When To Start Feeding Raw Food To Puppies

Raw Feeding – How much do I feed my dog?
  • Best to keep puppies on mothers milk as long as possible.
  • 4-5 weeks old: Usually on milk till 4-5 weeks old when teeth come in. Then can add food for puppies.
  • Mom might regurgitate food for puppies this is great as its predigested food.
  • 4-5 weeks old: When adding food use mushy food and minced food and add broth or water to it.
  • 6 weeks old: Can add small meaty bones like chicken necks. But youll want to help them out with some predigestion of your own so pound the necks up with a hammer or meat tenderizer to make them easier to eat.
  • 6 7 weeks: Most puppies are eating what mom is eating only in smaller amounts.
  • Puppies might need more calcium so give 15% bone
  • Make sure diet is high quality. Not more than 10% fat or there wont be enough proteins and nutrients in the diet.

Why Is My Dog Drinking Less Water Daily Should I Be Concerned

No, there is absolutely no reason to be concerned. Unlike kibble, raw food is full of naturally occurring water. Kibble takes a lot of water to re-hydrate whereas all the moisture needed to digest raw food is contained within it. Having said that, always ensure that your dog has an adequate supply of fresh water available.

Bring Back Your Dog’s Natural Luster

Everything in your dog’s body is connected in some way or another. Your dog’s skin and coat are affected by how all the rest of its systems function. Poor digestion or absorption of nutrients can affect cell cycles, how the body uses nutrients, and, eventually, their skin and coat health.

Dry skin, excessive shedding, itchiness, and inflammation can all be caused by a lack of or improper balance of nutrients in your dog’s diet. A raw diet provides the most natural sources of these essential nutrients in a form that is easy for your dog’s body to recognize and use.

Another important factor in skin and coat health is hydration. Dogs that do not eat a moisture-rich diet will end up losing that moisture through bowel movements. Dehydration negatively affects your dog’s skin by limiting natural oil production that supports the life cycle and quality of your dog’s skin cells and fur.

Feeding a high moisture diet will not deter your dog from its natural drinking habits. However, it will help improve digestion, keep them better hydrated, and flush toxins and bacteria out of their system.

For many pet owners, shedding is a constant issue. A reduction in shedding is one of the first benefits you will see when switching to raw feeding. In combination with a regular brushing routine, you can significantly cut down on shedding and dander in your home.

Raw Dog Food How Much Should I Feed

There are so many opinions on this as you will notice if you ever go searching Google, however as a general rule of thumb with all my dogs they are regularly fed about 2% of their HEALTHY body weight.

Obviously the amount fed also will depend on the dogs energy and activity levels

  • If your dog is a little on the chunky side and needs to lose a few extra kilos then I would be feeding them no more than 2% of their current body weight.
  • For the average activity levels I.e a daily walk of no less than 30 minutes, 3% is generally more than enough.
  • If your dog is a little underweight or has high activity levels I would recommend aiming for 4%
  • If you have working dogs with extremely high activity levels or someone who is regularly jogging/cycling etc with your dog then I would aim for up to 6% of body weight per day.

Finding Your Dogs Ideal Weight

Raw feeding Dogs

Sometimes it takes more than just looking at your pet to determine their ideal weight. Many long haired and double coated breeds can be harder to gauge by just looking at them. Breeds differ in shape and build, so that can complicate things when you are trying to figure out their weight.

We encourage you to feel them to best determine their physique. Besides, its another great reason to pet your dog!

You can determine whether your dog is overweight by using your fist as a guideline.

Feel your dogs ribs and compare it to your fist. If your dogs ribs feel like the spot between your palm and your thumb, he is overweight. If his ribs feel like the area of your knuckles, he is underweight. His ideal weight should have his ribs feeling like the back of your hand.

How Much Raw Food Does A Puppy Need

Figuring out how much food to feed your puppy can be tricky. Despite their small size, young dogs will need a significant amount of food to stay healthy.

Furthermore, their tiny bodies will need refueling much more often to keep up with the development cycle.

To many, the first thought is to just provide an endless supply of food. Commonly referred to as free feeding, this method ensures that puppies always have access to food whenever they need it.

While this may work for some dogs, the idea is generally not recommended. Puppies can gain weight quite easily. They do self-regulate their consumption to some extent, but weight gain is a very real threat.

The nature of raw food is another thing to consider. Raw food can become contaminated the longer its left out. This can put your new puppy at risk for a wide variety of bacterial infections and diseases. So how do you go about planning their meals?

What Factors Affect How Much Raw Food To Feed Your Dog

There are certain factors to determine the amount of raw food to feed your dog. They include the following:

  • Bodyweight weigh your dog to know their current weight then calculate the amount of food they need by multiplying by 2-5%.
  • Activity level take into consideration the level of activity your dog is getting daily to determine the amount of food they need. Is your dog working, active, inactive, or is their activity level is average? Adjust the amount basing on these elements.
  • Adjust for weight gain or loss if your dogs current weight is not ideal for their age, you can adjust the amount of their food to ensure that they get to their ideal weight. Use your dogs body condition score to determine whether they are emaciated, thin, heavy, or obese.
  • Life stages puppies need more food than adult dogs because they need more fuel for their rapidly growing bodies. But you also need to consider their body condition to calculate the food they need. Pregnant dogs need 4-5% of their body weight and senior dogs who are less active need less food.
  • Consider the size toy and small breeds need more of their body weight and larger breeds.

I never thought I would be one of those dog owners who made homemade human food for their pups. Not in a million years.

But when Butters recently fell sick with an upset stomach, our vet advised us to feed him a bland diet chicken and rice without any kind of seasoning. So thats what we did we poached a chicken, shredded it in a food processor, and mixed in some white rice and fed him this bland diet for 3 days.

Thats when I started to do some research on homemade dog food, and I have been so amazed as to how many different kinds of vegetables dogs can have. And with the help of Balance IT, you can create so many different recipes for your pup!

Now the best part about making homemade dog food just like making anything at home is that you know exactly what is going into the dog bowl, and not any of that questionable gelatinous gunk from the canned food.

But its important to note that dogs have different nutrient requirements than humans for their proportional body size, such as:

  • High-quality protein
  • Fat

  • Now this recipe here has a balance of 50% protein, 25% veggies and 25% grains, but the ratios can easily be adjusted to suit your pups breed and/or needs.

Raw Dog Food Diet: Concerns Overblown

Supporters of raw dog food diets are quick to point out that commercially processed pet foods can contain harmful bacteria, as can raw meat offered for human consumption.

The whole concern about bad bacteria is overblown, Knueven says. When people are feeding a raw diet they know its not sterile, and theyre more careful about washing their hands. Feeding a raw meat diet is no different than cooking chicken for the family … you have to clean up the counter and your knife.

    Continued

The FDA guidance document also suggested that manufacturers address typical nutrition problems in a raw-meat diet, including making sure it contained enough calcium and phosphorous, important for bone health. Raw-meat diets high in liver also may supply too much vitamin A, which can lead to vitamin A toxicity if fed for an extended period.

Even veterinarians like Knueven who support raw dog food diets say that theyre not appropriate for all dogs. Because the diets are typically high in protein, they arent appropriate for dogs with late-stage kidney or severe liver failure.

He recommends that dogs with pancreatitis or other digestive issues start with a cooked, homemade diet and clear up problems before switching to raw. Dogs with cancer, on chemotherapy, or dogs with other immunosuppressive diseases also should not eat raw food. And puppies arent good candidates, either.

The End Result Of Quality Depends On You

A lot of dog owners fail to make properly nutritious homemade raw dog food meals for their pets.

This is often because they are misinformed or mislead by websites and so-called dog food specialists that dont know what they are talking about. It’s a very dangerous practice.

A few years ago the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association examined 200 homemade dog food recipes from websites and veterinarians alike.

Of the 200 recipes, only 9 matched the NRCs requirements for a high-quality dog food. You can find most of their studies online in AVMA library. Here’s a 2013 Stockman et al. study and here’s a 2012 Larsen et al. study.

Official Conclusion: Many problems with nutritional adequacy were detected, and use of the recipes could result in highly variable and often inappropriate diets. Many recipes would not meet nutritional and clinical needs of individual patients and should be used cautiously for long-term feeding.

The general consensus among veterinarians is that they are usually not supportive of raw feeding dogs, mostly because they do not trust pet owners to make the right choices.

    Disinfect The Natural Way

Bowls should be cleaned after every meal, counters and utensils should be sanitized, and any surface or container that touches the food should be disinfected. Disinfecting makes us think of chemicals, but there are natural, pet-safe solutions to eliminate bacteria.

Vinegar is nature’s secret disinfectant. Use vinegar to clean surfaces, floors, bowls, and anything else used in raw feeding. Don’t use full-strength vinegar, as that would be overpowering. Instead, use a vinegar and water dilution. 10-15% vinegar to water is suitable for cleaning, and the smell will dissipate quickly.
