Can You Give Your Dog Eggs

How It’s Made Dog and Cat Food

You can give your dog eggs. They are great for your dog and contain a great deal of protein which is healthy for your dog. However, the manner at which it is presented is important. You should avoid serving raw eggs to your dog. Especially dogs with sensitive stomachs can have issues with processing this meal. Also, do not include the shell in the meal. The shell has an enormous amount of calcium that your dog may not be able to deal with.

Luxury Products For Dogs Expand The Market

Attitudes towards domesticated dogs shifted and they became viewed as an investment. This meant owners wanted to do everything they could to keep their dogs healthy. This is where marketing messages around dog food started to come in.

As research into canine nutrition improved, so did the quality and diversity of products available. In the 1960s the first commercially available food specifically made for puppies became available.

It was not however until the mid-1980s when the U.S. National Academy of Sciences National Research Council published nutritional requirements for dogs and cats. These requirements were updated in 2006.

The national research council was not the only organization that was paying attention to what and how dogs ate. In 1909, the Association of Feed Control Officials, AAFCO was founded but it was not until 1917 that they began including language around pet food in model bills. AAFCO guidelines are still used today to help pet food manufacturers create complete and balanced diets for all life stages.

It is also important to understand that the US Food and Drug Administation is the governing body over pet food. They are the ones who regulate the ingredients that can be used and ensure that the food sold as pet food is safe. If your dog is ever sickened by pet food due to false claims or contamination the FDA is who you would report these issues to.

Dog Food Companies Compete For Market Share

As health and wellness trends related to human nutrition continued to evolve, so did trends in dog food. In the last 15 -20 years there have been a much larger number of pet foods and brands on the market. These available diets include grain-free, limited ingredients, and boutique brands.

The marketing messages that come with these foods are designed to draw in pet owners. Pictures of wholesome ingredients and promises of high-quality proteins are shown on boxes, bags, and in advertising. This isn’t always the case and some of these foods are made with ingredients that aren’t the best for our pups.

This misleading marketing is part of the reason that we started Ollie. We wanted to create fresh and delicious food made with high-quality ingredients.

What Did Dogs Eat Before Dog Food Was Invented

Improperly overloaded with carbohydrates. Several factors contributed to the early diets of dogs, but carbohydrates were at the heart of all of them. Some people believed, in the Victorian era, that the killing and disposal of domesticated and undesirable dogs would lead to their return to predatory practices. While plenty of societies fed surplus puppies leftover bread, some believed the killing and disposal of pets wouldnt be dignified.

A History Of Feeding Table Scraps

From medieval times up until the mid-1800s dogs were mainly fed a steady diet of table scraps. They ate things like cabbage, potatoes, and bread crusts – whatever their owners could spare.

As far as meat goes sometimes they were offered bits of knuckle bone or horse meat if they were lucky to live in a more urban area. The diets of these early domesticated dogs were not something that was given a lot of thought. Many of these dogs were used for jobs like hunting or protecting livestock and they were not like the pets we have today.

Optimal Nutrition For Your Dog Or Cat

Dogs and cats need quality protein, fats, and a small amount of vegetables and fruits, which provide antioxidants and fibre to animals that no longer hunt whole prey. Natural sources of trace minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids must be added, since the soils in which foods are grown are depleted of many of the nutrients pets need. Also, food storage, whether its in a freezer or a pantry, decreases critical essential fatty acid levels in foods.

One Fateful Visit To London

Mr. Spratt, an electrician hailing from Ohio, was an enterprising mind. An electrician by trade, his travels eventually sailed him to London on an expedition to sell the newly-invented lightning rod to local merchants and aristocrats.

Instead, what he found waiting for him at the ports of London was a far more lucrative idea: the dog biscuit.

Dog biscuits have an entire history of their own. In European cultures, itd become customary to feed stale bread to dogs biscuits by another name. Dogs bread, in fact, might have been something of an insult at the time used to criticize ones cooking. How rude.

His inspiration for the dog biscuit came when he noticed sailors feeding their ships leftover supplies of hardtack to dogs prowling the quays. It was simple, affordable and to his eyes as tasty to a dog as anything else.

Theres a little truth to the idea that a dog will eat anything. With only about 1,700 tastebuds to our 9,000, there really is a reason they see no problem lapping up that pizza crust off the dirty linoleum. That said, dogs cantaste and do appreciate a little variety in their lives. Dog biscuits were a good place to start, but hardly the finish line.

Domesticated Livestock And A New Source Of Meat

According to How Stuff Works, humans began harvesting and domesticating livestock 9,000 years ago. This meant that humans had easier access to meat and other animal byproducts such as their wool and hides. It would not be beyond the realms of imagination that their faithful companion dogs also got in on the action and got a hold of meat that they didnt have to hunt for as well as bones etc.

This could signal the turning point when dogs stopped being just hunters who would roam with their humans and started becoming working dogs who would not only hunt but guard the growing agriculture boom without as much need to travel long distances in search of food and shelter.

Brief History Of Dog Food

How Its Made: Dog and Cat Food

Dogs have lived beside humans for thousands of years. Only in the past century have commercial dog foods been available for purchase. As people become more conscious of feeding themselves wholesome diets, they have begun to question whether the highly processed dog food that is available on store shelves are really the best for the health and longevity of their dogs, or whether they should be feeding a diet that is more similar to what dogs would have eaten in the past.

Greetings Fellow Pekies,

Following up on last weeks article, The Importance of Adding Human Food To Your Dogs Diet, here is some interesting information about the history of the very profitable Pet Food Industry which is making huge companies billions every year.

Did you know that the advent of manufactured pet food actually came about by accident?

Early humans took a hands-on approach to domesticating dogs. Cats followed humans wherever they travelled or settled because their food were attracted to their grain stores, so became more or less naturally domesticated.

A dogs natural ability to hunt prey that which humans find desirable led to a partnership wherein dogs were originally domesticated and utilised to assist with hunting and for protection. As a result of this strong bond between man and dog, early man shared his dinner with the dogs, and dogs with early man. This is in all probability the explanation for dogs having a better tolerance for plant matter such as fruits and vegetables, whereas cats do not.

More than 2,000 years ago, Roman poet and philosopher Marcus Terentius Varro wrote the first farming manual in which he advised giving farm dogs barley bread soaked in milk, and bones from dead sheep.

The inspiration for the first commercial dog food came from discarded hardtack biscuits that were thrown away by sailors. An entrepreneur named James Spratt created the first commercial dog food in the 1870s after watching street dogs eat these thrown away biscuits. Thanks to aggressive advertising, Spratts dog food quickly began to replace table scraps in the American dogs diet . In 1922, a new pet food option sold under the name of Ken-L Ration gained popularity in the United States. This time the food was sold in a can and consisted mainly of horse meat . Dry dog food kibble did not become commercially available until the 1960s and 1970s when extrusion technology allowed for the creation of a variety of kibble options.

The 2007 pet food recalls involved the massive recall of many brands of cat and dog foods beginning in March 2007. The recalls came in response to reports of renal failure in pets consuming mostly wet pet foods made with wheat gluten from a single Chinese company, beginning in February 2007. After more than three weeks of complaints from consumers, the recall began voluntarily with the Canadian company Menu Foods on March 16, 2007, when a company test showed sickness and death in some of the test animals.

Overall, several major companies recalled more than 100 brands of pet foods, with most of the recalled product coming from Menu Foods. The contaminant was identified as melamine, which had been added as an adulterant to simulate a higher protein content.

Ad Varied Diets And Inclusions In Agricultural Guides

In 70 AD, a prominent Roman agriculture writer called Columella pretty much confirms everything JugDog theorised up until this point but in his work On Agriculture with one addition if you cant give your dog barley and whey then try to give them bread mixed with the liquid from cooked beans.

This suggests a couple of things about dog food at the time: meat may not be so readily available from farming livestock as to give them to the dogs but also that they no longer hunt for their meat. This isnt to say it is true for every dog around the world at the time.

Wed theorise that the typical dogs source of food at this point was entirely the responsibility of their human owners and keepers. This was probably the case for quite some time but there wasnt any confirmation until Columellas work. Whey is once again mentioned and given further recognition as a staple ingredient of a dogs dinner. It appears that Virgils recommendations were followed by the mass population.

Its interesting that Columella mentions adding the liquids from cooked beans, this is likely to make the dog food palatable similar to how dog owners in the present day would mix in wet food alongside the dry kibble. As an interesting side note its clear that the actual beans are too valuable to feed to the dogs!

What Is The Role Of Technological Aid In The Distribution Of Dog Food

How It’s Made: Raw Pet Food

Online platforms allow you to get these products the easiest way possible. One added advantage is how you can read comments from previous clients and analysts.

The ease that comes with technological aid is reflective in the dog food market. As against the old tales method of buying through the store, you can get products delivered to you wherever you are.

What Is the Role of Technological Aid in the Distribution of Dog Food

Reviews and evaluations from experienced users can influence choosing a product.

Also, the prices are usually not affected by local situations. The prices are definite except for shipping cost, which does not always apply.

With the power of ICT, you have all these things within your beck and call. Furthermore, you can also keep tabs with regulatory reviews on products. Companies that have products recalled can be checked online before purchase.

During the pathetic 2007 situation, this is one loophole that was lacking. Many parents did not have access to pet product information as they currently do.

Finally, the evolution of dog food has been influenced by a lot of factors. This trend is not static and is always emerging. For example, world war II played its part in the emergence of box packaged meals and dry food for dogs.

As pet owners, we should pay the required attention to the food intake of our pet companions. They mustnt be exposed to the wrong meals.

The History Of Commercial Pet Food: A Great American Marketing Story

For as long as most of us can remember, pet food has lived in a bag. But before they became domesticated in the mid-1800s, dogs primarily lived outside and ate raw meat or table scraps. It was only after the Industrial Revolution that the growth of a more affluent middle class led to cats and dogs becoming house pets who were considered more civilized companions than their outdoor, working counterparts. Lets take a look back at how the commercial pet food industry got its start.

1800s: The Early Years

The worlds first commercial pet food was developed in 1860 by an electrician named James Spratt. After journeying from Ohio to the United Kingdom to sell lightning rods, Spratt noticed dogs along the riverbanks in Northern London eating leftover hardtack, the dry biscuit sailors ate on long trips. Made of flour, water, and occasionally salt, these inexpensive crackers were used by sailors in need of long lasting, imperishable food during lengthy sea journeys. Spratt reasoned that dog owners were similarly in need of a shelf-stable option for their pets, so he ditched the electrician gig and set out on a new career path, creating the first biscuit for dogs.

1900s: A New Market

2000s today: The Next Frontier

So Where Does That Leave Us Today

Kibble is still very much alive and well in the hearts of dog owners if youre reading this, theres a decent chance its what your family dog grew up on.

But as pet science advanced and pet parents grew increasingly curious about what could keep their dogs working, playing and eating at their best, two new types of dog food entered the picture:

1. Raw food, which wouldnt be exactly fair to characterize as new, began to gain steam in purist communities. A raw food diet does its best to emulate the thousands-of-year-old diets discussed earlier, avoiding extrusion, overprocessing or cooking altogether.2. Fresh food, made with real, cooked ingredients that resemble a dish you yourself would eat, came about as a potential solution to many of the allergies and autoimmune conditions that plague many breeds.

Some point to the Food Safety Modernization Act as the spark the dog food industry needed. Signed into law in 2011 and intended to help clamp down on foodborne illness in human food, the law specifically covers pet food in its purview. The new regulation inspired both manufacturers and customers to think differently about the sourcing, packaging and handling of their pet food, and provided AAFCO with the support it needed to truly make changes for the better.

The rising consumer demand for fresh and raw diets sometimes homemade, sometimes delivered has led to a whole new way of looking at food: something to help dogs flourish, rather than simply survive.
