A General Guideline For Preparing Homemade Dog Food

My DIY dog food recipe is more of a general guideline, rather than an exact meal plan that I follow each week. My dogs diet changes the same way ours does, depending on what we do and what we buy or grow.

However, we almost always stay with this basic formula:

• 50 percent cooked protein
• 25 percent cooked complex carbohydrates
• Fats and supplements
• Eggshells

Protein is always meat and usually chicken, though weve also used turkey, pork, and beef. We feed any and all parts of the animals, but most commonly, we saute chicken breasts or chicken thighs in coconut oil and ground turmeric.

Coconut oil has a host of health benefits for dogs, such as improving the skin and coat, increasing energy, aiding digestion, reducing allergic reactions, promoting wound healing, preventing yeast and fungal infections, and supporting arthritis or ligament problems.

Turmeric has long been studied for its powerful medicinal properties, including its use as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

We add it to the coconut oil since it is fat-soluble, and use it to support our pugs joint health.

Speaking of dark meat, we feed thighs and breasts interchangeably. While well remove the skin from poultry and trim off excessive fat from red meat, we dont worry about buying the leanest meat possible for our dogs.

A little fat is necessary for a well-rounded diet.

They tend to be the leftovers in our produce bin, so we never have to buy, say, a whole head of cauliflower just for the dogs.

How To Cook Perfect Wild Rice

Lets talk about wild rice. Its nutty and earthy, irresistibly chewy-tender, and I cant get enough of it. What is it, exactly? Wild rice is an aquatic grass native to the Great Lakes region of North America.

Dont save your wild rice for your Thanksgiving stuffingits great year-round, but perhaps especially wonderful during the cooler months. Wild rice offers a warm, hearty component that turns fresh greens into a proper meal, and adds texture and heft to soups.

Wild rice is nutritious, too. It offers about fifty percent more fiber and protein than its cousin brown rice, which puts it on par with quinoa. Its a suitable gluten-free substitute for farro, since the two are similar in texture.

Wild rice has one less-than-fortunate quality: Its more expensive than many other whole grains. Wild rice is quite labor-intensive to harvest, which is why its pricy. Preparation Of Our Homemade Diet

All of the information above might seem intimidating, but I assure you that making the actual meals for our dogs takes no more than 20 minutes of actual hands-on time.

First, we cook our complex carbs, whether theyre grains, legumes, or starchy vegetables.

While that pot is simmering on the stove, we cook the meat in a separate pan in coconut oil and ground turmeric. After its cooled a bit, we add chunks of meat to our food processor and pulse until theyre broken down into 1/2- to 1-inch pieces.

Then, we gather whatever vegetables or fruits we have in the kitchen , chop them up as needed, and toss them into the food processor.

We also add a few clean, crushed eggshells to the mix. A few pulses turns all this food into smaller pieces, making them more digestible for our dogs.

Finally, we add the cooled, cooked carbs to the food processor and do a couple more pulses to combine. Everything should have a finely crumbled texture by this point.

Since dogs have short digestive tracts, its crucial that you break down the food to increase its bioavailability that is, making all the nutrients in those wholesome ingredients more digestible in a dogs system.

I prepare enough food to last my two pugs an entire week. Its unbelievably easy, and I like knowing exactly what goes into their food. Friends will watch us feed our pugs and remark that it looks good enough for them to eat!

When it comes to homemade feed for our laying hens, we stick to a tried-and-true formula that works for every layer: 16 to 17 percent protein , vitamins, minerals, and amino acids from a wide variety of grains and seeds, and free range of a pasture for weeds, greens, and insects.

Dogs, on the other hand, arent bred for a standard function the way chickens are.

Horizon Legacy Adult Review

Horizon is another well established Canadian brand that has been in operation for almost fifteen years. Their production facility is in Saskatchewan, and the brand is still family-owned despite its success.

Largest Pet Food Manufacturers In The Us

It’s no secret that the pet industry has grown tremendously over the last 10 years. Pet owners are spending more money than ever on their canine companions and dog food is a large part of that expense. The biggest pet food manufacturers in the US are working overtime to meet the demand for pet food that is safe, healthy and affordable.

According to the American Pet Products Association, $66.75 billion was spent on pets in the United States last year. $31+ billion of that was spent on pet food alone ! That means that more than 1/3 of the total amount spent on pets in the United States last year was spent on food for our animal companions.

And that’s just in the U.S! Imagine what those numbers look like for every country in the world. I know I mentioned that these numbers have drastically increased in recent years, but let me put that into perspective for you.

In 2006, Americans spent just $38.5 billion on their pets and in 1996 that number was only $21 billion. If we use 2017 as a guide and estimate that 1/3 of those figures was used to buy pet food, that would mean that $12.8 billion and $7 billion was spent on pet food respectively.

1996 was 21 years ago. That means that in just 21 years, pet owners in the U.S. increased their spending on pet food by more than $21 billion dollars! That’s more than a $1 billion dollar increase each year!

FirstMate is another family-owned Canadian brand, and its recipes are produced in Surrey, British Columbia. FirstMate employs a Veterinarian and Pet Nutritionist, which is becoming an increasingly important trait for a pet food brand to ensure their foods are best suited for pets needs.

First Mate has a broad mix of grain-free and grain-inclusive recipes to appeal to both sides of the spectrum. They also produce canned recipes and limited ingredient formulas for those with severe allergies or sensitivities.

The above recipe is one of their recipes that is grain-inclusive. It uses a mix of Oatmeal and Brown Rice. These two grain-ingredients are considered to be some of the best that can be used in dog food. This favoritism is as they can offer additional nutrition in the form of fiber and micronutrients that other grains lack.

However, these arent the recipes primary ingredients, but thankfully, fish is. There is an impressive portion of Ocean Fish Meal found in this recipe. While Ocean Fish Meal sounds somewhat vague, it is a mix of ocean-caught fish which are then processed once onshore. This ingredient is a dense source of protein and fat and should not be feared.

Multiple Brands Of Dog Food Recalled

INDIANA Multiple dog food brands have been recalled due to possible high levels of a by-product that can be harmful to pets if consumed in large quantities.

According to a release, Sunshine Mills, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of some dog food under the brands of Triumph, Evolve, Wild Harvest, Nurture Farms, Pure Being, and Elm.

The food may contain potentially high levels of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring by-product from the mold Aspergillus flavus that can grow on pet food ingredients such as corn, peanuts, and other grains, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The affected products were distributed in retail stores nationally. Retailers who received the recalled lots have been contacted and asked to pull them from their inventory and shelves. They include the following:

No illnesses have been reported to date, but Sunshine Mills, Inc. chose to issue the recall as a precaution. If any pets show symptoms of illness after consuming the recalled products, they should be seen immediately by a veterinarian.

Symptoms include sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, and diarrhea.

Anyone who purchased the recalled products should stop using them and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Sunshine Mills, Inc. is issuing a voluntary recall of certain products due to potentially elevated levels of Aflatoxin above the acceptable limit. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities. No illnesses have been reported in association with these products to date, and no other Sunshine Mills, Inc. pet food products are affected by this announcement.
