Simply Nourish Dog Food Review

What Do Veterinary Professionals Think Of Simply Nourish Dog Food

Petsmart Simply Nourish Adult Dog Food Chicken & Brown Rice Review

Simply Nourish is considered a higher quality food in comparison to many other store bought brands. With having multiple diets that cater to different pups and containing nutritional ingredients, Simply Nourish will give your furry friend exactly what they need. Veterinary professionals love any store bought diet that offers a specific formula for multiple types of canine friends. With having a range of diets that cater to sensitive dogs, large breeds, small breeds, puppies and more, this brand is respected in our eyes!

What Is Simply Nourish

This is a very versatile brand of pet food, including both cat food and dog food, and has products that specialize in foods for multiple ages, breeds, conditions, and goals. Since 2011, the product has been exclusively sold by PetSmart in their primary markets of the United States and Canada, as well as a relatively new market in Puerto Rico.

The idea behind Simply Nourish is to provide a simple way for customers to understand what is inside their food. This means that formulae are relatively simple, relying mostly on high-quality proteins, while keeping both the dry kibble and the wet canned food grain free and with as little meat by-products as possible.

Additionally, almost all Simply Nourish products contain essential oils, with some having more luxurious ingredients such as olive oil or even coconut oil. Having these additional substances ensured the health and well-being of the canine, as well as better digestion.

Simply Nourish Dog Food Recall History

When looking at the recall history for a product, you not only want to look at the brand name but also the manufacturer. At the end of the day, it is the production company that will be responsible for the final product and any future recalls it may have.

That being said, to date we have not been able to find any recall information about Simply Nourish or their manufacturer American Nutrition. The private label brand has only been in existence for under a decade, yet American Nutrition has been around for almost four decades. Though we cannot rule out recalls that have not made a public appearance, it is still impressive that they certainly have not had any in the last two to three decades.

Simply Nourish Essentials Canned Cat Food

If you prefer to feed your cat canned food, then the Simply Nourish Essentials Canned Cat Food is a great option. Its made up mostly of chicken, including chicken liver, which is used for all of the additional nutrients it supplies. Because of all these protein sources, this food is almost entirely made of protein and moisture.

Like other Simply Nourish foods, this one has added nutrients such as taurine. It features cuts of meat in gravy, but we noticed that the cuts were too big for many of our cats. As a result, we had to cut them down a bit to make the size more manageable. Still, this recipe offers great nutrition at a reasonable price, which is what were always looking to find.

Simply Nourish Dog Food Review: Is It Worth Spending Money On?

Simply Nourish Original Dry Dog Food is a pet food line with a 3-star rating around 31% of all the pet food we review fall in this tier.

They seem to have nutrition ratio similar to a common pet food, and contain mainly named ingredents. We think they are fine, and might be best to feed with other pet food with higher meat as a whole to balance the diet.

Comparisons To Other Brands

We looked at other brands that are listed side-by-side with Simply Nourish. We wanted to see which ones stand up to the requirements of healthy, no-filler, nutritious, and tasty. We looked at well-known brands like Purina, Blue Buffalo, and 4Health, as well as some others, and narrowed down the list to these three as our competitors look into more closely.

All of these brands are considered premium dog foods, with high quality ingredients and standards, and lots of promise for flavorful, healthy choices. We found that they are all fairly equal in ingredients, though some use more wild ingredients than other. None use fillers, like soy, wheat, or corn, and all come highly recommended by real pet owners.

Carbohydrates: Brown Rice & Oatmeal

Next on the ingredient list are the carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are a sticky subject. You see, dogs dont technically need carbohydrates in their diet at all. They only require protein and fat.

A diet based too heavily on carbohydrates can be dangerous for a dog, and unfortunately many cheap dog food formulas pack their food with carbohydrates because:

  • Carbohydrates are cheap and plentiful
  • Carbohydrates help the food last longer and be more shelf-stable
  • Carbohydrates are needed in order to manufacture the kibble

Many modern kibbles contain 4x more carbohydrates than is estimated to have been in your dogs ancestral diet. Its estimated that past wild canines had a diet containing just 14% carbohydrates, compared drastically to todays doggie diet of 46-74% carbohydrates.

Still, carbohydrates in and of themselves are not bad for dogs its just the excessive amount that can be unhealthy. All good things in moderation, as they say.

As far as carbohydrates go, oatmeal and brown rice are decent quality.

Although some owners prefer feeding their dogs grain-free formulas, most dogs wont suffer and can even benefit from complex carbohydrates in their diet.

The carbohydrates in Simply Nourish are estimated to be at around 45%.

As noted above, thats still quite a bit more than the canine ancestral diet, but as far as kibbles go, 45% is fairly low many kibbles have a much higher carbohydrate percent.

Does your dog eat any of the Simply Nourish products that are included in this dog food recall?

A dog food recall of a number of Simply Nourish products has taken place after a routine nutrition test discovered that they contained dangerous levels of Vitamin D. Even though dogs need Vitamin D as part of their diet, too much of it can lead to a number of serious health issues, such as renal dysfunction.

Its thought that around 51,000 packs, which were sold at select PetSmart stores nationwide, have been affected by the voluntary recall, which was issued by the Wet Noses Dog Treat Company.

The recall includes the following products:

  • Simply Nourish Frozen Beef & Barley 2lb
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Beef & Barley 4.5lb
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Chicken & Veggies 2lb
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Chicken & Veggies 4.5lb
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Pork & Veggies 2lb
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Pork & Veggies 4.5lb
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Turkey & Sweet Potato 2lb
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Turkey & Sweet Potato 4.5lb

But not all of the above products have been affected.

The Best By ranges of the packs included in the recall range from 11/10/2022 – 01/12/2023, except the Pork & Veggies variety, which ranges from 08/26/2022 – 01/13/2023.

Should you have any of these products at home, you are advised to stop feeding it to your pooch and return the item to the store that you bought it from for a full refund.

About Simply Nourish Dog Food

Rachael Ray Nutrish vs Simply Nourish Dog food review

From what we can tell, Simply Nourish debuted for Petsmart around 2011. Petsmart doesnt provide a web site for Simply Nourish or any background history on the brand. We didnt find any verifiable information about Simply Nourish or its history.

According to Petsmart, the first ingredient in their Simply Nourish recipes is carefully sourced meat, poultry, or fish. Other ingredients are ones that you will recognize such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

They state that they dont use any artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or fillers although fillers is always a somewhat subjective term in pet foods. Petsmart also emphasizes that Simply Nourish is natural, though this is a broad term according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration use-term-natural-food-labeling.

We do need to mention that Petsmart and Simply Nourish are facing a class action lawsuit over their claims that their foods are natural. There have been a rash of these lawsuits against pet food companies recently on this subject.

Who Is Simply Nourish

Simply Nourish is a PetSmart brand, and all of their foods are made here in the US. The brands dog, puppy, and cat food are made by American Nutrition and offers a huge selection of almost 40 dry dog kibbles. On average, their dry foods contain relatively high amounts of protein, and are delicious when mixed with their wet toppers and canned entrées. Delicious for our dogs and puppies, that is! When it comes to kibble ingredients, Simply Nourish uses both US and foreign imported ingredients. They are quite reasonably priced in comparison to some other, more established brands, however as our Simply Nourish dog food reviews show, that actually doesnt mean lower quality.

So whats unique about this brand?

What To Look For In Premade Dog Food

As you look for the right brands of dog food to feed your pal, make sure that the ingredients include only wholesome ingredients like vegetables, fruits, and meat, poultry, or fish. Avoid products that use anything labeled as a by-product, anything you cant pronounce in common English, or things listed as artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.Youll also want to look for foods that are lower in sodium, lower in fat, and high in healthy fiber. Omega 3s and 6s are the good kinds of fat your dog needs for healthy eyesight, brain function, and skin, and antioxidants will help his body fight off free radicals that cause damage to cells in the body.

Disadvantages To Simply Nourish

There have been some reports of owners finding maggots or worms in the kibble upon opening. This can happen when a bag is compromised at a manufacturing factory.

While this isnt extremely common, it happens enough that owners should be on the lookout and always examine the kibble prior to letting your dog dig in.

This issue has mostly been reported when purchasing Simply Nourish from 3rd party providers with questionable sellers. To be safe, wed recommend ordering Simply Nourish from Chewy or PetSmart only not Amazon, where some compromised bags have been sent out.

Simply Nourish Limited Ingredient Salmon And Sweet Potato

Here is one of their limited ingredient foods that are intended to help pets with an uneasy stomach or allergies to common proteins. The company claims this line is all natural with added vitamins and minerals to help supplement where the ingredients are lacking.

The food contains only one primary source of protein with no fillers, colors, or preservatives to try and limit the chance that your dog will have a negative reaction to the food.

The salmon and potato recipe was designed to help your dog develop lean muscles, a healthy heart, and easy digestion. The food comes in a 5 lb., 11 lb., or 24 lb. bag and has 44 reviews on PetSmart with 3.1 stars.

Unfortunately, most of the reviews for this product say that the customer loves the quality and usefulness of the food but price increases over time have prevented them from continuing business.

Great Ingredients:

Salmon, Salmon Meal, Dried Sweet Potatoes

Bad Ingredients:

Canola Oil, Tomato Pomace

So far, every food we have looked at from Simply Nourish has an incredibly high protein and fiber content. This food contains around 25% protein and 7.5% fiber. Many of the best pet foods contain around 15% protein so make sure your dog can handle this much protein before switching some dogs develop kidney issues from a high protein diet.

Is Pork Unhealthy For My Puppy

We have heard some owners say that pork is unhealthy for dogs, while others believe its just another novel form of meat. The most important thing to know is that a reasonable amount of properly cooked pork by itself is relatively harmless. As long as you dont add any seasonings , feed your pooch raw pork, or allow him excessive amounts of pork, your puppy will usually be fine. Everything in moderation but obviously, none at all if your dog is allergic!

If youre asking about pork as an ingredient in dog food, weve reviewed several dog and puppy foods with pork as a top or key ingredient before. These have all been AAFCO approved and bone-free, as well as quality assured. If you suspect that your puppy may be reacting negatively to pork, however, head straight to the vet. And one more thing dont give him bacon, that counts as salty pork!

What Other Users Are Saying

You know what we think of Simply Nourish cat food, but our opinions arent the only ones that matter. To make sure were providing you with the complete picture, we read loads of reviews from other real users of this cat food. Were going to share their thoughts with you here, but if you want to read some of these reviews yourself, you can click here to see them.

Since Simply Nourish is only officially sold by PetSmart, we couldnt source any Amazon reviews. But PetSmart happens to own Chewy.com, and we were able to find plenty of opinions there.

Everyone knows that some cats are picky eaters. On Chewy, many parents of these cats seemed to gravitate towards Simply Nourish because their cats would actually eat it. One owner said Weve tried a lot of grain-free products for our cats and always come back to Simply Nourish. It seems to be the one brand that they 1) like and 2) dont throw up or get diarrhea. Another user shared a similar sentiment, saying My cat & my dads cat who winters with us love this food. Its nice to find something my picky eater enjoys that isnt junk.

Simply Nourish Animal Testing

At this time, we have no information on what type of animal testing, if any, that Simply Nourish participates in.

This is largely due to the fact that Simply Nourish is an elusive brand with very limited information available online. Unlike most pet food brands, they do not have a dedicated website.

Simply Nourish likely shares its testing and trial procedures with the other brands produced by Alphia.

Many smaller or private label brands like Simply Nourish avoid disclosing information on their testing and trials as they fear customer backlash.

We strongly believe that laboratory and invasive testing of animals is a cruel and outdated practice and one which should be eliminated.

Which Types Of Cats Might Do Better With A Different Brand

Though Simply Nourish offers many different blends and recipes, they dont offer much in the way of specialty formulas or recipes intended for cats with specific issues. If your cat has special needs, youll likely need to look elsewhere. For instance, cats that require urinary health recipes or blood-sugar control formulas for diabetic cats will need to look at other brands, such as Purina or Iams that both offer such blends.

Here, again, the protein choice is a bit limited however, these recipes are still great options for dogs who have allergies, sensitivities, and other health issues.
