Question: Keeping Flies Off Dogs

We have one outside dog that is being bitten unmercifully by the flies this year. She is bleeding on her back and ears. Skin so Soft did not work. I had heard rubbing rosemary on the dog would help and I tried that, but it only gave brief relief. I had made some rosemary and garlic oil out of olive oil. I was desperate and rubbed some of this over her and all afternoon the flies have left her alone. Is this safe to continue using?

What not to do

To combat biting flies, people have concocted a wide variety of repellents using artificial chemicals and natural materials. But many of these repellents arent safe for dogs.

Dogs tend to lick themselves, which means they ingest whatever coats their fur. In addition, some substances used in insect repellent even certain essential oils can poison a dog right through their skin.

At high dosages, can cause severe toxicity, so you have to be pretty careful, said Dr. Ai Takeuchi, a veterinarian at Lucerne Veterinary Hospital in Dedham. Tea tree oil is one that a lot of people use in high doses and can cause such a severe allergic reaction in dogs that it can cause liver failure.

Tea tree oil is often used in natural insect repellents. Its also used by people to treat skin problems. So its easy to see how people would assume it to be harmless for dogs.

Something thats natural or thought of as non-chemical doesnt always equate to safe, said Dr. David Cloutier, a veterinarian at Veazie Veterinary Clinic in Veazie. Im cautious about anything Im putting on my dogs skin.

Why Do Flies Bite My Dog

Flies can be drawn to a dogs coat, especially if it is matted or unclean as a result of an illness, skin condition, or diarrhea. Diarrhea around the perineum attracts flies they lay eggs, and the infestation happens, said Dr. Virginia Sinnott, an emergency doctor at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. This type of infestation is preventable by keeping an ill dog clean and indoors, she said.

Some flies, such as horse flies, can take a bite out of your dogs ears, belly or backside which can hurt, bleed and become infected. Though these bites are certainly irritating to our pets, flies dont present the same health risks to dogs that other insects do, Sinnott. Mosquitos are worse, as they bring heartworm disease , which is fatal to dogs and cats.

Flies are particularly active during the day in hot weather, she added, so if they tend to bother your dog, make sure to keep her inside during those times. However, solving any medical issues that may predispose your dog to a fly infestation is most important.

When Do Flies Come Out

I find that around my house in spring flies are coming out earlier and earlier. It seems that as the weather warms up they are starting to come out quite early in the morning.

Flies really do start appearing in early spring, it is strange to me that they arent around in winter or cooler months, so where do they go? Well according to BBC Earth there are lots of flies around actually all year round we just tend not to notice them as much.

What we do notice are the bigger black flies that fly in our face or get on our dogs. These guys hide out over winter in little cracks and crannies they can find and then come out in spring when the weather warms up. They hide under leaves, branches on twigs or tree trunks. They hide out at night in these places too. Then, when it warms up, out they come.

Because of this it is generally safer for your dog outside in the early morning and later evening after the flies have disappeared. It may be more practical however to try some of the fly deterring tips instead of keeping your dog inside all day.

I know for me, I am finding great success with petroleum jelly to protect my dogs ears. I will use this until the flies disappear again. Hopefully that will be soon!
