Purina Dog Food Recalls 2021

Is Dog Chow Made In The United States

Dog food recall

The Nestle Purina PetCare Company is the second-largest manufacturer of pet food products worldwide, having operations in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Though the Purina brand of pet foods is available all over the world, the Purina website states that 99% of their products are made in the United States.

Neither the Purina website nor the Dog Chow website state whether this is true of Dog Chow and Puppy Chow products.

Purina Dog Food Journey

The Nestlé company was founded in 1867 when Henri Nestlé formulated the first source of nutrition for little kids that could not be breastfed by their mothers. Shortly after, the firm started to produce chocolate milk followed by many other products.

On the other hand, the Robinson-Danforth was founded in 1894 with the aim of creating a balanced food for animals. It was the first company in the world to offer balanced food for animals.

Ralston Purina started as a partnership between Purina and Dr. Ralston, a nutrition specialist to manufacture whole grain cereal. The main challenge for the company was to fine-tune people to start eating cereal for breakfast. And I guess that is what most of us eat now, right?

The company was promoting its products using the: Where purity is supreme slogan at the time and it was then that the name Purina was born.

And where did the red and square logo come from?

This logo originated from William Danforths childhood memory. He said that the Browns, his neighboring family, clothed all their kids with this strange pattern to help them recognize their kids at the Universal Exhibition in St. Louis, Missouri.

In 1902, Danforth took on this distinctive pattern, and it was during this time that the pet food company changed its name to Ralston Purina.

Prevention Of Illness In Pets

As of 4 May, the FDA advised: “If your pet food is not listed , the pet food is not affected by the recall and you can continue to feed it to your pets however, if your pet exhibits a sudden onset of symptoms including loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, stop feeding the pet food and contact your veterinarian.”

The growing number of recalls has motivated at least one well-known animal protection organization, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to recommend “until this crisis is resolved … pets be fed products containing U. S.-sourced protein supplements only.”

What Type Of Dog Might Do Better With A Different Food

If your dog is extremely active, you should consider getting them formula with more calories and protein. Most working dogs will fall into this category. However, dogs with very intense hobbies will likely need higher calorie food, as well. This formula is not made for extremely active dogs.

At the same time, if your dog is overweight or a couch potato, you may want to consider weight control dog food instead. This formula is made for very average dogs, which means that your canine needs to be getting at least some exercise.

While the primary ingredient in this food is lamb, it does contain chicken. Therefore, this food isnt particularly great for dogs with allergies, despite some suggestions. If your dog is allergic to beef or a different formula, this food may work, though. We simply dont recommend it for dogs with chicken allergies.

What Is A Pet Food Recall

When a pet food is recalled, its taken off the market by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration . A pet food can be recalled if:

  • It violates FDA regulations
  • It can cause death

But just because something gets recalled doesnt necessarily mean that product is recalled forever.

According to the FDA, a recall is terminated when all reasonable efforts have been made to remove or correct the violative product and proper disposition has been made according to the degree of hazard.

So, more pet foods than the ones listed below have been recalled in the past five years, but those recalls have since been terminated. Were only including recalls that are still active, which means there can still be risks associated with using that product.

Puppy Chow Complete With Chicken & Rice

Dog Food Recall February 2021

This Puppy Chow Complete recipe is marketed as a recipe designed specifically for puppies. The formula is described as a healthy blend of high-quality proteins and all of the ingredients puppies need to set the foundation for a healthy and active life.

All it takes is a quick review of the ingredients list, however, to reveal that this recipe is not a healthy foundation for any dog.

The first two ingredients on the list for this recipe are whole grain corn and corn gluten meal. This is problematic for multiple reasons. For one thing, corn is very difficult to digest. Furthermore, corn products offer limited nutritional value for dogs. Whole grain corn is a carbohydrate that is included to provide a source of energy but corn gluten meal is used as a type of protein.

The problem with corn gluten meal as a protein source is that it is plant-based this means that it is difficult for your dog to digest, and it doesnt contain all of the essential amino acids he needs. The only animal proteins used in this recipe is chicken by-product meal.

The remaining ingredients in this formula consist primarily of fats, artificial flavors, colors, and synthetic supplements. The main source of fat in this product is animal fat.

Overall, this kibble has very few things going for it. Not only does it start with a low-quality filler ingredient, but the only animal source of protein comes from a by-product.

What Happens In A Dog Food Recall

Dog food recall can happen to any dog food company, including the Performatrin dog food recall.

Once this happens, you should stop giving your pup the recalled dog food.

You need to find another dog food with similar ingredients but do your research first.

You also need to monitor your dog for any symptoms of illness or discomfort.

Dog Chow High Protein Beef In Savory Gravy

Some dogs need a higher than average amount of protein in their diet to help fuel their extra-active lifestyle, assist them in losing weight, or provide their high dosage needs due to lactation or gestation. Whatever the reason, this wet food range provides 40 grams of protein in every can of wet food.

The first ingredient in this beef recipe is water. Theres nothing strange about this as wet foods usually have water or broth as the first ingredient for the moisture content.

The second ingredient, however, is surprising. Its chicken, instead of beef. This means that chicken makes up the bulk of the recipe apart from water. So while a bit misleading, the inclusion of chicken is not something we can complain about. Its an excellent meat source thats full of protein and is a favorite among most canines.

Wheat gluten as the third ingredient is a bit controversial. While some argue that its an allergen, true gluten sensitivity in canines is rare. And if your pup was not allergic to gluten before, consumption of this ingredient will not make him develop an allergic reaction to it.

Were not against gluten because it is a good supportive protein source next to chicken and is highly digestible by the small intestine.

Alpo Prime Cuts Savory Beef Flavor Dry Dog Food

Key features:

  • The first 5 ingredients are Ground Yellow Corn, Meat And Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Beef Fat, Corn Gluten Meal
  • Contains 23 essential vitamins and minerals
  • Features Calcium for bone health
  • Formulated for adult dogs
  • Made in the USA

Well, if youre looking for premium dog food with high-quality ingredients, you wont like Purina ALPO Prime Cuts. The first ingredient is not real meat, but Yellow Corn.

Moreover, there is virtually no real meat in this recipe. The main protein sources are Meat And Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, and Corn Gluten Meal.

I hope I dont have to say how unhealthy this is for dogs. Animal sources are not named, so their quality is uncontrollable. And plant protein sources are biologically low in value for dogs.

The protein content of the product is 18%, which meets the requirements of AAFCO however, I do not really recommend this product due to the quality of the proteins.

In addition, artificial colors can be found among the ingredients. Although these are allowed, I still believe that these compounds are disadvantageous in the diet of dogs.

The overall picture is somewhat improved by the fact that the recipe contains added vitamins and minerals. This balances the nutrients somewhat.

Finding the best diet for your dog is not easy. You have to consider several aspects, e.g., activity, breed, age, health condition, etc. If you want to make the best decision possible, check out my comprehensive guide on how to choose the best dog food.
