The billboards were targeted at pedestrians. When, for instance, someone approached the billboard, a virtual dog came running out alongside them, inviting them to play. A quick search on the Internet reveals lots of opinions aboutwhy Purina Beneful is killing dogs. But why are they doing this? This is aquestion that we will try to answer here.

It is known that research shows that adopting the benefits of vegetarianism increases a dogs life span by ten years or more.

In the early days of vegetarianism it was in many cases fatal for the pets, but the trend has changed drastically in the past few years.

In the United States, the Humane Society of the United Statesand other animal rights group helped to create the incentives that make itprofitable for owners to feed their dogs a vegetarian diet.

And if you go to your local pet store, you can find a number ofoptions that are vegetarian foods. Of course, some dont agree with the HumaneSocietys views on dog nutrition.

And, Purina has not been neutral in their response to the controversy about why Purina Beneful is killing dogs.

When this newspaper published an article about it in the newsletter of the British Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a spokesman for Purina commented, If dogs eat meat, it doesnt mean they must die.

We should be focusing on how we can improve the quality of dog nutrition.

But in the United States and Canada, where dog food is regulated, there are rules and regulations about what can and cannot be put into dog food.

So, what is the point of those rules and regulations? Is it toensure that the benefits animal welfare is maximized?

He says the dogs have shown “consistent symptoms” such as stomach and related internal bleeding, vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, weight loss, seizures, kidney failure and liver malfunction or failure.

In a statement, Purina has insisted “there are no quality issues with Beneful”, adding dog owners could continue feeding it to their pets without concern.

In its statement, the company said: “Like other pet foods, Beneful is occasionally the subject of social media-driven misinformation.”

“On-line postings often contain false, unsupported and misleading allegations that cause undue concern and confusion for our Beneful customers.”

The lawsuit, which asks the court to include other dog owners in the case, asks for unspecified damages and restitution, although it does say the claims exceed $5million.

In a statement to The Independent, Purina said: “We are aware that a class action lawsuit was recently filed against Beneful in the United States. Are Dogs Really Getting Sick Because Of Beneful

Pet food regulation has never been stricter, but a recent class-action lawsuit begs to differ

ByLydia Ramsey | Published Mar 20, 2015 12:15 AM

In February, California resident Frank Lucido filed a class-action lawsuit claiming Beneful, a dog food by Purina, made his dogs sick. In his complaint, he alleges the dry food was the reason his three dogs, which were living in separate houses, all fell ill or, in the case of his 8-year-old English bulldog, died. More than 3,000 other pet owners have joined the lawsuit after liver failure and other intestinal issues arose in their dogs.

In response to the complaint, Beneful said in a statement, We take these allegations very seriously and stand by our product, which is backed by Purinas strict quality controls and comprehensive food safety program.

But Lucido alleges those quality controls arent strict enough. The case provides two potential causes for the dogs illnesses and deaths: propylene glycol and mycotoxins, which Lucido says poisoned the dogs.

People and pets eat every day, says Julie Churchill, a veterinary nutritionist. Whenever something goes awry, its really human nature to look to the food. And thats pretty much all dogs do: eat, sleep and, of course, act adorable. But that doesnt mean the food is actually to blame. Heres why Lucidos case might have more fiction in it than fact.

Lawsuit Claims Purina Pet Food Sickens Kills Dogs

A U.S. pet owner is taking aim at one of the worlds largest dog food companies with a class-action lawsuit, saying its popular kibble is killing family pets.

Frank Lucido claims that thousands of dogs have suffered illnesses or died because of ingredients contained in Purinas Beneful dog food. Hes launched legal action against the Nestle Purina PetCare Company.

Lucido said he fed all three of his dogs Beneful exclusively in late 2014 and within a few months each became sick. His eight-year-old English Bulldog died, something he believes happened because the canine had been eating the food exclusively.

The lawsuit says vet exams revealed internet bleeding and liver malfunctioning consistent with poisoning.

More than 3,000 consumer complaints have been lodged online about pets becoming sick after eating the Beneful kibble, according to Lucidos lawyer, with symptoms ranging from diarrhea and weight loss to liver failure.

At issue are two ingredients: Propylene glycol and mycotoxins. The suit claims mycotoxins are toxins produced by a fungus found in grains, and are a major ingredient in the food.

It says Purina uses Propylene glycol to keep the food moist, but that its more commonly used as an automobile anti-freeze component.

However, on its website, Purina says Propylene glycol is quite different from ethylene glycol, the anti-freeze used in automobiles, adding that the former is approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Verify: Is Beneful Dry Food Harmful To Your Dog

QUESTION:

Is Beneful dry food safe for pet owners to feed their dogs? There are tweets saying a lawsuit claims the food is killing dog.

ANSWER:

We can verify those tweets are false. A judge didnt find evidence to warrant a trial and the FDA investigated and found no evidence the dog food is tainted.

PROCESS:

A little more than two years ago, in February of 2015 , a California man filed a lawsuit against Nestle Purina, the makers of Beneful, after one of his dogs died and two of them got sick.

The lawsuit became a class-action when 26 more pet owners got involved in the suit.

Simply put, their argument was that the dog food had toxins in it. The company strongly denied the allegations and in November of last year, a judge dismissed the lawsuit after ruling that the plaintiffs, the dog owners, didn’t provide enough evidence to move forward with a trial.

Now the class action lawsuit pointed to thousands of complaints filed with the FDA about Beneful dog food between 2012 and 2014.

According to a posting by the FDA in April of last year, a surge in complaints came after a media report on the lawsuit.

The FDA also did an extensive investigation into Beneful dog food and analyzed its contents.

Ultimately, it found no sufficient evidence that Beneful dog food had anything screwy in it that would make your dog sick.

Purina Beneful Dog Food Kills Dogs Class Action Says

Lawsuit claims Beneful dog food killing, hurting pets

Nestle Purina Petcare Company was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging that its Beneful dog food includes toxic substances which are capable of killing dogs.

According to the Beneful class action lawsuit filed in a California federal court by plaintiff Frank Lucido on Feb. 5, Beneful is responsible for making thousands of dogs either seriously ill or causing them to die, which happened to one of his own dogs.

Lucido owned three dogs a German Shepherd, an English Bulldog and a Labrador. He bought a bag of Beneful for the first time in late December 2014 or early January 2015 and each dog began eating Beneful exclusively, the Beneful class action lawsuit explains.

On Jan. 15, the German Shepherd began to lose a large amount of hair and began giving off a unusual odor, which concerned Lucido and his wife, who first started to notice the symptoms. Two days later the German Shepherd became violently ill.

After being examined by a veterinarian, it was determined that the German Shepherd was suffering from internal bleeding in the dogs stomach and the liver was also malfunctioning, which the veterinarian said was consistent with poisoning.

On Jan. 23, Lucidos wife found the English Bulldog dead in their yard. Post-mortem veterinary examination revealed signs of internal bleeding in the dogs stomach and lesions on his liver, much like , the class action lawsuit claims.

The Labrador also became ill and is being tested for similar problems.

More Than 3000 Dog Owners Have Complained

Stacey Cohen

One of Purina’s most popular dog foods, Beneful, is under scrutiny. A class action lawsuit has been filed against Nestle Purina Petcare Company, alleging that some Purina Beneful dog foods include substances capable of killing dogs.

The suit claims that more than 3,000 people have reported that their dogs became seriously ill and some even died as a result from eating Purina Beneful. Pet owners have incurred extensive veterinary bills to have their dogs tested and treated for illnesses.

Purina has defended Beneful against similar complaints in the past.

“We have reviewed our consumer contacts and are confident there are no product quality or safety issues with Beneful, and consumers can continue to feed Beneful with complete confidence,” Beneful spokesman Keith Schopp said in a statement to ConsumerAffairs in 2013. “Purinas quality control procedures are among the strictestif not the strictestin the industry, and our products are formulated by professional pet nutritionists and veterinarians.”

But in a recent ConsumerAffairs review, Melinda of Elyria, Ohio, said her American Bulldog, Diesel, became ill after eating nothing but Beneful.

“The vet did the surgery and found a mass. Said the liver and kidneys were shutting down, and nothing they could do. I took our poor pup home and buried him,” she said. “I said I couldn’t help him, but I will help someone else! I contacted Beneful when I could talk without crying. They said they had no complaints.”
