Why Feed Your Dog Wet Food

Vet Advice | Should I Feed My Dog Wet or Dry Food?

As a dog owner, it’s up to you to choose the diet that best suits your canine companion.

Many people opt for kibble due to its lower cost and convenience, but for others, wet dog food is the only way to go. Wet dog food tends to contain larger amounts of meat and fewer grains and filler ingredients, which is preferred for many dog owners. While dogs need some grains and starches in their diet, many commercial kibbles go too far.

Wet food is also generally more palatable than dry food, which encourages fussy eaters or senior dogs that are losing their appetites to eat more.

Why Do Cats Need Wet Food

Many veterinarians recommend that cats eat a diet of exclusively or mostly wet food. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, cats are obligate carnivores and are not designed to ingest many carbohydrates . Dry food will automatically contain many more carbohydrates than wet food. For many cats, dry food consumption leads to obesity.

Secondly, most cats are not big water drinkers and tend to keep themselves on the edge of dehydration. Wet food naturally provides more water in the diet, which supports the kidneys, urinary tract, and overall health.

Few Points To Consider Before Setting The Amount Of Food To Give

If humans can overeat, so do dogs. Its one of my fears for my pet, which is why I restrict the amount of food I give to him. I stick to his right diet to make sure that I keep him healthy. In setting the right amount, here are the things I considered:

  • Check the Age or Stage of Life Its crucial to differentiate the nutritional needs of a growing pup from an aging one. These stages use a different amount of food for a young and an old dog, depending on their bodies need. I used to have an old dog before, and I take him to a veterinarian to seek advice regarding the amount and type of food that my pet needs.
  • Check the Health I also had to consider my dogs health condition. Its important to know if he has cancer or diabetes, so I can look for the ideal dog food that he can eat safely. Also, dental health is vital when it comes to chewing treats to protect his teeth from undesirable circumstances.
  • Check the Activity Level and Body There are active puppies, and there are not. My dogs activity level is high, which is why I had to feed it with nutrient-dense foods. Moreover, since his bodys underweight as well, hell undoubtedly need to eat more nutritious dog foods.
  • Check the Preference I had some troubles in feeding my pet before, especially when someone from the neighborhood gave him human food. It took me how many weeks until I got him back to dog foods. I had to let him taste different dog foods until I found the brand that suited his taste.

Pedigree Chunky Ground Dinner With Chicken Canned Dog Food ...

You should never feed your dog black beans with added salt or sugar. Also, stay away from black beans mixed with garlic and onions, as these ingredients are toxic for pets.

While raw black beans have nothing added, you will need to soak them overnight before draining and cooking so they will soften before feeding them to your dog.

It may be best to cook the black beans yourself as then youll know exactly what was used to make them.

Can Dogs Eat Canned Black Beans

Black beans can either be purchased as the dry bean and then cooked or already cooked in cans.

Do not feed your dog dry black beans, or any dry bean! Like humans, dogs cannot digest dry beans.

While canned black beans can be ok to feed to your dog, the caveat is that theyre likely cooked with additional ingredients that may not be safe for dogs to consume.

If you plan to purchase canned black beans to feed your dog, read the label carefully to make sure there are no added ingredients or spices. The same applies to all canned goods, even sardines which are a great healthy addition to your dogs diet.

The other thing to lookout for is added sodium.

Even low sodium canned beans still have somewhere around 130mg of sodium per serving. This is completely unnecessary for your dog.

However, if you rinse canned black beans with added sodium you can reduce the sodium content pretty aggressively at which point a small serving can be safe for your dog.

Its really much better and safer, however, to cook black beans from the dry bean yourself if you plan to use them in your dogs diet.

There are several reasons why wet food is a good choice for many dogs.

First, wet food is typically much more appetizing than kibble to most dogs. It more closely resembles the fresh meat that dogs crave. Wet food is especially good for picky eaters as an alternative or addition to dry food.

Secondly, wet food may be healthier than dry food for the following reasons:

    • Wet food tends to be lower in carbohydrates and higher in protein and fat than dry food. High carbohydrate intake may contribute to obesity in dogs, so some wet food can prevent weight gain and even promote weight loss.
    • Wet food has high water content and can help dogs maintain hydration. This is good for dogs that don’t drink much water, especially during periods of hot weather.
    • Wet food is typically less processed than kibble, which means protein and nutrients are more bioavailable. Kibble goes through a great deal of processing to form it into small crunchy bites.
    • In general, wet food has fewer preservatives than most kibble because it is sealed in small containers. Kibble usually contains many preservatives to keep it fresh in the bag.

Not all wet food varieties are the same be sure to check nutrition information and ingredients on the packaging when shopping for dog food. Ask your veterinarian for input about different diets. Read online reviews to see what other pet owners are saying about different foods.

    • Arthritis

So, how much should you feed your dog to ensure his health?

Wow. Thats a monstrously wide range a 200% variation! Its simply not precise enough.

If you follow that advice youll be guessing. You could be significantly overfeeding or underfeeding your dog.

Misjudging a serving size by even a small amount and then feeding that same amount day-in and day-out multiplies the error. And it could have a devastating effect on your dogs health.

Dont Guess Follow These Three Easy Steps

When deciding how much to feed your dog never guess. Be scientific. Always calculate and measure.

Use our Dog Food Calculator and follow these three simple steps
