Dogs Need Healthy Carbs

Betsy’s food was not low-carb because I used butternut squash or sweet potatoes or pumpkin. I also added in frozen blueberries for the antioxidants, vitamins, and extra boost of low-glycemic carbs.

Now that we have 2 dogs and Betsy lost the weight, it’s much more economical to use soaked rice, but I still mix it up with the sweet potatoes now and then.

If your dog needs to be on a grain-free diet because of weight or food allergies, diced sweet potato/butternut squash/pumpkin are much-loved by our furry friends!

How To Adapt For Instant Pot Cooking

Once youve found a few recipes to try, youll need to adapt them to cooking in your Instant Pot. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Use less liquid. You need at least 1 cup of broth or water to create the steam necessary to cook the food, but not much more. You can always add more after cooking if the meal is too dry.
  • Dont fill the Instant Pot more than two-thirds full. Unlike a slow cooker, the Instant Pot needs room to create pressure to cook.
  • Adjust the cooking time. Cooking meat takes only two-thirds the time in an Instant Pot that it does in an oven vegetables and pasta, like rice, take only about 5 minutes.
  • Look for recipes with ground beef or turkey. That way, you can use the saute mode to cook the meat before adding pasta and/or vegetables.
  • Set the pot to pressure cook and cook for between 5 and 7 minutes.
  • Add any nutritional supplements or dietary aids after the food has finished cooking.

Note: Youll probably have to play around to find the right mix of ingredients and cooking time for each recipe. To make sure youre not overfeeding your pup, know the calorie count for the entire dish so you can control portion size appropriately.

Dogs Need Healthy Fat & Fat

The veggies and fruit you add to your homemade dog food recipe provide fat-soluble vitamins. However, those vitamins require fat in order to be absorbed.

Per my vet’s recommendation , I add coconut oil to our homemade dog food.

Coconut oil is one of those foods that is just as beneficial for dogs as it is for humans! The saturated fat in coconut oil is awesome for your dog’s energy levels. In older dogs, this is a plus because coconut oil helps keep their metabolism going strong.

Coconut oil also gives dogs a shiny, healthy coat! We noticed that Betsy’s black coat was shinier than ever after she’d been eating her homemade food for about a month!

And I truly believe that the same anti-fungal/antibacterial qualities that coconut oil provides for humans are provided for dogs as well. Since transitioning to a homemade diet, our dogs have not needed to be wormed and have not gotten sick at all!

To provide our dogs with more fat-soluble vitamins, iron, and B vitamins, I add beef or chicken liver when I can. Dogs love their organ meats too so if you find yourself with some extra heart or tongue or liver that you don’t want to eat, don’t throw it out! Just add it to your homemade dog food!

I also add a few tablespoons of ground flax seed to our recipe for extra Omega 3s.

Most pet owners know that some foods should never be fed to dogs, but just in case

IMPORTANT!: I am NOT a veterinarian or canine nutritionist. That said, while you can alter the veggies added , here are some things you should NEVER feed dogs: onions, garlic, mushrooms, raisins, grapes and chocolate. This recipe is also meant as a supplement to kibble or as a snack/treat. Also, every dog reacts to food differently due to various reasons. If your dogs poop color changes after feeding, it may be because of the dietary change and the colors in the food such as carrots. In general, it is usually suggested to slowly incorporate new foods with current foods for a smoother transition. You know your dog best, so as with any dietary change, be sure to monitor their behavior. Feed them at your own discretion with common sense employed and always take them to a licensed veterinarian should there be a shift in behavior in terms of what they eat.

How Much And When Should You Feed Your Dog

This will vary from dog to dog, but a general rule of thumb is for every 10 lbs your dog weighs they should be fed roughly 1 cup of prepared food.

For our 80 lb Hooch, that means 2 meals a day each containing 4 cups of food. It is important to note that, dogs with kidney problems often feel better when fed several small meals throughout the dayrather than just one or two large meals, so you may find that you need to adjust your feeding schedule as time goes on accordingly to keep your pup comfy!

How To Make It

To make homemade dog food, I use my Instant Pot, but you can use any pressure cooker. To make homemade dog food on the stove, you can check out my recipe for homemade dog food on the stove.

First, set your Instant Pot to “Saute” and cook your ground meat. Pour off any fat and once cooled, discard it.

Add your drained meat back to your Instant Pot. Dump in your leftover rice and mix well. If you are using oats instead of rice, skip to the next step.

Next, add your bone broth and coconut oil. Stir to combine and let the coconut oil melt.

Then, add a bag or two of frozen vegetables. If using a 12-ounce bag, use two. If using a 16-ounce bag, use one and a half. Mix well.

If using oats instead of rice, add them now.

Finally, put your lid on and close the vent. Set your Instant Pot to “Pressure Cook” or “Manual” mode at high pressure for 7 minutes.

Allow the pressure to release naturally, which should take about 5 minutes, and open your Instant Pot. Let your dog food cool before serving or storing. You can divide the food into portions depending on your needs – I usually split it in half and freeze one batch. I use a measuring cup when I serve the food, so I don’t take the time to split it into individual portions.

Homemade Beef Instant Pot Dog Food

This beef-based dog food is filled with great ingredients. Not only does it provide high levels of protein, but your dog can also take advantage of the nutrient-rich beef livers.

This recipe is designed to work with whatever natural food waste you have on hand, so feel free to make adjustments based on what’s available.

  • 3 cups of white basmati rice
  • 3 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar
  • 3 pounds of ground beef
  • 1 pound of beef livers
  • About 36 ounces of available vegetables
  • 2 and a half cups of banana
  • 6 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 6 tablespoons of ground flaxseed

Before you cook, combine the water and vinegar. Let the rice soak in this mixture for a few hours. Then, strain the rice out and set the water aside while you start cooking the meat. You can cook the ground beef and livers with the “Saute” function of the Instant Pot.

You should cook the proteins until they are about halfway finished. Once they reach that sweet spot, add the soaked rice and the remaining water from earlier.

Stir what you currently have in the Instant Pot together before you add the vegetables on top. Don’t mix the vegetables in. Instead, close the pot, seal the vent, and let it cook in the “Manual” mode for about 12 minutes.

Once the timer is up, release the vent. At this point, you can add bananas and coconut oil. The recipe is pretty much done! Just mix everything together until you have a nice fluffy mixture.
