Case Links Years Of Zero Grain Dog Food Use To Plaintiffs Dogs Heart Condition
Per the suit, the plaintiffs dog suffered a seizure in 2018 after a period of declining health. Thereafter, the plaintiff continued to feed her dog Nutrish Zero Grain given she was unaware that the food did not contain taurine, the lawsuit says.
In October 2018, the plaintiff took her dog to a veterinarian who prescribed medications for heart failure, the case continues. According to the suit, the vet noted the plaintiffs dog had severe cardiomegaly, consistent with DCM. The dog will be on heart medication for the rest of its life, the lawsuit says.
The plaintiff asserts in the lawsuit that she reasonably relied on both the defendants advertising and marketing representations and Rachel Rays persona as a chef who cooks health food in believing Nutrish Zero Grain dog food could offer a nutritionally balanced, complete diet for her dog. Per the suit, the woman would have paid far less than the $30 retail price, or would not have bought the product at all, had she known the defendants concealed the potentially life-threatening dangers associated with the food.
Through this action, Plaintiff is not seeking damages relating to Olivers injury, the complaint reads. Rather, Plaintiff is seeking damages and restitution relating to her years-long purchase of Defendants Nutrish Zero Grain dog food.

Carbohydrates: Ground Rice + Ground Corn
Ground rice and corn are the two primary carbohydrates included in the Real Chicken & Veggies recipe. Generally speaking, these are regarded as low-quality carbohydrates, and most premium dog foods avoid them.
Note that dogs do not require carbohydrates at all they are only included in dog foods because they are an inexpensive source of calories.
In a perfect world, youd probably feed your dog a diet primarily comprised of proteins and healthy fats. But this would be quite expensive to do several thousand calories of chicken per week would cost a pretty penny.
Ground rice is essentially rice flour, and while it is free of glutens, it doesnt provide a whole lot of nutritional value, aside from the calories it contains. Corn is not a problem for dogs who arent allergic to it, but it is generally avoided by most premium dog food manufacturers.
Real Chicken & Veggies derives about 41% of its calories from carbohydrates. While theres nothing necessarily wrong with this, it is far more than would be ideal.
Controversial Ingredients: Beet Pulp + Iron Oxide
There are a few ingredients listed on the Rachael Ray Real Chicken & Veggies Recipe that give some owners pause. While none of these are likely to cause harm to your dog, some owners prefer to select foods that avoid them entirely.
The two most problematic ingredients in the recipe are beet pulp and iron oxide.
Beet pulp is actually a pretty good source of fiber, but many owners look at it as a cheap filler that fails to provide much nutritional value. As long as it is only included in moderate amounts, it is unlikely to cause any problems.
Iron oxide is essentially rust that is used as a food dye. This may not be a deal-breaker for you, but it is important to note that food colors and dyes are entirely unnecessary additives for your dogs diet, and they only serve to make the food look tastier to you your dog doesnt care about the color of his food.

Rachael Ray Dog Food Company Overview
Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food is a collaboration between celebrity chef and TV personality Rachael Ray and Ainsworth Pet Nutrition. Ainsworth has been in the business of making high quality pet foods for more than 80 years. Ainsworth approached Ray in 2008 for the possibility of establishing a brand of dog food that follows the recipes Ray has been producing for her pet Pit Bull terrier, Isaboo. This was after Ray and her husband spoke passionately on television about their love for animals especially their beloved Pit Bull.
The collaboration provided for a very specific clause which says that proceeds of the sale of each Rachael Ray Nutrish product should go to the funding of one of Rays charitable organizations dedicated to provide assistance to animals in need of medical treatments, food, and other needs. Rachaels Rescue also funds no-kill animal shelters throughout the country.
In spring 2018, Ainsworth Pet Nutrition was bought by J. M. Smucker for $1.9 billion effectively transferring ownership of the Rachael Ray dog food brand to the new company.

There are available in a wide range of flavors including chicken, pepperoni, beef, turkey bacon, and bison and theres no use of corn, wheat or artificial flavorings or byproducts that you will usually see in low grade treats.
Instead, the treats focus on real meat protein as the primary ingredient, along with a few flavorings here and there to increase the flavor and ensure your dog loves to be them.

Class Action Lawsuit Alleges Rachel Ray Nutrish Zero Grain Dog Food Hazardous To Dogs Health
A proposed class action alleges Rachel Ray Nutrish-brand Zero Grain dog food is harmful to dogs in that the product is deficient of taurine and contains legume-based protein, a combination linked to a potentially fatal heart condition when used in grain-free foods.
The plaintiff, a Los Angeles resident, claims consumers would not have bought the premium-priced dog food, sometimes paying up to double what competitors charge for similar products, absent the defendants deceptive and misleading representations.
In other words, Plaintiff and the Class were actually paying more for less healthy foods, the lawsuit says.
Overall Is Rachael Ray Cat Food A Good Choice
On the bright side, Rachael Ray cat food is one of the few budget cat foods made from identifiable ingredients rather than anonymous animal by-products.
Theoretically, this means that the animal ingredients are held to a higher standard than those falling into the by-product category, making the foods safer and more digestible than others at the same price point.
That said, Rachael Ray Nutrish foods tend to contain large amounts of plant ingredients. High-carb diets can contribute to diabetes and plant protein is less efficiently digested than protein from animal sources.

How Does Rachael Ray Dog Food Compare To Other Super Premium Brands
It should be noted that there are generally a lot more ingredients in Rachael Ray dog food than in some of the other expensive dog food brands. Dog owners who believe their dog should follow a mainly carnivorous diet, or a low carb and protein-rich diet, may be deterred by the fairly average animal protein content of the recipes and the inclusion of carbohydrates such as rice or potatoes near the top of the ingredients listings. Although the real meat from US farms is a better ingredient than imported meat of unknown origin, and the ingredients are safe for dogs to consume, the dog food isnt suitable for human consumption, whereas some super premium brands are.
The Zero Grain and Just 6 recipes are perhaps the best in the dry food range, as they are aimed at dogs with allergies and sensitivities. So overall, although Rachael Ray may not be the very best dog food available, it does have many good attributes that make it appealing to dog owners.
Rachael Ray Wet Dog Food Products
The product line would not be complete without a few tasty wet dog food options, and its certainly advisable to mix in some wet food with your dogs kibble to ensure their getting enough moisture through their food, as well as give them a tastier meal thatll keep their appetite engaged and provide an enjoyable experience every time.
Simply put, theres one main option to consider here and its known as the Rachael Ray Nutrish Natural Wet Dog Food.
This formulation comes in many different flavors which include beef stroganoff, chicken pie, beef stew, duck stew, lamb stew, chicken bowls of pasta, and a convenient variety pack which allows you to give plenty of choice.
Importantly, the food is made using real meats, and theres no low-grade fillers, meat by-products, corn, soy, or wheat.
Instead, the formula uses real ingredients that your dog will certainly appreciate, and the cans of wet food are surprisingly affordable given the quality thats on offer here, making it a great option for mixing with your dogs kibble from time to time.
