How To Ensure Your Dogs Food Is Safe To Eat

Dozens Of Dog Food Brands Recalled After Euthanasia Drug Foun

Although mistakes happen, there are some easy tips and tricks for you to follow to ensure your dogs food is always safe to eat.

  • Check for Broken Packaging: Before feeding your dog, ensure that the food package has not been penetrated in any way. Broken seals can lead to moisture and contamination.
  • Check for Dampness, Mushiness, and Odor: If your dogs dry food feels damp or mushy, its a good indicator that moisture has reached the food. Moisture causes bacteria to grow, so you mustnt give this food to your dog. Sometimes a foul odor can even be smelt if a dogs food has become moist or contaminated.
  • Expiration Date: Just like when you choose your food, check the expiry date. Please dont give your dog expired food as this can make them sick.

    Pro Pac Performance Puppy

This recipe is designed for puppies from weaning until the 12th month. Its also billed as an excellent feed for pregnant or nursing canines.

We dont find anything wrong with the ingredients because it starts with chicken meal, an animal protein. Ground yellow corn as the second ingredient may be a little bit off, but still not bad. Whats more concerning is the recent recall of this product.

The maker of this recipe is Midwestern Pet Foods, the same manufacturer of Sportsmix, Nunn Better, and Splash Fat Cat.

The company is currently embroiled in one of the worst pet food recalls to date concerning aflatoxin, a possibly fatal type of toxin that was found in Midwestern Pet Foods Sportsmix products.

Included in the recall are two Pro Pac recipes. This particular formulation and the Pro Pac Adult Mini Chunk.

Recall Info: On January 11, 2021, and FDA alert was issued on the Pro Pac Adult Mini Chunk, 40 lb. bags and Pro Pac Performance Puppy, 40 lb. bags manufactured in Midwestern Pet Foodss Oklahoma plant with expiration dates of July 9, 2022 or earlier.

This is an expanded recall that was issued out of caution since the Pro Pac recipes were produced in the same plant as the Sportsmix foods that have caused the deaths of more than 70 dogs and the illness of around 80 at least.

    Problem Ingredients: none

Ol Roy Complete Nutrition Roasted Chicken & Rice

Ol Roys is a Walmart brand that has been in production since 1981. This specific recipe from the brand is crafted for adult canines of all sizes with essential nutrients to provide a balanced diet.

Its billed as an inexpensive pet food due to lack of advertising and promotion, but if you look closely at the ingredients, youll see another reason why.

Well list the first six ingredients here: Ground Whole Grain Corn, Meat and Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Rice Bran, Animal Fat , and Poultry By-Product Meal. And most of these are problematic.

We dont have anything against corn. Grains are okay too. In fact, these are healthy ingredients to have in dog food. But within reasonable quantities and never as the most significant part of a diet. In this recipe, the corn and grains make up the most volume and overwhelm the meat.

Second thing, the meats are all unspecified. Theyre labelled as meat and bone meal and poultry byproduct meal. The labels dont indicate exactly what animal the meat comes from and which parts were used.

Lastly, the food contains artificial colors and artificial preservatives .

Recall Info: There has been no recall yet for this formulation, although the Ol Roy brand has been involved in several recalls since 1998. The most recent one was in 2018 where samples of its Gravy Train line were found to contain traces of sodium pentobarbital.

    The Us Department Of Agriculture

This department is concerned with the approval of the labels on pet foods. On request, the USDA can run a voluntary inspection of pet food manufacturing facilities in order to give some guidelines on how best to make safe pet food.

Guidelines include the quantity of meat necessary for any particular pet food, minimum nutritional requirements as well as information to be included on the label.

If a pet food company chooses to undergo the USDAs voluntary inspection, they get a special seal from the USDA which they include on their food pack. This seal confirms that the USDA has checked their facility and found them to be in compliance with its guidelines.

Studies by the FDA on whether dogs can or cannot have grain in their diet are still ongoing. Hence, theres no final word on whether grains are good for dogs or not. Whatever you do though, observe your dog. If he is allergic to grain, then maybe stop feeding him grain in his diet but consult your vet first. Latest Dog Food Recalls 2020

    01/11/2021

Not only does the FDA put out recalls, but they can also put out warnings for dog food, too. One recent FDA dog food warning came in July of 2018, when they alerted pet parents and veterinarians about the possible tie between grain-free dog foods and heart disease. The FDA has warned that canine grain-free diets containing legumes , lentils, peas or potatoes could cause a specific heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. The FDA had received reports that seemed to indicate this condition had been diagnosed in dog breeds that are not usually affected by this type of heart trouble: whippets, Shih Tzu, bulldog, miniature schnauzers, Labrador retrievers and even some mixed breeds.

Rather than being a recall, the FDA issued the warning as further testing and research are still needed to determine if DCM is actually being caused by grain-free diets for dogs.

As you can see, the FDA has the authority to deliver warnings as well as recalls about pet foods and our pets health.

Its important to note that dog food manufacturers often do a voluntary recall in order to keep from getting the FDA involved. This helps the company avoid some bad press, though of course the news gets out pretty fast anyway.

It just looks better when a company voluntarily chooses to let us know about possible issues with their dog food.

What To Do If Your Dog Food Gets Recalled

If your dogs food gets recalled, the first thing to do is take it away from your dog immediately. Next, you will want to sanitize any surfaces that have come into contact with the food such as, bowls, counters, and measuring cups. This sanitization ensures any bacteria or foreign particles are disposed of immediately. When recalls occur, some companies will provide refunds.

You should call the manufacturer directly for further instructions about obtaining a refund. Often you will be asked to give the product number of the food to ensure it is part of the contaminated batch of products. If your dog food has been recalled and you are worried that your pet may become ill. Keep a small plastic bag of the food in your freezer. This ensures that you can bring the food with you if you need to make a trip to the vet. The vet can then take samples of the food and determine whether it is the culprit for your dogs sickness.

What Brands Of Dog Food Have Not Been Recalled

Top 4 Dog Foods That Have Never Been Recalled

Generally speaking, dog foods that are made in America with American sourced ingredients in small batches tend to be the least likely to have a recall. The larger the companys production, the more likely there is to be an issue.

There are some brands of dog food which have not been recalled, such as:

While a company never having a recall may sound impressive, it does not necessarily mean that there have never been problems with the dog food they produce. A company may advertise that they have never had a recall, however, their products may still have had problems that would have warranted a recall, but they may have been proactive to enough to avoid an official recall being on record.

Keep in mind that this could still be considered good news because they are vigilant and have good quality control measures in place, otherwise the issue would not have been discovered.

A Word About Boutique Dog Foods

If youve been following the news in the world of veterinary medicine, then you probably know about the FDAs concerns with boutique dog foods. The FDA seems to be sensing some kind of link between certain ingredients in these foods and dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs.

Right now, no brands have exactly been named.

Initially, people thought it was just about grain-free diets. However, Lisa Freeman has debunked that in her article on the Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association. According to her, the problem has a much broader scope not limited to grain-free diets, but BEG diets. BEG stands for Boutique companies, Exotic ingredients, or Grain-free diets.

Freeman explains that this link might have developed due to the use of lentils and chickpeas which serve as a replacement for grains in grain-free diets. However, its not limited to lentils and chickpeas. Freeman also writes that exotic meats, fruits, and vegetables might also be culpable.

So, what can a dog owner do?

Well, Freeman advises that you only buy from pet food companies that work with veterinary nutritionists and other such experts.

Researchers still have a lot of work to do by way of research. So, youll be wise to check with your vet if you have any concerns concerning your dogs diet.

by: Jared Weaver, Bill Shannon, Nexstar Media Wire

CHICAGO Multiple dog food brands have been recalled due to possible high levels of a by-product that can be harmful to pets if consumed in large quantities.

According to a release, Sunshine Mills, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of some dog food under the brands Triumph, Evolve, Wild Harvest, Nurture Farms, Pure Being and Elm.

The food may contain potentially high levels of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring by-product from the mold Aspergillus flavus that can grow on pet food ingredients such as corn, peanuts and other grains, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The affected products were distributed in retail stores nationally. Retailers who received the recalled lots have been contacted and asked to pull them from their inventory and shelves. They include the following:

No illnesses have been reported to date, but Sunshine Mills, Inc. chose to issue the recall as a precaution. If any pets show symptoms of illness after consuming the recalled products, they should be seen immediately by a veterinarian.

Symptoms include sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, and diarrhea.
