At The End Of 2019 During Our Yearly Vet Check We Received The Horrible News That Our Dog Was In Stage 4 Kidney Failure

Honestly, I was in total shock, how did we miss this?! He is with me all day, every day!! He just seemed like he was dealing with some symptoms of old age frequent urination, sometimes excessive water drinking, and I would notice occasionally that he would have a mild case of diarrhea. It definitely didnt feel like life threatening symptoms to us! As much as the diagnosis was a shock, the price tag of the prescription diet that we were told he would need to eat for the remainder of his life was pretty horrifying too! When I asked our vet how long we had left with him the prognosis wasn’t good, 3-6 months maybe 9 if we were lucky. We had to wait 6 weeks for a follow up blood panel to really know what kind of timeline we were looking at.

How Much Does It Cost To Feed A Dog A Raw Diet

How to Make Your Own Dog Food

In general, feeding a 10-kilogramme dog raw food might cost anywhere from SGD$3.00 per day.

The dogs weight mainly determines the amount you spend. For instance, large dogs consume more, so their meals will be more pricy.

But the type of meat used in the meal can also affect the cost. For example, chicken dinners are the least expensive, and lamb is the most costly.

Common Mistakes When Cooking For Your Dog

    Not Using Trusted Sources

There are many inadequate, and sometimes dangerous recipes, available to owners, says Dr. Larsen. There are now many studies demonstrating that most of these are not balanced.

Some of these may cause deficiencies in your dogs diet, while others may lead to an excess of certain nutrients. To avoid encountering unhealthy or dangerous options Dr. Larsen and Dr. Bartges recommend avoiding generic recipes from books or online sources. Some so-called nutrition experts are without proper training, and may do more harm than good.

Larsen and Bartges also suggest consulting BalanceIT.com, a site run by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, to help create a semi-individualized diet.

    Not Preparing Balanced Meals

When you dont prepare balanced meals that are individualized to your pets needs, it can come at a cost. Nutrition deficiency can lead to diseases, such as malnutrition or obesity, and can ultimately be fatal.

Each of the ~40 essential nutrients required by dogs has a specific role in the body. When they are provided in inadequate concentrations, the function is not optimal and suffering may result, explains Dr. Larsen. Similarly, nutrient excesses can also cause illness. While the impact of an unbalanced diet may be mild and not even noticed or attributed to the diet by the owner, these problems can also be very severe, and pets do not always survive.

What Kind Of Snacks Can I Feed A Dog With Kidney Disease

Our dogs seriously LOVE snack time, but snack time has had to seriously change! Dogs with kidney disease should avoid meat based chews/treats that are high in phosphorus, so you may find that you need to explore new types of treats for your dog instead. My probiotic rich Pumpkin & Yogurt Bowlsare our dog’s favorite treat these days! They also really enjoy thin apple slices, blueberries, and fresh banana chunks. When it comes to crunchy chews they both are SUPER into dehydrated banana chips, pumpkin, and sweet potato. I swear, our dog’s drool for them like they are the jerky chews we used to treat them with!

    Benefits Of Feeding Kibble

In our opinion, a kibble diet is the easiest and can provide a very balanced diet. After all, dogs have been fed kibble much longer than some other diets and have all been healthy in their development. Just because your dog is picky, that doesnt mean you should give in just yet. Other than balanced nutrition, what good can come from feeding dry food to your dog?

    Is Homemade Dog Food Better

Because you can provide natural ingredients and organic ingredients for your dog, its often better to make your own.

There are two main things to consider with homemade dog food: quality control and bioavailability. By taking these points under advisement, you can determine whether homemade food is best.

    Quality control

When youre responsible for making your pets food, you have complete control over ingredients. This process allows you to know where the ingredients come from and what goes into the formula.

Since pet parents have significant concerns about store-bought food quality, this can give you peace of mind.

On the other hand, youre solely responsible for ensuring your pets get the nutrition they need. As youre likely not a veterinarian, this is a huge responsibility for any owner. Be sure to discuss with your vet what your homemade dog food recipes typically contain.

Fortunately, you wont have to worry about dealing with the big name recalls from pet food manufacturers.

    Bioavailability

Bioavailability is another advantage to homemade dog food because fresh food has far more nutrients. If you compare grocery produce to processed food, far more vitamins and minerals are ready to be consumed.

Although, it is important to remember that no matter how precise you are, your pets could be lacking nutrition. This reason is why adding a multivitamin to your dogs daily routine should be essential with homemade meals.

Low Carb High Protein Home Made Dog Food

Pin by Lori Robb on Recipes

Your pet is family, and thus deserves only the best ingredients with no fillers or added sugars or spices. Your dog needs protein from animal meat, seafood, dairy, and eggs. They need fat from meat or oil and carbohydrates from grains or vegetables. In addition, essential fatty acids from plant oils, egg yolks, oatmeal, and other foods. The question is in what amounts? After much research, the author has created a recipe that their dogs love. A must try!

    Ingredients
    Directions
  • Cook rice per label instructions. In a second pot boil the chicken gizzards until cooked thoroughly – about 10 minutes. Add eggs to this pot for the last 5 minutes to hard boil.
  • In a third very large pot cook the ground beef and ground turkey until browned. Drain off most of the fat and remove from the heat.
  • Use a food processor to grind the raw peas, raw broccoli, raw cauliflower, 1/2 apple , cooled gizzards, and peeled eggs. This may take two batches.
  • Microwave sweet potato for 3-4 minutes until soft.
  • Add all ingredients, including the canned salmon or tuina, to the large pot with the beef and turkey. Add cottage cheese and coconut oil at the end. Mix well with a wooden spoon to incorporate.

How Dry Pet Food Is Made

While there are numerous ways to making dry pet food, the most commonly used process is extrusion. This process was adapted for making pet food in the 1950s based upon technology used to make puffed breakfast cereals. The diagram on Making Pet Food by Extrusion illustrates the process:

  • Ingredients are brought together in a mixer. Dry ingredients may be ground prior to introduction to wet ingredients. Once mixed together, they form a moist dough.
  • The dough is heated in the preconditioner prior to introduction to the extruder.
  • The extruder, essentially a giant meat grinder, is where the primary cooking phase for dry extruded pet food products occurs. The dough is cooked under intense heat and pressure as it moves toward the open end of the extruder. At the end of the extruder, hot dough passes through a shaping die and knife where the small pieces expand rapidly into kibble once they are under standard air pressure.
  • Kibble is dried in an oven until its moisture content is low enough to make it shelf stable like a cookie or cracker. The drying oven is followed by a cooling phase.
  • After cooling, kibble may pass through a machine that sprays on a coating, which is generally a flavor enhancer.
  • Packaging is filled during the last step to precise amounts to meet the weight advertised on the label. The final result is finished pet foods or treats.

    Homemade Chicken Dinner For Dogs

As you have learned from the earlier recipes, dogs cant get enough of chicken. This explains why we are using this poultry again for this simple dinner for our canine friends. Moreover, this simple DIY food for dogs makes use of vegetables like cabbage and spinach. You will also use apples to make this recipe.

You can also swap out some of the veggies used in this recipe, like carrots for red cabbage. But you should cook carrots if you decide to use them because the orange veggies arent the easiest foods for dogs to digest.

    Ingredients:

    • 5 whole eggs
    • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

It is up to you what type of chicken to use. You can use whole chicken which includes the heart, liver, and neck. Of you can settle for boneless skinless chicken breast, or frozen chicken breast which is best when cooked.

    Step by step guide:

    • Chop up the chicken and put in a suitable sized pot. Bring it to a boil.
    • Reduce to a simmer then add the remaining ingredients. Let it simmer until the chicken is done.
    • Remove the pot from the stove. Add the eggs and olive oil once it is cool then stir.

You can keep the leftover in an airtight container and then put this in the refrigerator. The meal should be safe enough for your dogs consumption up to five days.

As for the serving, you can give a large dog up to 2 ½ cups of this food which should last for 2 days.

How to Make Homemade Dog Food | Just Food For Dogs

Many dog food recipes fall short in certain nutrients, especially iron, copper, calcium, and zinc. Even some recipes created by veterinarians don’t measure up. The University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine tested 200 recipes, many written by vets. The researchers found most of the recipes were short on some essential nutrients.

The best way to make sure a recipe has what it takes is to choose one created by an expert with training in dog nutrition, says Jennifer Larsen, DVM, PhD. That might be a certified pet nutritionist or a PhD-trained animal nutritionist with experience making pet food. Your vet should be able to point you in the right direction.

Your pet needs protein , fat and carbohydrates . They also need calcium , and essential fatty acids .

And if that’s not enough to consider, if your dog has a health problem, they may need a special diet. You may need a pet nutrition expert to create custom recipes.

    Proper Nutrition For Dogs

Like humans, dogs have nutritional needs that must be met in order for them to thrive. Dogs’ nutritional needs differ from our own, so you can’t exactly start sharing your own dinner with your dog. Feeding an incomplete or imbalanced diet can lead to vitamin and nutrient deficiencies in dogs.

Dogs need enough calories to meet their energy requirements. A dog’s daily caloric need depends on the dog’s life stage and activity level. Your veterinarian can help you determine how many calories your dog needs each day.

A homemade dog diet should contain an appropriate balance of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat. Vitamins and minerals must be added to the food to ensure it is complete and balanced.

    • At least 10% protein, such as chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef
    • Up to 50% carbohydrates, such as rice, pasta, and potatoes
    • About 2.5-4.5% fiber, which can come from vegetables like peas, green beans, and carrots
    • At least 5.5% fat, usually in the form of vegetable oil
    • Vitamin and mineral supplements

If you are ready to get started cooking for your dog, the first step is to talk to your veterinarian. Your vet may have recipes for you to try. Or you may need a referral to a veterinary nutritionist or a vet that focuses on canine nutrition.
