Vegetarian Diets For Dogs
Dogs are omnivores, which means they can eat both meat and plant-based foods. It can be a real moral dilemma if you are vegetarian or vegan as what to feed your dog. There are commercial dog foods available that are vegetarian, but if your dog has special requirements then a vegetarian or vegan diet may not be appropriate for them. Its important that no matter what diet you choose, you have your dogs welfare at the heart of your decision. Speak to vet or vet nurse for advice.
Natural Dog Food Is Nutritionally Superior
Sugars and carbohydrates are part of a balanced diet in humans. The question now comes to the source of those sugars and carbohydrates. Is it better to obtain them from processed sources such as junk foods and sodas, or from natural sources such as fruits and vegetables?
Without a doubt the majority of all humans on earth would say that they would rather go for the fruits and vegetables as their source of carbohydrates. So, why would humans assume different when it comes to feeding their canines? Processed dog food, whether dry kibble or canned dog food, is exactly that: processed, unnatural, less wholesome and incomplete.
While there has admittedly been few studies done in terms of coming up the definitive effects of a raw food diet in dogs, comparisons can be made with the effects of such a diet on humans. This is evident in the response of the human gut to such a diet. Gut health and the reduction of its inflammation is a primary effect of adopting a raw-natural food diet.
It has been observed that the consumption of refined sugars, usually originating from processed foods high in trans fats and fructose, increases inflammation in dogs and is a known contributor to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. In contrast, the consumption of omega-3 fats from natural sources such as salmon and sardines, natural fish oils, decreases inflammation in dogs’ gut drastically.

Natural Is Better Than Processed
Look closely at the kibble manufacturing process, but not too close unless you want to lose your appetite. Corn and ground meat comprise the majority of the kibble. What kind of meat and what parts of that meat were used is not always revealed in packaging, nor do manufacturers clearly disclose that information.
The mixture is ground and heated to a high temperature leaving it looking like grey gruel. It is so foul smelling and foul tasting that fat is sprayed onto the food to entice canines to even take a bite of it.
Does this sound like the kind of food you would want your dog to eat?
Brace yourselves, for in one such documented facility, undocumented workers load what is essentially a ten foot deep blender with the maggot strewn carcasses of various animals. These include cow and horse hooves, heads and other parts that cannot be sold in grocery stores, whole dead skunks, dead cats and dogs, rats raccoons and other deceased livestock.
The auger is then activated and the carcasses, maggots and all, are rendered to remove moisture and fat, leaving an unseemly mass of meat. The chef then checks to make sure that the ratio of livestock meat is higher than the rest, because after all, labels only require the manufacturer to declare the dominant animal source. Then the heap is shipped off to be mixed with corn and other grains to be processed into kibble.

Why Does My Dog Act Like Hes Starving All The Time
Your dog may act like its starving all the time because it may truly be hungry. Even though you are feeding your dog a good amount of food, your dog may have poor absorption issues or underlying health problems.
Your ravenous dog may have a condition called polyphagia. This disorder may be a psychological condition or due to an underlying disease. The psychological condition could stem from a learned behavior of always going for food all the time. Symptoms of the disorder include weight gain, weight loss, increased urination, or increased thirst.
Some dogs become extremely hungry in old age, so aging is one common cause of the eating disorder. The onset of diabetes can also cause polyphagia.
If your dog is exhibiting signs of this eating disorder, take it seriously and go to the veterinarian. Your veterinarian can properly diagnose the issue and put your dog on a treatment plan. You may need to switch up your dogs diet or give it oral medication. Like a human diabetic, you will have to give your dog insulin shots if diabetes is an underlying cause.

Why Do Dogs Sniff Their Food
Its not because hes finicky. Sniffing gives him a better taste of whats in the bowl.
As we know, a dogs taste buds are weaker receptors for flavor than ours. But the canine sense of smell more than makes up for that at mealtime.
- A dogs sense of smell is anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 times more powerful than a humans.
- Dogs possess 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses versus the 6 million in a humans.
- The region of the brain dedicated to processing and analyzing scent is 40 times greater in dogs compared to humans.
This powerful little tool means the nose plays a prominent role at mealtime. Dogs rely on scent to gather information about their environment and that includes the kibble you poured into his bowl. Their decision to eat something comes down to whether the scent is tempting to him or whether theres something off that makes him turn up his nose.
Be patient with your dog next time you sit down to your delicious meal of steaks from the grill. The tempting aroma of charred meat is thousands of times more intense for him than it is for you. Thats enough to distract him from focusing on minding his manners.
They Dont Just Taste In Their Mouth
A lot of dogs gulp down their food, barely taking a breath, which leads a lot of people to believe that dogs dont savor the flavors. But these pups actually have taste receptors down their esophageal tracts and even in their stomachs, so theyre still tasting food long after it gets gulp down. We might be jealous.

So Why Is My Dog Throwing Up Undigested Food
At the end of the day, there are many possible reasons why your dog might throw up partially digested or undigested food. They might also regurgitate food that hasnt even had a chance to be digested.
One of the most common causes is gastritis or simple stomach irritation usually caused by your dog eating something they shouldnt but other serious issues could be to blame.
If your dog vomits once, keep a close eye on them to see if anything else happens. If it doesnt, your pup is most likely fine. If you see additional symptoms or unusual behavior, let your veterinarian know.

How Can I Get My Dog To Leave My Food Alone
No matter how much you love your dog, you want to be able to enjoy a meal or a snack in peace. Who wants the smell of a juicy hamburger overridden by your dogs breath right in your face? You may have to learn to wean your dog off of human food by using a couple of tricky methods.
Train your dog to lie down whenever you begin cooking or preparing a meal. Whenever it gets up, keep commanding to lie down. Start rewarding it with a dog treat when it lies down at this time.
Try reducing human food little by little, as you increase the dog food day by day. Canned dog food may be the best way to switch your dog back on to dog food. Canned dog food is harder to differentiate from the mashed meat a human may like.
You may also have to increase your dog food budget and invest in high-quality premium dog food. It is understandably tempting to get the big bag of kibble on sale, but it may not always taste good to your dog.
Try giving your dog enough time to eat its food. Set your dog bowl out at the standard mealtime and wait for your dog to eat it. Just keep up this regular habit until your dog eventually gives in. Avoid giving your dog any human food or human snacks. If you give your dog a treat, make sure it is a specific dog treat not a piece of delicious bacon.

Dogs Like Eating Food High In Sugar And Fat
And some treats are high in sugar and fat. Giving a lot of treats like that to your dog is bad for them.
This applies to humans as well. Its no secret many of us like eating cake, chocolate, and ice-cream. Its because these have a much stronger taste than a regular meal.
This makes them delicious. But unhealthy.
Intermittent Or Supplemental Feeding Only
On the back of a bag of dog treats, you may see this label: The product is intended for intermittent or supplemental use only.
Or something else to that effect.
This label indicates that the product youre feeding your dog is safe to eat as determined by the FDA, but is not sufficient to make up 100% of your dogs diet.
Products with this label are still considered safe but they do not have all of the necessary vitamins and minerals present to sustain her dog 100%.
You may also see this label on some products still sold as dog food.
Some raw foods are labeled this way because they are not processed in a way that AAFCO has teamed safe or wholly nutritional.
Or some dogs have medical conditions that require them to eat certain diets that may not be deemed complete and balanced by AAFCO. For example, some low-protein dog food formulas exist to help prevent the buildup of kidney and bladder stones in dogs.
This food is often prescribed by a veterinarian, but it is labeled as a supplement because it does not have the recommended amount of protein as determined by AAFCO.
If your food has this intermittent or supplementary label on it, you should consult with your vet before you continue allowing it to make up 100% of your dogs food.
But in general, this label is what separates dog food from dog treats.

If youre a homeowner, you could call a contractor to come out and give you suggestions on how to make your floors less slippery. They may suggest sanding and refinishing your hardwood flooring, for instance. This should happen once every few decades, so it could be time to do it.
Sanding and refinishing are ideal for solid wood that has a thick surface, including wood species like oak, maple, or walnut. Aluminum oxide will also protect your floors and is non-slip. It is supposed to last 10-15 years longer than floors with polyurethane, too. Go over all the post-installation flooring options with your contractor and let them know about your dogs slipping problems before deciding how exactly to refinish your floors.
