Is Rachael Ray Dog Food Bad

Rachael Ray Nutrish Disadvantages

Lawsuit Filed Against Rachael Ray’s Dog Food Brand, Claiming ‘Potentially Harmful’ Chemical

Although there are so many different dog food brands, none of them is without at least one flaw. The same can be said for Rachael Ray Nutrish.

Disadvantages of Nutrish are:

  • There arent a lot of fruits and vegetables included in Nutrish recipes, but this shouldnt be a huge problem since all essential vitamins and minerals are supplemented
  • Some of the most popular Rachael Ray Nutrish recipes contain filler grains such as corn, ground rice, and other unnecessary carbs. However, the brand also offers grain-free recipes. And certain formulas contain wholesome carbs such as oatmeal, brown rice, and sweet potatoes
  • A few Nutrish recipes contain artificial colors which dont have any nutritional value and are best avoided
  • Supplements such as probiotics, glucosamine, and chondroitin are rarely present in Nutrish recipes and you will have to buy them separately if your dog needs them

Rachael Ray Once Posed For Fhm

In Rachael’s defense, she says that she thought the magazine was a “housewares” publication… So when FHM asked her to pose for a photo spread, Ray said yes.

Rachael laughed, “I didn’t know it was like a sexy magazine,” but she elaborated that she did it to “keep it real.” Sitting next to Jenny McCarthy, Rachael cracked jokes about being the average woman in a photoshoot that portrayed her as anything but.

She did it, she says, because her body type is more of the average woman’s than most models, so she seemed to feel like she owed it to her fans.

Even Jenny told viewers to “go Google it,” while Rachael noted that Jenny’s sister actually did her makeup beforehand.

How Nutrish Was Born

Nutrish hit major supermarkets in 2008. The natural pet food contains no artificial preservatives, flavors, or poultry by-product meal, with formulas influenced by Rays own recipes from her kitchen containing fresh ingredients such as slow-roasted chicken, carrots, field peas, potatoes and apples.

She told The New York Times in 2018 that she had no regrets about going forward with her pet food idea, despite what many were telling her was a very bad idea.

A post shared by Nutrish on Mar 24, 2017 at 10:13am PDT

People were like, you cant put your head on dog food. Thats insane, she said. I was like, Who cares? Its not like I have a stellar reputation as one of the worlds great chefs. . . . My gut is what got us here. I am not going to change what I do or make my decisions any differently.

Nutrishs sales exceeded $200 million in annual sales in 2016, and two years later, Smucker bought the pet food line for nearly $2 billion.

Smucker said at the time of their purchase, Rachael Ray Nutrish brand adds another high-growth, on-trend brand to our pet food portfolio. Their team has done a tremendous job growing this business, building Nutrish into one of the most recognizable premium pet food brands in the United States.

Fda Warns Certain Dry Dog Foods May Be Linked To Canine Heart Disease

The cause of a cardiac issues and a possible link to dry foods remains unknown.

The History of Dogs as Pets

Dog owners are getting a new warning about concerns over pet food that may be linked to deadly congestive heart failure.

The Food and Drug Administration has been investigating a string of reports of some dogs getting the heart condition for a year, and for the first time, they’re releasing the names of some of the brands of dog food that have been most frequently identified in the reports.

The investigation is connected to reports of some dogs and a few cats developing dilated cardiomyopathy after being on a diet of certain dry dog food.

The brands, which are largely dry dog food, have not been recalled, but in their statement released Thursday, the FDA said the agency “has an obligation to be transparent with the pet-owning public regarding the frequency with which certain brands have been reported.”

The FDA notes that the underlying cause of canine DCM remains unknown but is believed to be somewhat related to a dog’s genetics.

“We know it can be devastating to suddenly learn that your previously healthy pet has a potentially life-threatening disease like DCM. Thats why the FDA is committed to continuing our collaborative scientific investigation into the possible link between DCM and certain pet foods,” Steven M. Solomon, the director of the FDAs Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a statement Thursday.

Carbohydrates: Ground Rice + Ground Corn

Ground rice and corn are the two primary carbohydrates included in the Real Chicken & Veggies recipe. Generally speaking, these are regarded as low-quality carbohydrates, and most premium dog foods avoid them.

Note that dogs do not require carbohydrates at all they are only included in dog foods because they are an inexpensive source of calories.

In a perfect world, youd probably feed your dog a diet primarily comprised of proteins and healthy fats. But this would be quite expensive to do several thousand calories of chicken per week would cost a pretty penny.

Ground rice is essentially rice flour, and while it is free of glutens, it doesnt provide a whole lot of nutritional value, aside from the calories it contains. Corn is not a problem for dogs who arent allergic to it, but it is generally avoided by most premium dog food manufacturers.

Real Chicken & Veggies derives about 41% of its calories from carbohydrates. While theres nothing necessarily wrong with this, it is far more than would be ideal.

Rachael Ray Nutrish Dog Food Verdict

The Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food brand is advertised as being super-premium and all-natural, but you cant always believe everything you read from the brands website. There is no doubt that Nutrish contains quality ingredients like real meat and veggies, but I wouldnt go so far as to label it super-premium.

While it is true that Nutrish uses natural ingredients, the quality of those ingredients is questionable, at least, when it comes to certain recipes. For example, ground corn is a common ingredient in several formulas although it doesnt provide any nutritional value to dogs. And it is still included even though almost all pet owners know that pet food manufacturers use corn as a filler to bulk up the calorie count.

The fact that Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food always has a high-quality named meat protein as the main ingredient improves the brands entire standing. Also, a wide variety of different meats present is the feature that sets Nutrish apart from the brands of similar quality.

On the other hand, Im not really impressed with the fats and oils which are used in Nutrish recipes. Almost all recipes feature chicken fat as the main source, with some other fat or oil further down the list to bulk up the fat levels and make the food more appealing. Compared to other premium brands and the types of fat they use, Nutrish is a bit disappointing.

With so many different and nutritious options you will definitely manage to find the food you approve of and your dog likes.

Rachael Ray Nutrish Wet Dog Food Review

Based on its ingredients alone, Rachael Ray Nutrish looks like an average wet product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 41%, a fat level of 23% and estimated carbohydrates of about 28%.

As a group, the brand features an average protein content of 41% and a mean fat level of 23%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 28% for the overall product line.

And a fat-to-protein ratio of about 56%.

Which means this Nutrish product line contains

Near-average protein. Near-average fat. And near-average carbs when compared to other wet dog foods.

When you consider the protein-boosting effect of the pea protein and peas, this looks like the profile of a wet product containing a moderate amount of meat.

Bottom line?

Rachael Ray Nutrish is a moisture-rich dog food using a moderate amount of named meats as its main source of animal protein, thus earning the brand 4 stars.

Highly recommended.

However, those concerned about the presence of menadione in this recipe may wish to ignore our rating and look elsewhere for another product.

Cases like these typically take months or years to work their way through the legal system, usually toward a settlement or dismissal. It will be a while before the time comes for those who may be considered part of the class to submit claims for whatever compensation the court deems just.

But a lot has to happen before we get to that point. For now, its best to stay informed and check back with this page for any updates.

2019 Heart Disease Investigation

We also want to alert readers to the fact that, in late , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration identified Rachael Ray Nutrish as one of 16 pet food brands that may be linked to heart disease in dogs and cats. None of those 16 brands have been recalled as part of the agencys ongoing investigation, though. Most, but not all, of the pet foods are grain-free and/or dry dog food formulations.

The FDA says this is a complex scientific issue that may involve multiple factors, and that it cannot even be certain that diet is a cause of the heart problems.

2018 Class-Action Lawsuit

In August 2018, a consumer filed a $5 million lawsuit against Ainsworth Pet Nutrition.

The lawsuit alleged that Nutrish contains an undisclosed dangerous herbicide called glyphosate, a potent biocide and endocrine disruptor, with detrimental health effects that are still becoming known.

The suit stated, Rachael Ray Nutrish holds itself out to the public as a trusted expert in the sourcing and processing of dog food, adding that the company also knew that contains glyphosate, an unnatural biocide.

Nutrish, on Facebook, responded by saying:

According to Dogs Naturally magazine, glyphosate is a common hidden pet food ingredient.

Rachael Ray Nutrish Wet / Canned Food

Although Rachel Ray Nutrish is primarily a dry-food brand, they do produce six different wet recipes.

You can purchase these recipes individually, but they also come in a 3-flavor variety pack. Note that these foods are all packaged in small, elongated tubs with plastic lids, rather than metal cans.

Wet foods usually have more protein per bite than dry kibbles, and many dogs go crazy for their taste and texture.

Accordingly, wet foods usually cost more than dry foods it can be very expensive to feed a large dog a completely wet diet. You may want to consider feeding your dog a combination of wet and dry foods, to get the best of both worlds.
