Kal Kan Complete Adult
This dog food makes the list because of questionable ingredient quality that is not nutritional and is somewhat harmful to dogs.
The primary ingredient is corn, which we just mentioned does not provide the proper nutrition your dog needs.
The second ingredient is meat and bone meal which is a dry product from the mammal tissues, including bones, exclusive of any added hair, blood, hoof, hide trimmings, horn, manure, rumen contents, and stomach.
Meat and bone meal may have a lower digestibility than most of the other meat meals.
Scientists believe that this decreased absorption may be because of the lower essential amino acid and higher ash content in the ingredient.
The meat itself can come from any mixture of cattle, pigs, goats or sheep, making classifying impossible for particular food allergens.
Although meat and bone meals are still considered meat concentrates rich in protein, a generic ingredient like this cannot be considered a quality item.
Kal Kans third ingredient is a soybean meal which a by-product or leftover of soybean oil production more often found in farm animal feed.
Although soybean meal comprises about 48% of protein, this ingredient would be estimated to have a lower biological value than meat.
Inexpensive plant-based ingredients like this can boost the total protein, an element that must be considered while judging the actual meat content of this dog food.
I think you get the point that these types of ingredients are not ideal for your furry friend.
Ol Roy Skin And Coat Dog Foodthe Bottom Line
Judging by its ingredients alone, Ol Roy Skin and Coat Dog Food looks like a below-average kibble.
But ingredient quality by itself cannot tell the whole story. We still need to estimate the products meat content before determining a final rating.
And a fat-to-protein ratio of about 52%.
Below-average protein. Below-average fat. And above-average carbs when compared to a typical dry food.
When you consider the protein-boosting effects of the soybean meal, corn germ and corn gluten meals, this looks like the profile of a kibble containing only a modest amount of meat.
Ol Roy Skin and Coat Formula Dog Food is a plant-based kibble using a modest amount of lamb meal as its main source of animal protein, thus earning the brand 1.5 stars.
Please note certain recipes within the same product line may have been given higher or lower ratings based upon our estimate of their total meat content.
Is Purina Bad For Dogs
Beneful dry dog food produced by Nestle Purina PetCare has resulted in serious illness and death of thousands of dogs, a lawsuit says. The eight kinds of Beneful dog food have caused internal bleeding, liver failure, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, seizures, bloat and kidney failure, the suit said.

Our Ol Roy Kibbles Chunks N Chews Review:
Ol Roy Kibbles, Chunks n Chews is formulated for dogs of all life stages. It has AAFCO approval based on nutrient profiles. By dry matter basis the food has 25.6 percent protein , 9.8 percent fat , 4.9 percent fiber , and a whopping 50 percent carbohydrates. Our guess is that most of the carbs come from the ground yellow corn in the food which is the first ingredient.
Still, the first ingredient in this food is ground yellow corn and it contains corn gluten meal later, which would indicate that this is a major source of protein and carbs in the food. Thats not what most owners want to see in a good dog food. Ideally we like to see a meat protein as the first ingredient.
Soybean meal is the second ingredient. Although soybeans are legumes and they provide a lot of protein, they are still a plant source of protein and we consider them to be less desirable than meat protein. Dog food manufacturers like them because its cheaper to use plant protein than meat protein. There are also some drawbacks to soybeans in dog food. Soybeans can contain phytoestrogens which interfere with a dogs hormones, especially female dogs. They also have phytates which can prevent the proper absorption of various minerals and nutrients in the food. Again, you find all kinds of soybean ingredients in lots of dog foods.

Ol Roy Dog Food Review
Ol Roy Dog Food is a low budget dog food that comes under the Walmart banner. The dog food uses cornmeal as its major ingredient, supplemented with meat and bone meal and chicken byproduct as animal protein sources. Despite its less than impressive list of ingredients, Ol Roy Dog Food is one of the best-selling dog food brands in the country.
The big selling point for Ol Roy Dog Food is its low cost. Compared to premium dog foods, Ol Roy is extremely reasonable. However, a closer look at the ingredients is warranted if you do choose to feed your pet Ol Roy Dog Food.

Complaints About Ol Roy Dog Food
There have been complaints about Ol Roy but its hard to judge how valid they are. Some people disapprove of the food because it costs less and comes from Walmart just as some people disapprove of Walmart in general. Other pet owners may have valid complaints specifically about the food itself. You can find quite a few sites online where people report problems with the food including this one.

At this time, there have been no recalls made on these brands products since the FDAs findings are still inconclusive.

Bravo Packing Performance Dog
We normally like raw pet food because most of these are free from fillers and the meat included are in their purest forms, free from processing of any kind. However, in the case of Bravo Packings raw diet, wed have to rethink this.
Bravo Packings Performance Dog and all of Bravo Packings other raw diets have undergone a recall this year.
Although no deaths or illnesses have been associated with the food, it is troubling that the brand has once again been involved with a recall.
From 2011 to 2015, Bravo had 7 recalls, which included expanded recalls.
There was another in 2018 and another in 2019 before the one for 2021. All of the past recalls were due to the possible presence of Salmonella or Listeria.
Recall Info: On March 3, 2021, Bravo Packing, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of two of their raw pet food products for possible cross contamination after samples collected during a US Food and Drug Administration inspection tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.
The brand expanded the recall on March 16 to include ALL of its pet food and bone products of all sizes. No lot code or date code has been provided for the recent recall so assume, for the safety of your pets, that all are possibly contaminated.
Quick Answer: Is Ol Roy Dog Food Made In The Usa
Walmart has never had its own manufacturing plant for Ol Roy Dog Food. The Mars pet food division headquarters is in Brentwood, Tennessee. Ol Roy is the best-selling dog food in the United States according to some stats, but still only receives a one-star rating.

Sportmix Premium High Energy 26/18
This makes the top of our worst dog foods list because of the sheer number of dogs that were affected by the aflatoxin levels found in several Sportsmix products, including this one.
Many pets have died and many more were left ill.
But even without the aflatoxin situation, this recipe was not a particularly good one to begin with. We normally like dog foods that start with a meat ingredient because that shows that meat makes up the most volume in the recipe. However, we arent sold on byproducts, and this recipe starts with one.
When byproducts are mentioned, it means this is what is leftover after the meat is removed. So a chicken byproduct meal is essentially dried out chicken leftovers that may include organs but also other stuff like hide, hair, or intestinal contents .
Are these harmful to your dogs? No. Are these nutritious? They can be. But are these high-quality ingredients? Definitely not.
Aside from the byproduct meal ingredient, this recipe also contains meat meal. But that ingredient is ambiguous. What animal was used? Which part/s?
The thing about unnamed ingredients is that it could mean anything. The meat could be sourced from one animal or it could be sourced from several. Its not a quality ingredient, thats for sure.
The recall involved 50- and 44-pound bags of Premium High Energy with an expiration of either March 2 or 3, 2022. The recall was later expanded to include more recipes and the updated toll numbered over 70 dogs dead and at least 80 more ill.

Ol Roy Company Overview
Ol Roy Dog Food was named after Sam Waltons dog Ol Roy. The brand was first launched in 1983. As a brand, Ol Roy Dog Food does not even have its own website. The pet food is owned by Walmart and made by Doane Pet Food, which, in turn, is owned by the Mars pet food division.
Ol Roy is the best-selling dog food in the United States according to some stats, but still only receives a one-star rating. The dog food brand has also been plagued with a number of recalls in the last thirty-five years. In 1999, several brands of pet food including Ol Roy Dog Food made by Doane Pet Food were recalled due to contamination by a fungal toxin. In March 2007, hundreds of Ol Roy products were recalled as part of the melamine crisis. Again, in June 2007, Ol Roy Dog Food was recalled because of possible salmonella contamination.
Ol Roy Dog Foods troubles continued with yet another recall in 2008 due to possible salmonella contamination. Early in 2018, Ol Roy Strips Turkey Bacon was recalled due to possible low levels of pentobarbital. Pentobarbital is used as a euthanizing agent and potentially fatal at higher levels.
Whats Wrong With Ol Roy Dog Food
Ol Roy was also found to contain the lethal drug pentobarbital which is used to euthanize cats and dogs. BHA is a carcinogen and according to the FDA, meat and bone meal and animal fat have a high probability to contain the lethal euthanasia drug pentobarbital and may contain the dead cats and dogs that come with it.

What Brand Of Dog Food Is Killing Dogs
A pet food recall is widening after the Food and Drug Administration announced that more than two dozen dogs died after eating Sportmix brand dry kibble. The statement issued on Monday said that the suspect is aflatoxin, a byproduct of a corn mold Aspergillus flavus, which at high levels can kill pets.
Merrick Real Texas Beef & Sweet Potato Recipe
If you are specifically looking for grain-free canine formula, then you can’t go wrong with this Merrick recipe.
It’s perfect for all breeds, ages, and sizes and is available in a variety of different flavors. We recommend the beef and sweet potato recipe as it is poultry-free .
Containing a whopping 38% protein and 15% fat, Merrick’s philosophy is that these two properties in combination with a host of vitamins and minerals will do wonders for promoting the overall dog’s health.
They are extremely transparent with regards to the ingredient composition, choosing only the best available products and containing no corn, wheat, soy or gluten ingredients.
This helps give us tremendous confidence in recommending the brand. At $60 for a 25-lb bag, this does fall into the premium category.
Whether the exceptional nutritional content is worth the increased price is up to you.

Alpo Come & Get It Cookout Classics
ALPO is a known dog food brand that may look to many as a quality pet food. But as turns out, its not. Or at least, this particular recipe isnt.
This formulation does not start with meat. In fact, the first meat ingredient wont be found until the 3rd slot in the list. And the only other meat is in 6th place.
What starts off this food is ground yellow corn, meaning that corn has the most significant volume in the diet. Not only that, there are two more corn ingredients in the recipe and one legume.
Its a formulation that focuses more on carbohydrates rather than protein. It meets the AAFCO standard, yes, but does not really go much above it.
The second thing we dont like is the inclusion of artificial food coloring. Color is not a requirement in dog food, and dogs will be better off without it. The less artificial ingredients in dog food, the better.
The Come & Get It! Cookout Classics is the least of the worst dog foods in our list because it contains real and named meat ingredients.
Recall Info: None for this recipe, and the only recall for the ALPO brand happened way back in 2007 for possible melamine contamination.
Problem Ingredients: Ground yellow corn, corn germ meal, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Yellow 6
