Helpful Tips For A Successful Healthy Homemade Puppy Treats

How to Make Puppy Mush Food for 3 Week Old Puppies

Homemade puppy treats need to be made with the right ingredients to avoid feeding your dog with something that can potentially make him ill.

So, to help you, here are a few tips to make these homemade treats successful:

  • Be sure to check the peanut butter ingredients before using them in any recipe. Make sure it does not contain xylitol because it is poisonous for dogs. Preferably, choose an all-natural peanut butter with no sweetener as this is safer for dogs.
  • Use whole wheat flour as this has more nutrients and is more beneficial for dogs. But if you don’t have whole wheat flour, you can substitute it with all-purpose flour.
  • If you want to add spice to your puppy treats, make sure you don’t add nutmeg. Nutmeg is toxic for dogs and should not be present in any recipe, e.g., pumpkin pie spice, as this always contains nutmeg.

How To Bottle Feed Puppies

Whenever possible, puppies should be nursed and raised by their mothers. There are times, however, when bottle feeding puppies becomes necessary . But bottle feeding the wrong thing, the wrong way, the wrong amount or on the wrong schedule can lead to illness or even death. Here is how to bottle feed puppies:

It is usually not necessary to determine exactly how much puppies are eating as long as they gain weight daily and dont act hungry until just before the next feeding is due. Commercially available milk replacers provide puppy feeding charts or guidelines for what a typical puppy might eat over the course of a dayfor example, 2 teaspoons per 4 ounces bodyweight. Follow these closely, as puppies who drink too much at one feeding can develop diarrhea, and if you have any questions or concerns, talk to your veterinarian.

Feeding a Puppy

Prior to the age of four weeks, puppies have no need to drink water. They receive all the hydration they need from mothers milk. Is Homemade Dog Food Good For Dogs

While I am not a vet, and I certainly cant speak for all animals I can tell you that switching to homemade dog food made a world of difference for Rascal. We had a very unique case with him and his food allergies, but we have also seen other positive changes.

Homemade dog food can help prevent ailments such as:

  • Allergies

  • Upset or frequently sensitive stomach

  • Yeast infections

An easy homemade dog food recipe can be the answer to any existing nutritional gaps like low levels of the essential amino acids that come from home cooked proteins or too-small portions of calcium, potassium and magnesium found in mineral-rich, dark leafy vegetables.

On traditional dog food, Rascal was lethargic, he shed in abundance and his appetite was mediocre. Since the dog food switch, he has been energetic, focused and calmer. On a traditional diet we were vacuuming at least once a day but now 1-2 a week. We no longer have to coax Rascal into mealtime and have finally developed a great eating schedule.

Importance Of Knowing The Exact Serving Size

Knowing the exact serving size to feed your puppy can help prevent overfeeding.

Overfeeding can lead to obesity and are linked to various health complications: joint problems, diabetes, heart conditions, and respiratory issues.

Excessive feeding can also lead to vitamin toxicity. Some of the most common vitamin toxicity are:

  • Vitamin Aâ causes bone spurs, lethargy, constipation, stiffness, and limping.
  • Vitamin D â vomiting in blood, seizures, muscle tremors, and abdominal pain.

Also, if you’re not feeding your dog enough nutrients, they can be at risk of nutrient deficiency and lead to malnourishment.

Proper Nutrition For Dogs

German shepherd puppy Diet | 5 month old | N& D dog food | homemade food

Like humans, dogs have nutritional needs that must be met in order for them to thrive. Dogs’ nutritional needs differ from our own, so you can’t exactly start sharing your own dinner with your dog. Feeding an incomplete or imbalanced diet can lead to vitamin and nutrient deficiencies in dogs.

Dogs need enough calories to meet their energy requirements. A dog’s daily caloric need depends on the dog’s life stage and activity level. Your veterinarian can help you determine how many calories your dog needs each day.

A homemade dog diet should contain an appropriate balance of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat. Vitamins and minerals must be added to the food to ensure it is complete and balanced.

  • At least 10% protein, such as chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef
  • Up to 50% carbohydrates, such as rice, pasta, and potatoes
  • About 2.5-4.5% fiber, which can come from vegetables like peas, green beans, and carrots
  • At least 5.5% fat, usually in the form of vegetable oil
  • Vitamin and mineral supplements

If you are ready to get started cooking for your dog, the first step is to talk to your veterinarian. Your vet may have recipes for you to try. Or you may need a referral to a veterinary nutritionist or a vet that focuses on canine nutrition.

How To Make Homemade Dog Food

Some small kitchen appliances and tools are needed to properly make dog food including:

  • Food Processor: Before I start cooking a batch of homemade dog food, I blend up all the vegetables in my food processor. This Cuisinart food processor is my go-to. Its a bit smaller than traditional food processors but works just as well as a larger model. Blending up the veggies nice and fine will speed up the cooking process.
  • Dutch Oven: I make the entire batch in my large Le Creuset round Dutch oven. I love using a Dutch oven because I can ground the meat first, and then finish off the batch right in the same pot. The process is very similar to making chili except for dogs. Ya know Dog Chili.
  • Measuring Cups: Rascal has his own set of measuring cups now because it makes measuring out food ingredients and the finished batch WAY easier.
  • Meal Prep Containers: This is basically meal prepping for your dog, so you will need some great Tupperware. I love using these stainless steal Tupperware bins made just for pups.

Cooked Vs Raw Diets For Puppies

There’s no doubt that home-cooked diets for puppies can be healthy when done correctly, but what about raw food? There is much controversy over raw food for dogs. The AVMA and other agencies warn of the risks of dangerous pathogens in raw pet food. Some other experts see the potential benefits of raw food for healthy adult dogs. However, puppies are a different story. Raw food may contain dangerous pathogens that can lead to illness in people and some dogs.Like children, young animals may not have the immune systems to fight off pathogens found in raw food.

If you feel you can safely handle raw food and you are willing to assume the risks, talk to your veterinarian about transitioning to raw food when your puppy gets older. In the beginning, you might choose to offer a combination of cooked and raw foods to see how it works out.

Raw diets should never be fed to dogs coming into contact with immunocompromised humans. In addition, raw diets are not recommended for dogs with immune system issues.

Golden puppies should eat 3 to 4 times a day. When your puppy is a bit older , you can switch to 2 to 3 meals daily at scheduled intervals.

As explained in our nutritional guidelines above, a Golden Retriever puppys homemade diet should contain a proper balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fat, minerals, water, and vitamins. Be sure to contact your veterinarian about your puppys diet.

But this begs the question: Do puppies need a grain-free puppy food?

Generally speaking, no while grain-free dog food diets are preferable in some specific circumstances , they arent usually necessary.

What Can Puppies Eat

Heres a quick timeline of a puppys nutrition in the first few months of his life.

  • 0-3 Weeks: Puppies should be with their mother and nurse as they please. The mothers milk has the nutrients necessary to provide proper nutrition and protect puppies from diseases. During this time, you dont need to worry about how much to feed puppies because their mother provides them with nutrition.
  • 3-4 Weeks: Puppies will begin developing teeth and will begin weaning off their mothers milk. The puppy caregiver can blend a 50:50 portion of canned wet puppy food with a milk replacer in a flat saucer, gradually reducing the amount of milk replacer until youre only giving them puppy food. One should not be concerned if the puppies dont like the new food right away. It may take a few days to adjust to the new formula. Rubbing fingers in the mixture and then gently on the puppys nose and mouth can make the transition smoother.
  • 4-6 Weeks: By this time, puppies should be fully transitioned to puppy food.
  • 6-12 Months: Gradually begin to switch your puppy to adult food. Small breeds can switch between 7-9 months and larger breeds around the 12-month mark. It doesnt hurt to keep him on puppy food longer than needed to make sure hes getting all the nutrients he needs as a developing dog.
