What Dog Food Brands Use Horse Meat

WORST Cat Food Brands â?â (Hint: They’re All the SAME) – Avoid this kibble and feed wet food instead!

The original dog diet consisted of little more than table scraps. Were talkin meat, bones, and whatever else could be scavenged between meals.

This approach to feeding our four-legged friends remained status quo until the first commercially-prepared pet food was formulated. In 1860, English businessman James Spratt created the original dog biscuits using a blend of wheat meal, veggies, beetroot and beef blood. Mmmm beef blood.

Dog biscuits became quite popular , but the real dietary shift came with the introduction of Ken-L-Ration canned dog food in the 1920s.

When Did They Stop Using Horse Meat In Dog Food

In the 1920s, according to Nestle, slaughterhouses opened pet food companies to dispose of horse meat. It remained a major ingredient in pet food until at least the 1940s. Today, Nestle said, most pet food companies do not profess to use horse meat, partially for fear it would discourage people from buying the product.

Is There Horse Meat In Dog Food

Home » Is there horse meat in dog food?

Pet food companies in the United States cannot use horse meatin dog food, according to the Equine Protection Network, which is a group dedicated to making a difference for abused, neglected and slaughter-bound horses.

The main reason dog food companies do not use horses in the U.S. is because U.S. companies make more profit by selling horse meat to countries where people eat the meat.

This does not stop horse meat from making its way back into the United States as unspecific animal by-products, animal meal or animal digest.

Animal digest is the ramains of pretty much any part of any animal from anywhere . Cheaper dog foods contain by-products and animal digest .

The only way to be absolutely sure horse meat is not used in your dogs food is to read the label. Look for dog foods with ingredients like lamb, duck and chicken. The first three ingredients should be specific proteins. Avoid dog foods with unspecific ingredients like animal by-products, animal meal and animal digest.

The reason the horse meat issue came to my attention was because legislators in North Dakota are sponsoring a bill that could lead to the building of the only horse slaughterhouse in the United States.

A North Dakota plant would slaughter horses.

I know this is totally unrelated to dogs, but as an animal lover, the headline Plant may slaughter horses in Saturdays issue of The Forum caught my attention.

Secret Shopper: Is There Horse Meat In My Pet Food

NFM Staff | May 31, 2013

Natural Foods Merchandiser: Ive heard about horse meat in human food. How do I know what meat is in pet food?

Store: Luckily, horse meat in pet food is illegal in the U.S., so you shouldnt have to worry about that. Most dog and cat foods will list exactly what kind of meat is used in the ingredients list. Lets look at one. See, here it says chicken meal and chicken fat. Lets look at a beef option. Yep, this says beef and beef liver.

NFM: OK, but sometimes I see the word byproducts. That sounds kind of gross. Couldnt that mean really anything?

Store: I suppose it could mean anything that has to do with that animal. Oh, and thats another thing: Sometimes when a label says animal byproducts, you dont know what animal youre getting. It still shouldnt be horse, but if you want chicken or lamb or another specific meat, then skip anything that doesnt specify the animal.

NFM: And I can trust what the labels say?

Store: With any of the brands we carry, yes. We do our research to make sure these companies are solid.

Dogs And Cats Are Carnivores

All breeds of dogs are 99.9% genetically equivalent to the grey wolf.1 Even the giant and toy breeds hardly differ internally from the wolf. Domestic cats are strict carnivores, requiring even higher levels of protein than dogs to thrive.

Over thousands of years, dogs evolved from wolves as humans befriended the good-natured pips lingering around their waste piles, camps, and villages. Dogs will scavenge to stay alive and are considered opportunistic carnivores that will eat some vegetation. However, their diet of choice is raw meat and bone, as well as blood, organs, and organ contents of prey animals.

The Timber Wolf Preservation Society in Greendale, Wisconsin feeds its pack an average of 4 to 5 pounds of raw chicken and beef hearts per day, along with donations of kibble on which the wolves are allowed to free feed. They are not vaccinated and are monitored by vets at the UW Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. The average life span of a Timber Wolf Preservation Society animal is 13 to 18 years.

Dogs have not evolved beyond this diet of raw meat and do not have bodies designed to use high levels of carbohydrates for energy over the long term. Carbohydrate overload, along with over-vaccination and cosmetic breeding, seems to be a major precursor to disease in our domestic animal population.

Why Horse Meat Is Not Recommended For Consumption

Horse meat is not recommended as food because of dangerous substances that horses consume before slaughter.

Horses are pets, not food that humans commonly eat.

In the previous generation, horses were really part of peoples diet, but later on, prohibited to be slaughtered and served as food.

They play various significant roles in humans lives, making them one of the most admired animals in history.

Aside from the fact that horses are pets that are not meant to be eaten since some treat them as part of their families, horse meat might bring harm to those who will eat it.

Since horses are not raised as food, they consume various chemicals frequently to help them be stronger, healthier, and be more competent for their tasks.

Unlike other animals that are meant as food, horses are not maintained within specific standards ensuring them to be safe for consumption.

Racehorses are commonly given illegal drugs such as stimulants since they need to be perfectly fit as they join competitions. These drugs have adverse effects on their body, causing them to get ill.

You can never choose the horse meat that you will buy as you will not know whether it comes from a healthy or dying horse.

It is important to take note that slaughtered horses are commonly those tagged as useless. They may be severely injured, deadly sick, blind, abandoned, mares, and foals.

Attitudes Towards Horse Meat

Horse meat is commonly eaten in many countries in Europe and Asia. It is not a generally available food in some English-speaking countries such as the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, Ireland, the United States, and English Canada. It is also taboo in Brazil, Poland, Israel, and among the Romani people and Jewish people the world over. Horse meat is not generally eaten in Spain, except in the north, but the country exports horses both as live animals and as slaughtered meat for the French and Italian markets. Horse meat is consumed in some North American and Latin American countries, but is illegal in some others. The Food Standards Code of Australia and New Zealand definition of ‘meat’ does not include horse. In Tonga, horse meat is eaten nationally, and Tongan emigrants living in the United States, New Zealand, and Australia have retained a taste for it, claiming Christian missionaries originally introduced it to them.

In Islam consuming horse meat is not haram, but merely makrooh, which means it should be avoided, but eating it is not a sin like the eating of pork. The consumption of horse meat has been common in Central Asian societies, past or present, due to the abundance of steppes suitable for raising horses. In North Africa, horse meat has been occasionally consumed, but almost exclusively by the Hanafi Sunnis it has never been eaten in the Maghreb.

It is popular among such historically nomadic peoples as the Tatars, Yakuts, Kyrgyzs, and Kazakhs.

This is a list of famous companies caught selling horse meat for public consumption. While these famous companies that served horse meat to people were not doing so intentionally, it’s becoming a growing concern that meat suppliers are mixing in equine and porcine into supposedly all-beef products. The offending items are mostly frozen food products that so far include meatballs, burgers, kebabs, lasagna, pizza, tortelloni, ravioli, empanadas and meat pies, among other items.

In recent days it’s come to light that certain companies like Burger King and Ikea have been selling products containing horse meat under the label of a 100% beef product. The horse meat scandal started “innocently” enough with some traces of horse and pig meat found in Irish products purporting to be 100% beef, and quickly ballooned into a full-blown horsemeat scandal involving some of the world’s biggest brands.

Why Your Dog Needs Meat

What

First things first contrary to popular belief, dogs arent carnivores. Instead, they are omnivores, which means they can survive on a meat-based, plant-based, or mixed diet. However, meat is an integral component of your dogs overall physical growth.

Image via ScienceNorway

This is because all meats are an excellent source of essential amino acids i.e. proteins. These proteins provide your dog with the energy to go about their day. They are also instrumental in promoting muscle growth. Moreover, proteins are crucial for the development of essential hormones and enzymes that facilitate various physiological functions.

Of course, plant-based ingredients, such as legumes, pulses, and seeds, can also fulfill your dogs daily requirement of proteins. However, these ingredients are alkaline in nature. This, in turn, means they wont help your dog digest tougher substances, including bones.

A meat-based diet, on the other hand, creates an acidic gut environment that is more suitable for digesting bones. Also, it helps kill harmful pathogens and prevent diseases, such as urinary tract infections. The best part is that most dogs love the taste of meat. Thats why a meat-based diet is always more preferable for your dog.

It is, however, essential to select the right type of meat according to your dogs dietary preferences and health. Typically, you can choose from the following meats for your dog:

  • Beef
  • Lamb
  • Horse
