementary vitamins here, such as zinc, copper, vitamin D3, vitamin B12, and more. The guaranteed analysis looks good too, if a bit average. The crude protein content is at 19%, crude fat is 8%, crude fat is 12%, and fiber is 4%.

Adult dogs will get enough nutrition here to meet their daily needs. And if your pet is the type who doesnt drink often, the moisture content of 18% will help keep him more hydrated. Most kibbles only contain a moisture level of 10%, so this is way above that.

Now on to the bad parts. Again this recipe, like the other formulations in Eagle Packs dry food range, does not start with animal protein. Instead, it takes most of the protein from plant sources like corn and soybean meal.

There are also quite a lot of unnecessary food colorings that do not really do anything for dogs. Colors are meant to appeal to pet owners, but dogs care more for taste and smell when it comes to their food.

What Customers Like And Dislike About Kibbles N Bits

Customers like that their dogs will eat the food without much protest. It does seem to have a pleasant flavor for most dogs, and most customers reported that their dogs ate without complaining. Also, the budget for the food was highly suitable for a wide variety of budgets and customers appreciated that they could always find the food wherever they were.

Quite a few customers complained that the food caused itchiness in their dogs and some digestive issues. Dogs can be sensitive to things like corn or soy in their diets, and artificial flavors can also trigger inflammation that causes itchy skin.

Really, customers were somewhat divided on whether the food was worth it for the budget or terrible. Most reviews trended at the extreme in either direction.

Meaty Middles Prime Rib Flavor Review

Almost all of Kibbles N Bits recipes offer extremely similar nutrition and ingredients which makes it difficult to choose between them.

Therefore weve chosen to highlight a unique recipe which is known as Meaty Middles. This recipe has a crunchy outer shell and a chewy inside which some dogs may find appealing.

The recipes primary meat ingredient is Beef & Bone Meal which we discussed earlier. This ingredient provides some animal-based protein and fat.

The bulk of the recipe is made up of Corn, Soybean, and Wheat. These grain ingredients provide a large portion of carbohydrates, fiber, and some plant-based protein.

Fda Warns Of Lethal Drug In Dog Food: Gravy Train Kibbles N Bits Skippy Ol Roy Named

The FDA issued an alert Friday warning consumers to avoid feeding four brands of dog food contaminated with pentobarbital a drug typically used to euthanize pets manufactured by the J.M. Smucker company. The alert came hours after Smuckers press release that four popular brands of dog food Gravy Train, Kibbles N Bits, Skippy, and Ol Roy were being withdrawn from stores nationwide for contamination with sodium pentobarbital.

The FDA said they are issuing this notice in order to make pet owners aware of the firms action. The alert is reassuring, particularly as Smuckers has been covertly withdrawing the affected product from stores in the last week after the catastrophic discovery without informing consumers.

    ILLEGAL + ADULTERATED DOG FOOD

Fridays alert says the FDAs evaluation of the testing of the dog food does indicate that pentobarbital was in indeed in the products and that the drug should never be present in pet food in any amount and as such the product is adulterated. To put a finer point on it, the detection of any amount of pentobarbital in pet food is a violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Actsimply put, pentobarbital should not be in pet food.

    SYMPTOMS OF PENTOBARITAL POISONING

Meanwhile, the FDA is keeping track of reports of any pet illnesses connected with the drug contamination in these products and are carefully monitoring the situation as it unfolds. And consumers are encouraged to report any problems to the FDA immediately.

Kibbles N Bits Recall History List:

In 2018, the brand came under fire for reports of low levels of a chemical often used to euthanize dogs found present in quite a few of the brands lines. Pentobarbital was detected in small doses, prompting J.M. Smucker to issue a wide recall of six different wet food brands in the name of safety. Overall, the company has a mostly clean record, but that recall was particularly harrowing.

Here Are Some General Recommendations For Feeding Kibble:

    Amazon.com : Kibbles
    • Puppies: Your puppy will change a lot over a short time, so the way you feed it will also change. Your veterinarian can give you a clear path for feeding your puppy properly so that it receives all the proper building blocks for lifelong health.
    • Adults: Feeding kibble depends on your dogs ideal weight. Smaller dogs may receive only a 1/4 cup portion twice a day while the largest breeds may receive anywhere from four to six cups per day. Your veterinarian can give you advice on maintaining your dogs target weight and how to assess if your dog is carrying more pounds than necessary.
    • Seniors: Senior dogs will receive much the same nutrition as they did when they were younger adults, but if your senior dog struggles with weight, this could be a time to cut back feeding and treats at the direction of your veterinarian. It could also be time to switch to a smaller kibble size if necessary for mouth comfort.
