Can I Feed My Dog Human Food Instead Of Dog Food

Its extremely unlikely that your dog will get the right balance of nutrients by eating human food, so feeding a 100% human food diet is not recommended. Take it slowly. If your dog is used to a diet of kibble, tipping a plate full of leftovers into his dinner bowl could quickly cause an upset stomach.

Healthy Ways To Treat Your Dog

The best way to treat your dog is by giving them healthy, high-quality dog treats and factoring them into their daily calorie requirements. That doesn’t mean that the foods you eat are totally off-limits to your dog, however. In fact, many human foods are fine for dogs to eat in moderation. Here are some guidelines for giving human food to your dog:

  • Avoid processed and prepared foods: Even meals you cook yourself can contain ingredients that could harm your dog, so stick to single-ingredient treats, such as an unsalted egg, a spoonful of natural, salt-free peanut butter or a bite of fruit or unsalted vegetables.
  • Consider the calories: Before handing over that snack from the table, consider how many calories it is and let that factor into your decision. Your vet should be able to help you understand the recommended daily calories your dog should be getting, so you are aware the impact that a single table scrap will have on your pup’s health.
  • Educate yourself: Learn which foods are toxic to dogs so that you can make sure you never let your dog near them.
  • Don’t feed them from the table or your plate: Instead, give your dog a bite of healthy human food the same way you’d give them any other dog treat as a reward for obedience or for being a good dog. And avoid giving them a treat when they’re begging. It can also be a good idea to put into their regular dog food bowl, so that they understand that they can only get food to eat from their normal bowl.

Can My Dog Eat Human Foods and Making Kibble Better – Can My Dog…? Show – Ep 1

Welcome back to my continuing series on feeding dogs. Part I was an overview of the problem with conventional dried dog food and why you should feed your dog a raw diet. Part II was about some common obstacles to feeding your dog raw.

And today, Part III, Im going to introduce you to my friend Eric Letendre whos going to show you why you should feed your dog human food. Eric is a dog trainer here in western MA and has over 25 years of experience training dogs. Eric has an online dog training business known as The Amazing Dog Training Man and his popular YouTube channel has over 300 videos with over 10 million views.

Hey Eric, thanks for taking some time to share some insights with us today. Real quick, tell us how long youve been a dog trainer and how you got into it.

Sure thing. I took a security job in 1988. They had a canine unit and I wound up doing canine security for 7 years where I learned all about training dogs. I enjoyed it so much that I went to dog training school in Newington, CT to further my education.

I decided to open my own business as a dog trainer in 1995 and then in 2007, in an effort to reach more people, I started my online dog training business, The Amazing Dog Training Man.

OK great. So lets get right to it. How did you learn about nutrition for dogs? And give us your perspective on what dogs should eat and why.

I thought you were going to say that.

Humans and dogs metabolize food in a completely different way. This is the reason why some foods might be deadly and poisonous for your pet but are perfectly fine for humans to eat.

Another problem with table food for dogs is that it reinforces begging behavior. And while you might find it cute, dinner guests may not appreciate your dog hovering over their plates. Your dog might also decide that, since they’re fed from the table, it’s fine to take a bite of food sitting on the table or kitchen counter. Some dogs may even start refusing to eat their own food when they fill up on human food.

Now Lets Break Down The Recipe For My Easy Homemade Dog Food Shall We

The recipe box below contains a printable version of my go-to recipe for homemade dog food, which consist of lean ground sirloin, brown rice, carrots, hard boiled eggs, parsley, and a few tablespoons of oil that is high in Omegas. But sometimes, especially since social distancing, Ive found that it is helpful to have a list of easy substitutes for when ingredients run low. Plug in or swap out any of the items below based on what foods your pup likes/needs and what you have on hand to create your pups ideal dog food flavor profile.

Meat || Lean ground beef, ground chicken, ground white or dark meat turkey, & ground pork are all great options. Just be sure to make sure that any meat you feed your animals is free of seasonings when purchasing! Dogs living with a kidney disease diagnosis need meals that are lower in phosphorus so for us a lean ground beef like ground sirloin is best the way to go!

Eggs || Eggs are one the top 5 allergens for dogs and the yolks are very high in phosphorus -which you want to limit in dogs with kidney disease. But, eggs are also one of the highest quality forms of protein you can feed your pet! Ultimately, a hard boiled egg is Hoochs favorite thing on the planet so, with our vets approval we opted to leave them in his food.

Can Dogs Eat Fruit

Dogs can eat small amounts of fruit, fed as a treat. If youre giving your dog fruit, it is important that you dont feed them the core and pips. The core can be a choking hazard, whereas fruit pips contain cyanide which if fed over time can build up in your pets system and make them feel unwell.

There is a range of fruits that dogs can eat, which includes:

  • Banana
  • Mangos

    Skin and flesh

Although fruit contains vitamin C dogs bodies produce this naturally so they dont need to supplement it within their diet. Fruit should also be fed in moderation as it contains natural sugar. In addition, fruits high in vitamin C like oranges are safe for dogs to eat, but not the peel, as this is toxic to dogs .
