Proper Nutrition For Dogs

Like humans, dogs have nutritional needs that must be met in order for them to thrive. Dogs’ nutritional needs differ from our own, so you can’t exactly start sharing your own dinner with your dog. Feeding an incomplete or imbalanced diet can lead to vitamin and nutrient deficiencies in dogs.

Dogs need enough calories to meet their energy requirements. A dog’s daily caloric need depends on the dog’s life stage and activity level. Your veterinarian can help you determine how many calories your dog needs each day.

A homemade dog diet should contain an appropriate balance of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat. Vitamins and minerals must be added to the food to ensure it is complete and balanced.

  • At least 10% protein, such as chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef
  • Up to 50% carbohydrates, such as rice, pasta, and potatoes
  • About 2.5-4.5% fiber, which can come from vegetables like peas, green beans, and carrots
  • At least 5.5% fat, usually in the form of vegetable oil
  • Vitamin and mineral supplements

If you are ready to get started cooking for your dog, the first step is to talk to your veterinarian. Your vet may have recipes for you to try. Or you may need a referral to a veterinary nutritionist or a vet that focuses on canine nutrition.

Is Fish Good For Dogs

How to Cook Fish for Dogs

Yes! not only can dogs eat fish, but fish is good for dogs.

First, most dogs think that fish is delicious!

In fact, my dogs favorite treats are a salmon cookie. And I have a tuna treat recipe I want to try soon.

Second, fish contains a ton of omega-3 fatty acids.

These are great for brain and heart health and so much more!

Now, some dogs are allergic to fish. So, if your dog hasnt had fish before, check in with your vet and keep an eye on them the first couple times you give them these fish dinners.

Usually, the allergy is mostly itchy rather than dangerous. But its best not to take risks.

In most of these recipes youll be able to substitute ingredients for both the fish and the carbs using other grains.

Important note: If you do go with a regular homemade diet for your dogs using these recipes or others make sure you check with your vet. Im not a vet and while I use these recipes regularly . Its a good idea to check with your vet to make sure your dogs nutritional needs are met.

Meats To Add To Your Dog’s Diet

Raw or cooked meat is the main ingredient in homemade dog foods. Dogs are obligate carnivores who need a protein-based diet. You want to choose fresh meat that is fit for human consumption. When it comes to fat content, it should not be greater than 15 to 20%.

Because muscle meats are essential ingredients in a raw diet, take care when selecting meat for your dog. Most dogs have a preference for diced or ground beef, and the following are the best meats for dogs to eat:

    • Beef: Lean pre-ground stewing meat, heart, boneless steak or roast
    • Lamb: Pre-ground boneless stewing meat shank, leg, or butt
    • Poultry: Pre-ground boneless, skinless breast fillet, or thigh
    • Venison: Pre-ground stewing meat neck, shank, or shoulder

You can also use exotic meats such as buffalo, caribou, elk, moose, duck or rabbit. Because feeding raw fish can lead to a thiamine deficiency*, we don’t recommend the use of fish.

Try your local butcher or meat processor for a fresh food diet. Supermarkets don’t always supply in bulk quantities, and their pre-packaged meats can make it harder to obtain the right amount for the recipe. A butcher will be glad to weigh your meat and grind it for you on the spot.

Things To Avoid When Making Dog Food At Home

Here are some common human foods you should avoid when preparing your dog’s food: raw beans, peas, spinach, beet greens, kale , chard, onions, garlic, leek, green tomato, potato, and bell peppers.

    • Avoid feeding your dog raw green beans because they contain a toxic alkaloid similar to arsenic. Cooking green beans will destroy these toxins.
    • Avoid raw, un-aged garlic. It irritates the mouth, esophagus, and stomach and can cause or exacerbate ulcers.
    • The use of other members of the Lily family, such as onions, garlic, shallots, and chives, is also not recommended. Dogs can’t eat these plants in a raw, cooked, or dried form because it can lead to damage to the red blood cells.
    • The nightshade family of plants, such as bell peppers, potatoes, and tomatoes, contains an alkaloid called “Solanine”, which can be toxic. Solanine is poisonous to humans too, but we would have to eat it in a much more concentrated amount, like that found in potato sprouts or green potatoes, to induce sickness.
    • Avoid feeding carbohydrates, such as corn, wheat, rice, brown rice and potatoes. Dogs don’t chew as people do, and their bodies can’t process vegetables as efficiently as ours. They also lack the digestive enzymes to break down and metabolize carbs.
