Nestle Purina Bought Merrick: Why You Should Care
; In July 2015, Merrick Pet Care sold to Nestle Purina.; Up until this point, Merrick had been privately owned and operated since its inception in 1988, when Garth Merrick created the company with just a small line of dog treats. The treats caught on, and in 92 the company branched into dry kibble and then opened a cannery in 95.; With the introduction of each new line of products, Merrick promised an unwavering dedication to quality. They assured customers they would never use any ingredients from China. They pledged to produce their products under the strictest regulations, and they worked closely with the USDA National Organic Program to become the only Organic certified manufacturer of both wet and dry dog food in the world. The popularity of their products increased and they solidified a diehard group of followers.
Like most worldwide conglomerations, Nestle Purina hasnt built the best name for itself in the pet care world. Its most prominent brands include Alpo, Beneful, Mighty Dog, and the Purina products . ;Averaged together these brands scrape by with a two-star rating on dogfoodadvisor.com. What makes them rank so poorly? Poor ingredients, lax production protocol, and multiple recalls certainly dont help. Each one of those brands has experienced recalls, mostly due to the presence of salmonella and melamine in the foods.

A Year On Just Right By Purina
This post was sponsored by Just Right by Purina. All opinions are my own. Thanks for supporting the brands that support Hey There, Chelsie.
One year ago, I announced my partnership with Just Right by Purina and made the switch to put both of my sweet doggos on their personalized dog food. Today, Im so honored and excited to say that were continuing on with our partnership and both Teddy & Rosie will continue to eat their personalized kibble from Just Right by Purina that they are madly obsessed with and both love.
If you are new around here, you might not know that we are THOSE dog people. We refer to Rosie and Teddy as our babies, refer to each other as their mommy and daddy, and spoil them rotten. Rosie has about three dog beds across the house and Teddy gets to sleep in the bed with us every night. They absolutely light up our lives and make our worlds go round. So, naturally, we truly care about the kind of kibble they eat on a daily basis and are very, very picky about their food.
So, whats the deal with Just Right by Purina? What makes them different?
First of all, Just Right by Purina;believes in 100% natural ingredients with vitamins and minerals and NO BY-PRODUCTS Just real, simple ingredients with lamb, chicken, or beef being the FIRST ingredient in every kibble. Real ingredients for real dogs. In my humble opinion, thats the only kind of kibble to feed them!
Go to Just Right by Purinas website;and right in your dogs name and click lets get started.
Alpo Prime Cuts Savory Beef Flavor Dry Dog Food
- The first 5 ingredients are Ground Yellow Corn, Meat And Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Beef Fat, Corn Gluten Meal
- Contains 23 essential vitamins and minerals
- Features Calcium for bone health
- Formulated for adult dogs
- Made in the USA
Well, if youre looking for premium dog food with high-quality ingredients, you wont like Purina ALPO Prime Cuts. The first ingredient is not real meat, but Yellow Corn.
Moreover, there is virtually no real meat in this recipe. The main protein sources are Meat And Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, and Corn Gluten Meal.
I hope I dont have to say how unhealthy this is for dogs. Animal sources are not named, so their quality is uncontrollable. And plant protein sources are biologically low in value for dogs.
The protein content of the product is 18%, which meets the requirements of AAFCO; however, I do not really recommend this product due to the quality of the proteins.
In addition, artificial colors can be found among the ingredients. Although these are allowed, I still believe that these compounds are disadvantageous in the diet of dogs.
The overall picture is somewhat improved by the fact that the recipe contains added vitamins and minerals. This balances the nutrients somewhat.

Purina Might Buy Champion Pet Foods
I wonder if champion pet foods wants to sell to get out because of the FDA warning? Because I heard their brand is one of the ones on the list for suspicion with DCM. But anyhow it is a crying shame how these big companies take over and not to mention that all the money they have, they could certainly afford the best quality. However, they wont buy the best. Furthermore, these poor small companies give the best quality and they dont even have a small portion of money that these big ones have. What a SHAME! Seems like the more money they have the cheaper they get and the ones with the least try to get the best. Unbelievable. The only thing I can say is greed.

Purina deserves Champion. The class action lawsuit against Champion Pet Food has been amended in a concerning way. The lawsuit now includes risk of inclusion in their pet food of pentobarbital
The clue to this concerning change in the Champion Pet Food lawsuit was this statement:
It was recently revealed on information and belief that Defendants were knowingly, recklessly and/or negligently selling certain of the Contaminated Dog Foods from the DogStar Kitchens containing pentobarbital, a substance largely used to euthanize animals.

Adult Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon & Rice Formula Review
The above Purina Pro Plan recipe for dogs with sensitive skin and stomachs is the most popular recipe sold on Chewy by a considerable margin.
The recipes primary ingredient is Salmon which is an excellent addition to any dog food recipe. Salmon can act as a high-quality source of fish-based protein and fat.
Also, Salmon is one of the best sources of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids. These fatty acids can provide several health benefits to dogs, including an improvement in the condition of skin and coats, which are often affected by allergies.
Outside of this Salmon content, this recipe from Purina Pro Plan utilizes a mix of Barley, Rice, and Oat Meal as its plant-based content.
These grain ingredients act as dense sources of nutrition and can provide a mix of carbohydrates, plant-based protein, fiber, and more.
It is also worth noting that these grain ingredients are preferred by many to lower-cost grains like Corn and Wheat. Fewer dogs have a negative reaction to these grains, which is a critical trait for a recipe for dogs with sensitive skin to stomachs.
While many would expect specialized recipes like the above to come in at a high price point, they are surprisingly affordable in comparison to similar brands, with a 30-pound bag usually costing around $50.
Nestl Purina Petcare Making A Difference
Just as the former Ralston Purina pioneered pet nutrition and care at its St. Louis headquarters, Nestlé Purina continues that tradition today. A passionate leader that promotes animal welfare and the positive bond between people and pets, Purina is a catalyst in bringing together resources and organizations that make a difference.
As the organizer of the St. Louis Petlover Coalition, Purina envisioned a collaborative effort in which animal welfare organizations work together to save more animals. That vision is shaping programs that will help to increase pet adoptions, funding for spays and neuters, adoptions of senior pets, pet education, and community outreach.
St. Louisans are accustomed to Purina leading the way in pet care and nutrition education. Though Purina was founded in 1894 as a manufacturer of animal feeds, it was the production of nutritious dog foods for sporting and working farm dogs, added in 1926, that would prevail.
The same year Purina began making dog food, the company bought a 330-acre farm at Gray Summit, Mo., one hour from downtown St. Louis, to conduct feeding studies. Purina Farms became a showcase in which feeders and dealers would travel on special trains from St. Louis to tour the farm, enjoy a family style chicken dinner and vaudeville show performed by amateur actors from the General Office downtown.
