Ever since I started raising my own dogs, Id always wanted to make their food at home but thought it would be too expensive or too time consuming, or that they wouldnt get the nutrition they needed.

During the month of Bugs doggy depression, I vowed to make her precious life as comfortable as possible.

Both of my pugs had a range of health issues growing up, which I unfortunately found out were common for the breed.

My older one had persistent hot spots and itchiness that no commercial dog food could cure .

Bug was overweight for a while when she was younger, even though she ate the recommended amount of food for her target weight. Eventually, I settled on Wellness kibbles and they did well with that brand.

But, I wanted to explore other options. I wanted to give them real food fresh, nutritious ingredients that I recognized and could even eat myself.

Ive mentioned in my post on homemade whole grain chicken feed that the entire household all share the same whole grains and seeds that we buy in bulk, as well as the bounty that comes from our edible garden.

Everything our animals eat, we can eat.

When it comes to homemade feed for our laying hens, we stick to a tried-and-true formula that works for every layer: 16 to 17 percent protein , vitamins, minerals, and amino acids from a wide variety of grains and seeds, and free range of a pasture for weeds, greens, and insects.

Dogs, on the other hand, arent bred for a standard function the way chickens are.

Which Types Of Dog Is Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Dog Food Best Suited For

Generally, we only recommend this food for dogs that have very sensitive stomachs or need a low-fat diet. This food is far too expensive and low in fat to be suitable for most dogs.

Usually, your average dog would be better suited to a food with more meat and protein.

However, some dogs do have health conditions that require them to eat low-fat food. In this case, you cant get much better than this Royal Canin recipe. It may also be a great option for dogs with sensitive stomachs, since some canines may simply be better off with low-fat food.

Either way, we dont recommend this food for most dogs. Instead, we recommend it for canines that have underlying problems.

This dry dog food from Royal Canin is formulated for small breeds of dogs between the ages of ten months to eight years who weigh between nine and twenty-two pounds. Small dogs can often be picky eaters, so the recipe in this dry dog food uses a blend of tasty flavors to make it more palatable.

EPA and DHA are used in the recipe to keep your small dogs bones and joints healthy, whilst L-carnitine helps support your poochs metabolism so they maintain an ideal weight.

The size of the kibble is small to make it easier for little dogs to chew. The texture of the kibble also helps reduce plaque and tartar build-up on your dogs teeth.

Reviews for this dog food from Royal Canin are mostly positive and a lot of pooches seem to do well on this diet. This dog food is also effective for picky eaters as a lot of dogs enjoy the taste of it!

However, some dog owners found their pooches developed digestive issues when initially switched to this food. To help counteract this, you should make sure you gradually switch your dogs diet by mixing in their old food with their new food for at least seven days. Additionally, the ingredients used in this dry dog food are not as wholesome as other brands.

Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Dog Food Recalls

Royal Canin has been involved in some controversy over the years.

For instance, they were involved in a lawsuit over the deaths of a few dogs due to excess vitamin D. The owners claimed that their food contained too much, but the lawsuit could never prove it.

Eventually, the lawsuit was thrown out because it could not link the deaths of the dogs to the food. However, Royal Canin did issue a statement and recalled some affected products over too much vitamin D in their products.

Technically, this was due to an error at the vitamin supplier not technically Royal Canin. They no longer use this supplier, but it did leave many consumers with a bad taste in their mouths.

There are other controversies surrounding the brand that is technically related to their food, as well. During one lawsuit, it is claimed that they were overcharging their clients for prescription dog food.

Furthermore, their diets are not approved by the FDA as medication, so they should not technically need a prescription, to begin with.

On another occasion, it was found that they were a sponsor of illegal bear-baiting in Ukraine. It was later said that the company was unaware of the events. It may have been the regional representative that sponsored the event without the company knowing.

However, either way, they were the sponsor of a bear-baiting event. Since then, they have partnered with a bear rescue to help ease the suffering of affected bears.

Where Is Royal Canine Gastrointestinal Dry Dog Food Made

Royal Canin owns plants around all of the world. They make all of the dog food they sell in the United States at these plants.

While some of these plants are located in America, specifically Missouri and South Dakota, they own many plants in China. Therefore, the odds of this food being made in China are actually quite high.

We dont know exactly where different foods are made, as the company doesnt release that sort of information.
