Human Foods that are Not Safe for Dogs

Bananas make a sweet, low calorie treat for dogs in moderation.

Because our furry family members are family after all, its fun to share goodies with them every once in a while. If youre sick of learning about foods dogs cant eat and would prefer a list of foods you can share with Fido, then take a look below.

Some human foods you can safely share with your dog include:

  • Carrots
  • Cooked Chicken, Turkey, Beef or Pork
  • Small Amounts Of Cheese
  • Oranges
  • And Potatoes

Remember that the above foods, while safe to share with your four-legged friend, should only be given in moderation. Dairy products, nuts, and sugary fruits especially need to be monitored as these human foods have a higher chance of causing stomach upset and digestive issues.

It is also vital to always remove pits, seeds, and cores from fruits and veggies before giving them to your dog.

We should further note that all dogs are unique. Like people, different dogs can have different sensitivities to different foods. If youre ever not sure if your dog should or shouldnt eat something, we always suggest playing it safe and keeping the food from your dog until you know for certain.

So, what do you think about sharing human food with your dog? Have you ever been tempted to share foods with your dog that you now see are on our list of foods dogs cant eat? We would love to hear from you.

Lilies Holly And Other Plants

While any kind of plant material may upset your pets stomach, some are more dangerous than others. A few common ones that can make them sick include lilies, mistletoe, holly, tulip and daffodil bulbs, azaleas, rhododendrons, and chrysanthemums. Even small amounts of certain types of lilies can cause kidney failure in cats.

Can Dogs Eat Popcorn

The corn itself is fine for dogs to eat, but the hull can be dangerous for pets, especially those with smaller throats. The kernel can get stuck between teeth, scrape the throat, or get lodged in your dogs airway.

Additionally, the toppings you put on popcorn could cause issues for dogs. Salt, butter, and other unhealthy popcorn additives can cause digestive problems, diarrhea, and dehydration. Over time, this could also contribute to kidney damage and obesity.

Dangers In The Bathroom

Both over the counter and prescription medicines can be toxic to dogs. Note that even supplements and ointments like estrogen cream are harmful to dogs.

Vitamins. Like medicines, vitamins that are made for people can be extremely dangerous for dogs. Its easy for dogs to overdose on common fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K.

Soaps. Some bath products smell delicious to a dogs nose, so never let your dog have access to your shower supplies.

Nicotine patches. Nicotine is toxic to dogs, and a curious hound might be inclined to chew on them. Be sure to keep them safe in a cabinet and dispose of them in a dog-proof trash can. Also, be sure to keep cigarettes and chewing tobacco out of your dogs reach!

Sunscreen, lotion, and bug spray. Many skin care formulas can be toxic to dogs, so keep products for human skin away from canine mouths.

Bathroom cleaners. Of course, you should always dog-proof any cabinet that contains cleaning products. Chemicals in cleaning products are highly toxic. Keep your dog away from recently-cleaned wet surfaces, too. Always make sure to close toilet lids after cleansing the commode.

Bravo Packing Performance Dog

Can My Dog Eat This

We normally like raw pet food because most of these are free from fillers and the meat included are in their purest forms, free from processing of any kind. However, in the case of Bravo Packings raw diet, wed have to rethink this.

Bravo Packings Performance Dog and all of Bravo Packings other raw diets have undergone a recall this year.

Although no deaths or illnesses have been associated with the food, it is troubling that the brand has once again been involved with a recall.

From 2011 to 2015, Bravo had 7 recalls, which included expanded recalls.

There was another in 2018 and another in 2019 before the one for 2021. All of the past recalls were due to the possible presence of Salmonella or Listeria.

Recall Info: On March 3, 2021, Bravo Packing, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of two of their raw pet food products for possible cross contamination after samples collected during a US Food and Drug Administration inspection tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

The brand expanded the recall on March 16 to include ALL of its pet food and bone products of all sizes. No lot code or date code has been provided for the recent recall so assume, for the safety of your pets, that all are possibly contaminated.

Things To Tell Your Vet

  • What poison you think your dog has been exposed to . Include any product names, or lists of ingredients if relevant
  • How much they may have been exposed to
  • When your dog was exposed to the poison
  • If your dog has been unwell and, if so, what clinical effects have been seen

It is easier for a vet to care for a poisoned dog if it is treated sooner rather than later. If you are in any doubt, don’t wait for your dog to become unwell before calling for advice.

Purina Dog Chow Complete With Real Chicken

Its proudly tagged as having 23 vitamins and minerals as well as containing real chicken, so youd expect it to be a healthy chicken-based dish for your pup. But that would be wrong.

There is no chicken to be found within the first five ingredients. But wheres the chicken? Its in the 7th slot, after the corns and legume.

Well list down the first five ingredients here: Whole Grain Corn, Meat And Bone Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Beef Fat Naturally Preserved With Mixed-Tocopherols, Soybean Meal. Thats a significant amount of corn and soybean when put together.

We dont have a problem with corn. We recognize that corn contains nutrients and is not a filler. In most cases. However, for a recipe thats not formulated to target specific canine medical conditions, wed expect the corn to be merely a supporting ingredient and not the main one. Quality dog food should always contain more meat than carbohydrates.;

The second thing weve noticed is that most of the meats are unnamed. Thats a red flag in dog food. While an unspecified meat ingredient will not harm your pup, its kind of worrying that you dont know whats going in your pets food. Itll even be more worrying if your pet turns out to be sensitive to the ingredient included.

Theres Meat And Bone Meal and Poultry By-Product Meal. What meat do these refer to? Pork, beef, chicken? What kind of poultry? Turkey or chicken?
