Keep your dog healthy and fit with this easy peasy homemade recipe its cheaper than store-bought and chockfull of fresh veggies!

I never thought I would be one of those dog owners who made homemade human food for their pups. Not in a million years.

But when Butters recently fell sick with an upset stomach, our vet advised us to feed him a bland diet chicken and rice without any kind of seasoning. So thats what we did we poached a chicken, shredded it in a food processor, and mixed in some white rice and fed him this bland diet for 3 days.

Thats when I started to do some research on homemade dog food, and I have been so amazed as to how many different kinds of vegetables dogs can have. And with the help of Balance IT, you can create so many different recipes for your pup!

Now the best part about making homemade dog food just like making anything at home is that you know exactly what is going into the dog bowl, and not any of that questionable gelatinous gunk from the canned food.

But its important to note that dogs have different nutrient requirements than humans for their proportional body size, such as:

  • High-quality protein
  • Fat
  • Calcium
  • Essential fatty acids
  • Now this recipe here has a balance of 50% protein, 25% veggies and 25% grains, but the ratios can easily be adjusted to suit your pups breed and/or needs.

VET APPROVED HOMEMADE HEALTHY DOG FOOD RECIPE | COOKING FOR YOUR DOG | PART 2

This dog food makes the list because of questionable ingredient quality that is not nutritional and is somewhat harmful to dogs.

The primary ingredient is corn, which we just mentioned does not provide the proper nutrition your dog needs.

The second ingredient is meat and bone meal which is a dry product from the mammal tissues, including bones, exclusive of any added hair, blood, hoof, hide trimmings, horn, manure, rumen contents, and stomach.

Meat and bone meal may have a lower digestibility than most of the other meat meals.

Scientists believe that this decreased absorption may be because of the lower essential amino acid and higher ash content in the ingredient.

The meat itself can come from any mixture of cattle, pigs, goats or sheep, making classifying impossible for particular food allergens.

Although meat and bone meals are still considered meat concentrates rich in protein, a generic ingredient like this cannot be considered a quality item.

Kal Kans third ingredient is a soybean meal which a by-product or leftover of soybean oil production more often found in farm animal feed.

Although soybean meal comprises about 48% of protein, this ingredient would be estimated to have a lower biological value than meat.

Inexpensive plant-based ingredients like this can boost the total protein, an element that must be considered while judging the actual meat content of this dog food.

I think you get the point that these types of ingredients are not ideal for your furry friend.

What Makes Just Food For Dogs Stand Out

My dog loves both the Fresh Frozen and Pantry Fresh food. He races to his bowl and licks it clean every time. In fact, that little stinker recently turned up his nose at one of his favorite canned foods something he’s never done before! I can tell that Just Food for Dogs agrees with him by looking at his poops, which are small and formed.

I also love that all the ingredients are inspected and approved by the USDA for human consumption. I also like that the ingredients and nutrition facts for each recipe are printed right on the package. All recipes have been formulated by a team of veterinarians to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance and/or growth. And here’s something big: Just Food For Dogs is the only fresh pet food company that has conducted feeding trials on its recipes.

Things To Look For When Selecting Dog Food For Diarrhea: What Should Dogs Eat For Diarrhea

When your pup has the runs, the best option is to give them a bland, easy-to-digest diet. It should have a high fiber content to help them move things along and bulk up their stools.

It should also have a moderate fat content since high-fat diets can make diarrhea worse.

The food shouldnt have any additives, since these can irritate a dogs tummy.

Probiotics are a good addition since they help restore your dogs intestinal flora. Many commercial dog foods have added probiotics these days.

Boiled chicken and brown rice help alleviate the symptoms of diarrhea because it allows your dogs stomach to settle.

While you wouldnt want to feed them this diet long-term, its great for a short time to aid them in feeling better.

Human Foods to Give Your Dog When They Have Diarrhea or an Upset Stomach

Pet owners always want to know if they can give their dogs human food when their pet isnt feeling well.

While you should avoid giving them too much, you can supplement their diet with some human foods. Of course, white rice or brown rice and boiled chicken meat are fine.

You can also try giving your dog pumpkin, which may aid in easing their stomach.

Mashed potatoes, boiled and mashed carrots, baked and mashed sweet potatoes, boiled eggs, oatmeal, cottage cheese, watermelon, and bananas are also fine.

Try to give them probiotic supplements, as well.

Actress Amanda Seyfried and “Enzo” attend a JustFoodForDogs August 2019 event in Los Angeles.

Flush with $68 million fresh funding, pet food company JustFoodForDogs will expand its retail footprint faster than you can say, No, not on the new carpet!

Previously, we talked about having 500 locations in the next four years. Now we can do that faster, with a broader expansion of our concept, CEO Carey Tischler said in an interview Thursday. We are at over 200 locations now and we will open well over 100 more locations this year alone.

His confidence had to be buoyed by yesterdays news that U.S. pet spending hit a record-breaking high of $95.7 billion in 2019. About $37 billion of that was shelled out for pet food and treats alone, a 7% increase over 2018, according to the American Pet Products Association .

Steve King, CEO of APPA, said consumers are more educated than ever about ingredients that go into pet food and more willing to pay for quality and minimally processed productsa sweet spot for JustFoodForDogs, which uses fresh, whole ingredients that are USDA-certified for human consumption.

That aligns with what our teams experience talking to pet parents every day, Tischler says. They are looking for better nutrition for their pets, the same thing they are looking for, for themselves.

    Best Dry Senior Dog Food

7 Homemade Dog Food Recipes We Won

Senior diets are intended for the unique needs of older dogs. “Senior diets are formulated to target some of the common ailments of older pets, such as joint health, digestive health, immune health, and possibly others,” says Swanson.

These diets may contain higher amounts of protein, higher quality protein to maintain muscle, fiber to aid in fecal elimination, additional antioxidants to limit oxidative stress and aid in immune response, and additional omega-3 fatty acids for cognitive performance.

Since older dogs are often less active, these diets typically contain fewer calories. Some foods are also lower in protein, but contrary to popular belief, healthy senior dogs may actually benefit from more protein than younger adult dogs. If your dog does not have health conditions, look for a senior diet that is lower in fat and calories and contains extra protein the AAFCO minimum protein for adult dogs is 18%.

Our picks for senior dog food are high in protein and include healthy extras to support an aging dog’s health.

    • Peanut butter: Rascal has his own dedicated jar of peanut butter. He loves a traditional kong but you can also mold and freeze peanut butter in any shape for a quick frozen treat. When the jar is almost finished I break out my peanut butter spoon.
    • Greek Yogurt Ice Cream: In the summer we blend up unflavored Greek yogurt, fresh berries, and peanut butter. Place a spoonful or two into a silicone cupcake pan and freeze for a few hours. These make for a great dog ice cream.
    • Dehydrated Sweet Potatoes: Rascals favorite easy treat. We love bringing these over to family and friends houses so Rascal always has a healthy treat on hand.

Company Reputation And Quality Control Issues

Wellness has a very good company reputation. A search of the Internet returned just a few scattered complaints over the years, but nothing that seemed to attract much attention from other customers. They had a canned cat food FDA recall in February 2011 and some of their Super5 Mix kibble, made by Diamond, was recalled in May 2012. We couldnt find any other recalls.

    Bravo Packing Performance Dog

We normally like raw pet food because most of these are free from fillers and the meat included are in their purest forms, free from processing of any kind. However, in the case of Bravo Packings raw diet, wed have to rethink this.

Bravo Packings Performance Dog and all of Bravo Packings other raw diets have undergone a recall this year.

Although no deaths or illnesses have been associated with the food, it is troubling that the brand has once again been involved with a recall.

From 2011 to 2015, Bravo had 7 recalls, which included expanded recalls.

There was another in 2018 and another in 2019 before the one for 2021. All of the past recalls were due to the possible presence of Salmonella or Listeria.

Recall Info: On March 3, 2021, Bravo Packing, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of two of their raw pet food products for possible cross contamination after samples collected during a US Food and Drug Administration inspection tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

The brand expanded the recall on March 16 to include ALL of its pet food and bone products of all sizes. No lot code or date code has been provided for the recent recall so assume, for the safety of your pets, that all are possibly contaminated.
