Is It Okay To Feed My Pet Table Scraps Or People Food

We agree with veterinarians who strongly believe that feeding pets table scraps or “people” food can lead to excesses or deficiencies of nutrients in your pet’s diet which over time may result in health problems. Therefore, we do not recommend feeding any food other than Science Diet® or Prescription Diet® food, unless your veterinarian recommends otherwise. If you are interested in treating your pet, try feeding a few kibbles, a small spoon of canned food or use your pet’s food to make a homemade treat.

Here are some approved, low-calorie treats for healthy pets or pets that are on a weight-loss formula:

Pets fed Science Diet® foods:

Is Prescription Dog Food Better

There is a lot of debate on whether or not prescription dog food is actually better for your dog. Some people swear by it and say that it has made a world of difference in their dogs health, while others say that it is no better than regular dog food and is just a waste of money. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide what is best for your dog and what you are comfortable spending your money on. If you are concerned about your dogs health and feel that prescription dog food may be the best option, speak to your veterinarian and see if they have any recommendations.

There is no guarantee that prescription diets are superior to regular diets. Pet food does not provide a healthy diet for our pets. Dont put your pet at risk by allowing the vet to do his or her job. A prescription diet may not be the best option for your dog if you cannot afford it or dislike its ingredients. There are alternative options that have proven to be effective and safe for dogs as well. The majority of unhealthy pets can be better off eating high-quality foods like Hills Science Diet. Dasuquin is a dog chew treat that relieves joint pains while also maintaining bone health.

What Our Vets Say About Prescription Diet Dog Food

I spoke about prescription diets with pet food guru Marion Smart PhD recently and she said something that I thought would be fun to follow through with.

Dr Smart said, How do you think vets would evaluate prescription diets if we just showed them the ingredients? Would they be able to tell if they were prescription diets?

So I called up some of our veterinary friends and gave them four pet food ingredient labels, one of which was a veterinary diet. They were only shown the ingredients and did not know what brand or manufacturer made the food.

I then asked the vets to list which food or foods they thought was a grocery store food and which food or foods they thought was a premium food.

Here are the four ingredient labels I asked the vets to rank. Can you guess which one is the prescription diet?

How To Calculate The Carbohydrate Percentage Of Your Dogs Food

Much to the frustration of any owner with a diabetic dog, the carbohydrate percentage is not often displayed on dog food packaging.

Luckily, there is a way you can calculate the amount of carbohydrates in your dogs food using the provided information in the Guaranteed Analysis section.

  • Add up the percentages of protein, fat, moisture, and ash recorded in the GA.
  • Subtract that amount from 100.
  • That is the percentage of carbohydrates present in the dog food.
  • One small issue though: the amount of ash isnt usually listed in the Guaranteed Analysis. However, this amount usually ranges from 5% to 8%.

Since we could not get the definitive carb count for some recipes using the GA, the carbohydrate percentage may actually be lower than what weve recorded .

In some cases, other sources have provided the carbohydrate percentage when such data was available, weve used it.
