Who Sells Wild Harvest Dog Food

A General Guideline For Preparing Homemade Dog Food

My Picky Cat Reviews Her New Cat Food (Max Cat & Wild Harvest)

My DIY dog food recipe is more of a general guideline, rather than an exact meal plan that I follow each week. My dogs diet changes the same way ours does, depending on what we do and what we buy or grow.

However, we almost always stay with this basic formula:

  • 50 percent cooked protein
  • 25 percent cooked complex carbohydrates
  • Fats and supplements
  • Eggshells

Protein is always meat and usually chicken, though weve also used turkey, pork, and beef. We feed any and all parts of the animals, but most commonly, we saute chicken breasts or chicken thighs in coconut oil and ground turmeric.

Coconut oil has a host of health benefits for dogs, such as improving the skin and coat, increasing energy, aiding digestion, reducing allergic reactions, promoting wound healing, preventing yeast and fungal infections, and supporting arthritis or ligament problems.

Turmeric has long been studied for its powerful medicinal properties, including its use as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

We add it to the coconut oil since it is fat-soluble, and use it to support our pugs joint health.

Speaking of dark meat, we feed thighs and breasts interchangeably. While well remove the skin from poultry and trim off excessive fat from red meat, we dont worry about buying the leanest meat possible for our dogs.

A little fat is necessary for a well-rounded diet.

They tend to be the leftovers in our produce bin, so we never have to buy, say, a whole head of cauliflower just for the dogs.

How To Cook Perfect Wild Rice

Lets talk about wild rice. Its nutty and earthy, irresistibly chewy-tender, and I cant get enough of it. What is it, exactly? Wild rice is an aquatic grass native to the Great Lakes region of North America.

Dont save your wild rice for your Thanksgiving stuffingits great year-round, but perhaps especially wonderful during the cooler months. Wild rice offers a warm, hearty component that turns fresh greens into a proper meal, and adds texture and heft to soups.

Wild rice is nutritious, too. It offers about fifty percent more fiber and protein than its cousin brown rice, which puts it on par with quinoa. Its a suitable gluten-free substitute for farro, since the two are similar in texture.

Wild rice has one less-than-fortunate quality: Its more expensive than many other whole grains. Wild rice is quite labor-intensive to harvest, which is why its pricy. Shop around and store your rice in a cool, dry location. Read on to learn how to cook your wild rice, plus find ideas to use up every bit of it!

Spectrum Brands / United Pet Group

The company controls over a dozen pet care brands with a global reach. With the addition of Proctor & Gamble and Salix Animal Health, Spectrum achieved a 25 percent jump in sales in 2015, which now approach $1 billion annually.

Other brands included in the Spectrum family are: Dingo, Wild Harvest, One Earth, Ecotrition, Healthy Hide, Digest-eeze, 8 in 1, Birdola, Pro-Sense and Kookamunga to name a few.

Preparation Of Our Homemade Diet

All of the information above might seem intimidating, but I assure you that making the actual meals for our dogs takes no more than 20 minutes of actual hands-on time.

First, we cook our complex carbs, whether theyre grains, legumes, or starchy vegetables.

While that pot is simmering on the stove, we cook the meat in a separate pan in coconut oil and ground turmeric. After its cooled a bit, we add chunks of meat to our food processor and pulse until theyre broken down into 1/2- to 1-inch pieces.

Then, we gather whatever vegetables or fruits we have in the kitchen , chop them up as needed, and toss them into the food processor.

We also add a few clean, crushed eggshells to the mix. A few pulses turns all this food into smaller pieces, making them more digestible for our dogs.

Finally, we add the cooled, cooked carbs to the food processor and do a couple more pulses to combine. Everything should have a finely crumbled texture by this point.

Since dogs have short digestive tracts, its crucial that you break down the food to increase its bioavailability that is, making all the nutrients in those wholesome ingredients more digestible in a dogs system.

I prepare enough food to last my two pugs an entire week. Its unbelievably easy, and I like knowing exactly what goes into their food. Friends will watch us feed our pugs and remark that it looks good enough for them to eat!

Cooking Our Way To A Healthier Dog Diet

Ever since I started raising my own dogs, Id always wanted to make their food at home but thought it would be too expensive or too time consuming, or that they wouldnt get the nutrition they needed.

During the month of Bugs doggy depression, I vowed to make her precious life as comfortable as possible.

Both of my pugs had a range of health issues growing up, which I unfortunately found out were common for the breed.

My older one had persistent hot spots and itchiness that no commercial dog food could cure .

Bug was overweight for a while when she was younger, even though she ate the recommended amount of food for her target weight. Eventually, I settled on Wellness kibbles and they did well with that brand.

But, I wanted to explore other options. I wanted to give them real food fresh, nutritious ingredients that I recognized and could even eat myself.

Ive mentioned in my post on homemade whole grain chicken feed that the entire household all share the same whole grains and seeds that we buy in bulk, as well as the bounty that comes from our edible garden.

Everything our animals eat, we can eat.

When it comes to homemade feed for our laying hens, we stick to a tried-and-true formula that works for every layer: 16 to 17 percent protein , vitamins, minerals, and amino acids from a wide variety of grains and seeds, and free range of a pasture for weeds, greens, and insects.

Dogs, on the other hand, arent bred for a standard function the way chickens are.

Turkey Jerky Dog Treats

There once was a turkey. In my freezer. That came to me freeand was over two years old. I thought about that turkey a LONG time. Thanksgiving came and I bought a fresh Turkey and Brined and roasted it for the family. Im Not feeding an old bird to the family. But Im NOT throwing it out either.

Heres what I did do.

I thawed that old bird out, roasted it in my oven and deboned the carcass. The bones went into my handy dandy instant pot for bone broth. Seriously, if you do not have an instant pot I highly recommend you get one. They are so useful in the kitchen!

I REALLY could not justify eating freezer burned meat. But I noticed both my dogs were GLUED to my side every minute of the roasting and bone broth operation. As I moved around in the kitchen dog noses sniffed. Very hopeful Liquid brown canine eyes were focused on my every gesture. I got the message.

Sherman And Carson. Who can resist em?

How To Cook Wild Rice In The Instant Pot

Raising Rabbits | FOR DOG FOOD

Wild rice cooks up beautifully in an Instant Pot and saves you about 10 to 15 minutes cooking time, realistically. The main advantage to cooking wild rice in the Instant Pot is that you dont need to babysit it in any fashion. This method is courtesy of The Fresh & Healthy Instant Pot Cookbook by Megan Gilmore.

  • Combine 1 cup well-rinsed wild rice and 1 ¼ cups water in the bowl of your Instant Pot.
  • Secure the lid and move the steam release valve to Sealing. Select the Manual/Pressure Cook option and cook on high pressure for 22 minutes.
  • When the cooking cycle is complete, let the pressure naturally release for 10 minutes, then move the steam release valve to Venting to release any remaining pressure.
  • When the floating valve drops, remove the lid and give the rice a stir. Season as desired.

    Horizon Legacy Adult Review

Horizon is another well established Canadian brand that has been in operation for almost fifteen years. Their production facility is in Saskatchewan, and the brand is still family-owned despite its success.

Horizon has several product lines that vary between protein content and whether they are grain-free or grain inclusive. Their Legacy range is the range with the highest proportion of animal-based protein, which is ideal for a dogs diet.

The above adult recipe from the Legacy range focuses on a mix of Chicken and Turkey ingredients, including Chicken, Chicken Meal, Chicken Fat, Turkey Meal, and Salmon Meal. This mix is the source of the exemplary protein proportion. Meat meals such as Chicken Meal and Turkey Meal are extremely dense sources of nutrition as they have had their moisture removed.

As this formula is one of their grain-free recipes, it makes use of legume ingredients like Peas and other minor vegetables. Peas are a staple of the Canadian prairies and can, and likely are sourced locally from their production facility. Legumes, such as Peas, provide carbohydrates and fiber, along with some additional small nutritional value.

Largest Pet Food Manufacturers In The Us

It’s no secret that the pet industry has grown tremendously over the last 10 years. Pet owners are spending more money than ever on their canine companions and dog food is a large part of that expense. The biggest pet food manufacturers in the US are working overtime to meet the demand for pet food that is safe, healthy and affordable.

According to the American Pet Products Association, $66.75 billion was spent on pets in the United States last year. $31+ billion of that was spent on pet food alone ! That means that more than 1/3 of the total amount spent on pets in the United States last year was spent on food for our animal companions.

And that’s just in the U.S! Imagine what those numbers look like for every country in the world. I know I mentioned that these numbers have drastically increased in recent years, but let me put that into perspective for you.

In 2006, Americans spent just $38.5 billion on their pets and in 1996 that number was only $21 billion. If we use 2017 as a guide and estimate that 1/3 of those figures was used to buy pet food, that would mean that $12.8 billion and $7 billion was spent on pet food respectively.

1996 was 21 years ago. That means that in just 21 years, pet owners in the U.S. increased their spending on pet food by more than $21 billion dollars! That’s more than a $1 billion dollar increase each year!

Firstmate Wild Pacific Caught Fish & Oats Formula Review

FirstMate is another family-owned Canadian brand, and its recipes are produced in Surrey, British Columbia. FirstMate employs a Veterinarian and Pet Nutritionist, which is becoming an increasingly important trait for a pet food brand to ensure their foods are best suited for pets needs.

First Mate has a broad mix of grain-free and grain-inclusive recipes to appeal to both sides of the spectrum. They also produce canned recipes and limited ingredient formulas for those with severe allergies or sensitivities.

The above recipe is one of their recipes that is grain-inclusive. It uses a mix of Oatmeal and Brown Rice. These two grain-ingredients are considered to be some of the best that can be used in dog food. This favoritism is as they can offer additional nutrition in the form of fiber and micronutrients that other grains lack.

However, these arent the recipes primary ingredients, but thankfully, fish is. There is an impressive portion of Ocean Fish Meal found in this recipe. While Ocean Fish Meal sounds somewhat vague, it is a mix of ocean-caught fish which are then processed once onshore. This ingredient is a dense source of protein and fat and should not be feared.

You can read more about Ocean Fish Meal in our article Ocean Fish Meal In Dog Food.
