So if your vet ever says your dog needs to be eating a prescription diet, ask him to review the ingredient list. Then ask him for hard evidence that the foods in the prescription diet are any better than those in regular diets. I think we know what the answer will be. Veterinary Diet Pricing: Competing With The Pet Food Store

Despite its importance, nutrition is routinely given only a cursory mention during veterinary appointments. Veterinarians may brush over the conversation, not wishing to seem like pushy salespersons, and believing that their clients perceive veterinary diets as too expensive.

The reality, however, is that veterinary exclusive diets are highly competitive in price when compared to premium pet food store diets, and in some cases can result in the pet owner saving hundreds of dollars per year.

For the average pet owner, it can be exceedingly difficult to accurately compare the cost of a diet as variable bag sizes and caloric densities can confuse the assessment. The key figure that needs to be determined is the consumption cost, or the cost of feeding per day. Calculating this will allow for an apples to apples analysis of prices among diets.

When the consumption costs are calculated, veterinary exclusive diets are found to be in close competition. and outline the consumption cost of a number of veterinary exclusive diets, as well as premium pet food store diets. The veterinary exclusive diets all have a daily cost to feed that is either lower than, or close to these common premium foods sold in pet stores. Indeed, some of the most popular premium diets are significantly more expensive in pet stores on a cost per day basis.

Great Food For My Cat With Urinary Issues

I am not sure why viewpoints says this food is being discontinued or has been because it is not. I am still buying it unless just the certain size of the bag is being discontinued. This food is great stuff. My male cat ended up blocked a few years ago and almost died. After a week in the animal hospital his life was saved we transitioned him over to the urinary so diet to try to avoid any other blockages. It is common for male cats to block again after it has happened once so I was very nervous. I initially had to mix in some of his old food with the urinary so because he was being a pain about the switch. Initially he was picking around the urinary so kibble but eventually he started to eat it Since he has been on this food he has not had any issues. Beware though, this food is high in calories so my male cat blew up on this food and gained a bunch of weight. I ended up having to switch him to the moderate calorie version which of course is more expensive.

Why Do Vets Recommend Hills And Royal Canin

Why do pet review websites rate Hills and Royal Canin products poorly, but vets recommend them highly?

Read on, and Ill enlighten you somewhat

Take a look at the ingredients on any bag of Hills Prescription or Science Diet dry food. Youll see theyre mostly grains wheat, sorghum, corn, rice. Youll find much more grain in these products than meat. Dogs are essentially carnivores, cats are obligate carnivores. They depend on the highly bio available essential amino acids in meat to retain optimal health.

Cats are classified as hypercarnivores, requiring at least 70% meat in their diet . These foods can contain over 70% grain.

Its not rocket science.

Feeding your pets excessive grains baked into a kibble is far from optimal, dont you think?

So why on earth do vets recommend these products?

Heres a reason -> VETS HAVE SEEN THESE PRODUCTS WORK!

Yep, thats true. Many vets see an improvement in pet health when they are transitioned to Hills products. Pretty convincing evidence, wouldnt you agree?

But its a glaring oversight.

Let me explain

Most kibble is absolute rubbish. Junk food. Convenience products designed for profit. Sadly business is business, and if these manufacturers put your pets before profit theyll never succeed. Thats the fundamental reason why most dog foods are unhealthy.

Unfortunately for our pets most people dont realise how bad some of these products are, and they feed them continuously to the pets they love. Every. Single. Day.
