Understanding Pet Food Package Terms
Pet foods are often labeled with eye-catching phrases, like all-natural, organic, or wholesome.
These terms sound similar but can mean quite different things about the product. Some of these terms are regulated by AAFCO and the FDA, while others are not. Its important to know the difference and what these words actually mean.
Here is an abbreviated version of the AAFCO definition that can help guide you, but if you want more information, visit AAFCO Talks Pet Food.

Is Iams A Good Dog Food
We cant recommend Iams as a good dog food. Weve evaluated the ingredients and come to this decision based on the prevalence of corn in the Iams brand food. While they get good marks for having chicken as the number one ingredient, corn is not ideal in a dog food.
Corn is a common filler food that dog food companies like to use in their products because its a cheap source of empty calories. What this means is that your dog is basically eating junk food instead of more nutritious meats and veggies.
Iams Proactive Health ingredient list: Potential problem ingredients in bold Chicken, ground whole grain corn, ground whole grain sorghum, chicken by-product meal, dried beet pulp, natural flavor, chicken fat , dried egg product, potassium chloride, flaxseed, caramel color, salt, l-lysine monohydrochloride, choline chloride, carrots, tomatoes, calcium carbonate, fructooligosaccharides, spinach, green peas, minerals , vitamins , vitamin B12 supplement, niacin, riboflavin supplement , inositol, pyridoxine hydrochloride , vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid), dried brewers yeast, dl-methionine, dried apple pomace, l-carnitine, dried blueberry pomace, mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract
Its the opinion of Beanietoes that a good dog food should be corn free, and we actually prefer grain free foods for our furry staff members. While grains are not always problematic, this particular food contains a high concentration of them, which often leads to obesity in dogs.

How To Pronounce Iams Dog Food
Is Royal Canine Dog Food Good Quality? 3
Have we even heard his name?
Is it like a dog or like a canine?
I don’t usually feed cable, but my 3 favorites are Evo, Origen and Innova.
I use Health Record, NQV sardines. Royal canine is an expensive food, but it doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve never heard anything bad, but nothing good. In the dog food industry, we humans think about quality because that’s where our food comes from. I try to feed my dog according to his needs and wants, ie activity level, coat, age etc.
Every dog is different, Royal Canon may be good for one dog but not for another.
Ounces of your real canyon.
Altigh Royal Canin has updated its ingredients, still not one of the best treatments available. Look at each food label you are considering. Find the 3 meat protein sources in the first 56 ingredients. Stay away from ingredients like corn, corn, wheat, soy and fruits or dyes. I now.
I think it depends on which dog you have. I have a mini doxy and I have been eating Royal Canine for a year and a half without any problems. I don’t know where this person saw it on the recovery list … I check it regularly and never see it.
no!!! This is very weak dog food.

What Should I Feed My Doodle
In the past weve fed our dogs and puppies IAMS because it was widely available and was branded as a premium dog food. That premium branding leads consumers to believe we are feeding our dogs something healthy and nutritious but if we look at the ingredients more closely we see a different story. We see things like animal by products, dyes, additives and preservatives we can barely pronounce in most major pet food brands. Animal byproducts are the parts of the animal deemed unfit for human consumption bones, beaks, feet, meat from diseased animals, contaminated slaughterhouse meatsyou name it and its allowed to be in your dogs food. Chemicals like BHA and BHT are known carcinogens but are added to the food to prolong shelf life to months or even years! Luckily, we discovered there are a couple of smaller companys out there we can trust to have our dogs best interests in mind. We currently use mainly PawTree brand dog foods.
We all know inherently, that proper nutrition is one of the most important factors in our health and longevity. The same is true for our pets. Genetically speaking, our pets are wired to live as long as 20 years but due to improper diets, the current average is closer to 13-15 years. Some say as much as 60% of degenerative disease can be attributed to diet.
The good news is we have found companies we truly believe are different guaranteed fresh foods that are delivered directly to our door, full of high quality ingredients..

Whats The Purpose Of Cellulose In Food/treats For Dogs And Cats
Cellulose is a major part of the cell wall of most plants and can be extracted to be added to pet foods for a number of different reasons.
Cellulose is known as an insoluble fibre as it does not dissolve in water but it is very good at absorbing water. This water absorbing property means that a relatively low level of cellulose in pet food can help to produce well formed stools that are not too moist and loose nor too dry and hard. It can decrease gastrointestinal transit time, indicating increased motility of the digestive tract that keeps food moving along and helps with consistency of feacal volume and frequency of bowel movements.
Cellulose is composed of chains of glucose molecules joined together but dogs and cats do not produce enzymes that can break it down and so it passes through the digestive tract pretty much unchanged. Since cellulose is neither digested nor fermented in the digestive tract of dogs and cats it is essentially calorie free and so adding cellulose can reduce the calorie content of foods which may help with weight control.
Cellulose fibre is thought to help bind the hairs that cats ingest while grooming and help them pass down the digestive tract and out in faeces rather than vomiting up hairballs. A number of studies have shown that cellulose added to cat diets increases the amount of hair in faeces and reduces the number of hairballs as well as associated symptoms such as vomiting, retching and coughing.

Is Cellulose Powder Wood Pulp
News outlets in 2014 were full of headlines about how you might be feeding your family wood pulp.
A scandal about Parmesan cheese brought a little-known filler called cellulose powder into the limelight, and many were quick to point out the fact that its a derivative of plant fibers.
The idea of wood pulp in our Parmesan cheese has been the thing that stuck in the publics mind ever since, and it pops up in various iterations every few years.
Worry not, though: cellulose powder is not shorthand for wood pulp!
Powdered cellulose is a derivative of any plant you can imagine, from trees to grains to fruits and vegetables.
Its the stuff that gives structure to cell walls and limits plant growth. Youre just as likely to be consuming cellulose powder from leftover apples and potatoes as you are from the crates that carry them.
Theres no difference in the end product, no matter what it comes from.
Sensationalized news outlets aside, cellulose powder is a great thickening agent, emulsifier, and anti-caking agent.
Why Beet Pulp Is Good For Dogs
Unlike larger-breed dogs that are considered mature at age 5, medium-breed dogs are usually called mature or senior at age 7. By this time, their nutritional requirements are changing. You can help keep your medium-breed dog active, happy and healthy with a specially formulated mature or senior diet that delivers highly digestible, enhanced nutrition.
Beet pulp is an important source of fiber that is good for helping your dog maintain intestinal health and can enhance his ability to absorb ingredients. Beet pulp is the material that remains after sugar is extracted from sugar beets.

Quality Dog Food Checklist: The Must
Whether you are searching for a food that addresses a specific nutritional need or you are just looking for a good all-around option, you should always be sure to provide your dog with a high-quality food.
Generally speaking, this means you want to look keep the following things in mind:
Opt for foods that list a whole protein as the first ingredient. Dogs are omnivores, who remain healthiest on a diet containing a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, but the bulk of their calories should come from protein sources. Dogs are not obligate carnivores in the sense that cats or rattlesnakes are, but they should still be provided with a meat-based diet.
Avoid foods with unidentified meat meals or byproducts. There is nothing inherently wrong with meat meals or byproducts in fact, many contain a wealth of nutritional value. Your dog will actually enjoy health benefits from eating the cartilage, connective tissues, livers, gizzards and other organs that makeup meat meals and byproducts . While beneficial, these food items must always be identified by a single species. In other words, you must avoid things like meat meal and poultry byproducts, but foods with duck meal or pork byproducts are perfectly acceptable.

Complaints About Iams Dog Food
Iams was acquired by Proctor& Gamble, and since then, some pet parents have complained that the ingredients and formulas of the Iams foods have been changed. This switch has seen potentially lower value ingredients and less healthy recipes.
They also apparently did a bit of a bait and switch a couple years back that left many pet parents upset. Their lamb formula briefly featured chicken as the first ingredient rather than lamb as it did previously. However, it seems that they have changed it back after many complaints from dog owners who did not appreciate the deception.
Still, its something that you may want to look out for in the future, particularly if your dog is prone to allergies, upset stomach or diarrhea. Its possible that they may try to change formulas again.
In closing, Iams is at best, a mediocre dog food. They arent the worst on the market, but they certainly arent the best either. The high carbohydrate and fat content in this food is not ideal, and it could lead to health problems down the road for your dog, particularly if they are a senior pup or not very active.
They also use some questionable ingredients that we just wont feed our fur babies, namely the corn and the chicken by-products, which seem to make up a large portion of all of their recipes.
