Overall Is Beyond Dog Food A Good Choice

We were pleasantly surprised by most of the Beyond dog foods, both wet foods and kibbles. Most of the wet foods do contain carrageenan, if this is an issue for you. Many of the kibbles contain canola meal and Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex , which is synthetic Vitamin K. This is a controversial issue for some dog food bloggers but your dog would have to consume enormous quantities of this substance to feel any ill effects. It is approved by the FDA in pet foods. Purina uses it in most of their foods.

Beyond dog food does have a few foods that include large quantities of lentils and we do not recommend them at this time with the FDA investigation into nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy continuing. Otherwise, we think Beyond looks like a very good brand.

Grain Free Duck & Sweet Potato Review

Most cats go crazy over the prospect of wet cat food, and the above Duck recipe from Purina Beyond is likely to have a similar effect.

The recipe uses a mix of Duck, Liver, and Fish as its primary ingredients. This mix of meat and fish ingredients makes up the bulk of the recipe and provides a satisfactory proportion of protein and fat.

Purina Beyond does not use any artificial food coloring dyes. According to our records, none of the 42 Purina Beyond dog foods contain artificial food dyes.

Artificial food coloring dyes are unnecessary and potentially harmful ingredients. In general, we not not recommend feeding any pet foods that contain artificial dyes.

In 2010, the CSPI raised serious concerns regarding the safety of many artificial dyes. Most of the studies referenced by the CSPI involved prolonged or excessive consumption. Since most dogs consume the same foods throughout their lives, concerns raised by the CSPI are alarming to say the least.

Purina Beyond Ingredient Analysis

Many of the Purina Beyond recipes are fairly simple and do not include many ingredients. Often, they only contain a few sources of animal protein followed by a few veggies.

As a grain-free food, this brand seems to focus largely on the use of veggies but this doesnt necessarily mean that it includes more animal meat than other brands.

All formulas we looked at contain whole meat as the first ingredient, with the exact kind used varying from recipe to recipe. Fresh chicken and beef are rather common, but they also have rarer options, like lamb and salmon.

Some of these less common options are perfect for dogs with food allergies, as they are less likely to cause a reaction.

Chicken meal and similar meat meals are also included high on most ingredient lists. This is, simply, concentrated animal meat for example, chicken meal is whole meat, but with much of the moisture removed. Therefore, it is higher in protein than whole meat per ounce.

Pea starch and similar derivatives are used throughout the formulas. Starch is gluten-free and used mostly as a binding product for kibble. Pea starch does provide some energy and caloric content but very little nutritional value.

Canola meal is regularly used throughout Beyond recipes. It is a by-product of canola manufacturing and is very common in feed for farm animals.
