Would You Rather Feed Your Dog Pedigree Or Purina
Q: Pedigree vs Purina Dog food?I own two dogs, a Yorkie, and an American Staffordshire terrier. Is it better to feed them Pedigree or Purina? They are both a year old and healthy dogs. I am having a hard time finding a food that they like.

I wouldn’t feed my dogs any of those brands, I feed my pups Innova.
Answer by RandyI have an American Staffordshire terrier he is a beautiful dog I used to feed him pedigree for older dogs and he loved it, it kept him healthy an kept him built .. I had to change him to Ole Roy for the last two months and it has taken its tole on his skin an coat now I’ve got him on Purina an gonna try that for a while as my vet told me to put him back on one of the two an just keep him active, that the natural food is great for your animal if u have that kind of funds as my dogs can go thru a 40-pound bag of dog food in no time an yet he is not fat! I wouldn’t recommend that u feed your dog anything lower then Pedigree or Purina as it’s not good for your animal .. just had to put my thoughts in there
Answer by jimmyEither one is fine.Used to feed Diamond until I got a bad batch All the responses about these being inferior to the expensive brands crack me up. These two started the dry food and have been around decades longer than any other brand for a reason. I really like that Pedigree has kibble in it to clean teeth.
Blackwood 1000 Dog Food
Blackwood 1000 dog food has an ingredients list thats full of items that deliver no health benefits to dogs and can even be harmful to their health.
It also contains a lot of ingredients that are comprised of GMOs. Since many studies suggest that GMOs are not safe for human consumption, its certainly not a good idea to fill your dog with such foods daily.
What Is Crude Fat
An ideal balanced diet should have at least 10% fat guaranteed by every pet diet. It is absolutely vital in your dogs’ health to provide them sufficient amount of energy and serve a normal development and function to them. Fats help your dogs give prostaglandins that reduce inflammation and more. Fat content also helps in the absorption of vitamins in the body, which can maintain a healthy and shiny skin coat.

Pedigree Vs Purina: Which Is Better
For me, one of the most important parts of the comparison is comparing products from similar ranges.
The problem is that Pedigree and Purina have fundamentally completely different business policies. While Purina has several premium products, Pedigree is more focused on affordability in addition to quality.
The common meeting points between the two brands are puppy formulas and small breed formulas. I will definitely review and contrast these with each other.
This is followed by the most popular wet foods from the two brands. At the end of each comparison, I will summarize the major differences in a table.

Whats Good About Purina
Theres a lot to love about Purina including its wide range of products, the variety of specialized diets available, and the use of quality ingredients in its higher end formulas.
While Purina was once a fierce rival of Pedigrees on the price front, theyve shied away from this in recent years in favor of following consumer trends towards healthier and more natural foods.
Their ONE and Pro Plan lines are evidence of this move with the recipes across both of these ranges tending to have fewer controversial ingredients and most have real meat as the first ingredient. Theres also a focus on including plenty of fruits and vegetables, which bumps up the vitamin and mineral content.
Purina ONE and Pro Plan are definitely the stars of the show, with advanced recipes that are tailored to an individual dogs specific needs. Youll find a sports blend for high energy dogs and a focus blend for joint and mobility health, but there are also lower cost wet and dry food lines, such as Beneful, if youre on a budget.
The protein to fat ration across all of Purinas products is excellent, with most recipes coming in high in protein and moderate in fat and their lines are all comnplete and nutritionally balanced. Although Purina does use some questionable carbohydrates, many of their formulas heavily favor rice, which is a complex carb thats a great source of energy.

Merrick Real Texas Beef & Sweet Potato Recipe
If you are specifically looking for grain-free canine formula, then you can’t go wrong with this Merrick recipe.
It’s perfect for all breeds, ages, and sizes and is available in a variety of different flavors. We recommend the beef and sweet potato recipe as it is poultry-free .
Containing a whopping 38% protein and 15% fat, Merrick’s philosophy is that these two properties in combination with a host of vitamins and minerals will do wonders for promoting the overall dog’s health.
They are extremely transparent with regards to the ingredient composition, choosing only the best available products and containing no corn, wheat, soy or gluten ingredients.
This helps give us tremendous confidence in recommending the brand. At $60 for a 25-lb bag, this does fall into the premium category.
Whether the exceptional nutritional content is worth the increased price is up to you.

Some Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diet foods may appeal to cats with certain health conditions. Gentle Giants Canine Nutrition Chicken
Gentle Giants have produced a chicken-based dry budget dog food that is packed with vitamins and minerals. It uses twelve whole fruits and vegetables including beets, tomatoes, blueberries, cranberries, spinach, celery, and apples.
This means that your dog will not only be enjoying a flavor sensation, they will also be absorbing Vitamin A, Vitamin B 12, and Vitamin C from natural sources. These aim to foster good immune health in your dog. We are a little disappointed in this formula’s protein and fat content.
Containing only 22% protein, this food falls below the average amount in this price bracket. Still, this will adequately meet the nutritional needs of your dog and support their muscles and bones.
This formula has been designed for dog’s with sensitive stomachs, so it might be a good idea to try this if your pet is having digestive trouble with standard canine food.
Whilst, it isn’t really competitive with premium foods, Gentle Giants will be more than adequate for pet parents on a tight budget.
Original Line Of Diamond Dog Food
The Diamond Pet Food Company is owned and produced by Schell & Kampeter, and comprises three product lines.
The original Diamond line of dog food lacks the desired nutritional content you should be looking for in your dogs food.
A review of several Diamond dog food products reveals the use of corn, soy and wheat ingredients.
Many of the meat-based ingredients come from unnamed sources like fish meal or meat by-products of questionable quality.
They dont use many artificial flavors and colors like other bad dog food brands on this list, so thats a plus.
Still, it would be good to avoid any brand that makes heavy use of wheat, soy and corn.

Kal Kan Complete Adult
This dog food makes the list because of questionable ingredient quality that is not nutritional and is somewhat harmful to dogs.
The primary ingredient is corn, which we just mentioned does not provide the proper nutrition your dog needs.
The second ingredient is meat and bone meal which is a dry product from the mammal tissues, including bones, exclusive of any added hair, blood, hoof, hide trimmings, horn, manure, rumen contents, and stomach.
Meat and bone meal may have a lower digestibility than most of the other meat meals.
Scientists believe that this decreased absorption may be because of the lower essential amino acid and higher ash content in the ingredient.
The meat itself can come from any mixture of cattle, pigs, goats or sheep, making classifying impossible for particular food allergens.
Although meat and bone meals are still considered meat concentrates rich in protein, a generic ingredient like this cannot be considered a quality item.
Kal Kans third ingredient is a soybean meal which a by-product or leftover of soybean oil production more often found in farm animal feed.
Although soybean meal comprises about 48% of protein, this ingredient would be estimated to have a lower biological value than meat.
Inexpensive plant-based ingredients like this can boost the total protein, an element that must be considered while judging the actual meat content of this dog food.
I think you get the point that these types of ingredients are not ideal for your furry friend.
Whats Not So Good About Purina
Purina stands out when it comes to the sheer range of products they offer and their commitment to advancing the world of pet nutrition. But thats not to say this brand is without its limitations.
The sheer variety can actually make choosing a wet or dry food overwhelming, with so many different lines and products. And while the ingredient list may vary, its questionable whether adding in a small amount of one extra vitamin to one formula and not another is really enough to make any real difference to your dogs health.
Like Pedigree, Purina also relies on unnecessary fillers that lower the quality of their products. Wheat and corn are the main culprits, but youll also spot animal by-products in some of their recipes. Theres also added colors and a reliance on refined corn oil, both of which are disappointing to see in the range of this more expensive brand.

Whats Not So Good About Pedigree
While it may be one of the cheaper brands around, we feel that contrary to what they say, Pedigree havent yet mastered the art of blending quality with affordability. Their extensive use of fillers and animal by-products, coupled with the lower nutritional profile definitely earns the brand a black mark against its name.
In order to keep their prices low, Pedigree relies on many ingredients that are known to be controversial, including iron oxide, animal plasma, and meat and poultry by-products, which can include ground up bones and organs. Fillers such as corn, which provide a lot of empty calories, are used to bulk out their products and artificial colors and low quality oils and fats make a regular appearance too.
Pedigree also scores much lower than Purina when it comes to the protein and fat content of both its wet and dry food, averaging around 6% less across the board. Their kibble is comprised of approximately 26% protein and 12% fat, much lower than Purinas 32% and 18% averages. For wet food, the protein content is around 41% and the fat content 22%, again thats well below Purinas which averages 46% and 26% respectively.
Is It Healthier To Feed A Dog Homemade Food Or Kibble
Commercially made kibble is a product with an aggressively long shelf life of approximately 18 months. Heavy processing with chemical additives are used to make low cost ingredients shelf stable.
To make kibble, ingredients are combined and ground. Heat and steam are applied to render, which means the food is cooked until fat and juices are drained off. The remaining paste is forced through an extruder to make pellets which are cooked in an oven. A flavor is sprayed onto the pellets to make it smell attractive to your dog.
If you choose not to cook the protein in Azestfor dog food recipes, follow basic safety precautions for handling raw ingredients. Even if you are serving your dog raw protein, you still need to cook carbohydrates or starches in the recipe to aid your dogs digestion.
If you choose to buy commercially prepared raw dog food, you are likely paying a premium for ingredients that are not human grade and may contain offal . Be aware that some commercial raw food still needs to have vitamins and minerals added to make it complete and balanced.
Cooked Homemade Dog Food
We recommend making your own dog food from scratch and cooking your protein because this eliminates the potential of pathogens. This is especially important if you have elderly or infants in the household who may come in contact with dog bowls or waste.
