Raw feeding is quite a big topic. It is both complicated and simple. Complicated because we tend to worry about the nutrients our dogs are getting. And we cant see a list of ingredients on a meaty bone. But the truth is, we dont need to.

Raw feeding is not as convenient as kibble feeding, It requires plenty of freezer and refrigeration space, a designated preparation surface*, and good meat preparation hygiene. .

Small puppies are growing fast and are vulnerable to diets with a poor nutrient balance. It is very important you do your research before attempting to raw feed a small puppy.

As a brief summary, the primary well documented benefits of raw feeding are great dental health , small quantities of virtually odourless poop, and a diet free from grains.

Raw feeding also provides a huge amount of pleasure for dogs. Pleasure that is hard to quantify, but youll know it when you see it! You can read more about the pros and cons of raw feeding on our The Happy Puppy site

feeding guidelines on dog food packaging are extremely useful but should serve as a starting point only when assessing the right amount of food in your dogs daily diet.

Working dogs will need more food for the energy that they will expend in the course of the day but a dog that lays around the house all day and doesnt get any exercise will not need to eat the same portions of food.

You should weigh your dog on a regular basis and see whether it is gaining or losing weight and adjust the amount of food it is eating accordingly.

You know, its quite incredible the amount of people who have literally no idea how much their dog weighs or indeed any idea of how much they should weigh. Simply getting to grips with this information can literally extend your dogs life, in some cases for a considerable amount of time.

Many experts argue that there has been a general decline in the general health of dogs that correlates with the widespread introduction of certain types of processed dog foods.

What Is It So Important To Get The Amount Right

It can be hard to gauge how much homemade dog food you should be giving your pup. After all, all store-bought wet and dry foods give you serving size guidelines complete with your pups weight and age. So, why cant you just do a little experimenting and figure out your dogs diet for yourself? See whether your pup is gaining or losing weight and adjust accordingly? There are supposedly reputable online sources that encourage you to do this to find your pups ideal serving size. To put it simply, this is something that you just should not do. Fooling around with your dogs weight is a definite no-no and can quickly lead to health and nutritional problems. You do not want to put your dogs health in danger by allowing them to become obese for any period of time as this could allow them to develop serious and sometimes irreversible health conditions. It is also possible that they could be consuming too many nutrients which is also dangerous for their health as they could develop nutrient toxicity. Nutrient deficiency can be just as dangerous, as being vitamin and nutrient deficient can lead to weakness and failing organs. In conclusion, dont be messing with your dogs portion control.

Switching From Border Collie Puppy Food To Adult Food

You might wonder when it is time to switch from puppy food to adult food for your Border Collie.

Border Collies become adult dogs by the time they turn one year old. This is the time when owners usually start their 12-month-old puppies on dog food for adult dogs.

But dont do this in one go. Transition your dog to his new food over time. Initially, give him roughly ¾ portion of his old foodand ¼ portion of new food.

Do that for a day or two and watch your dogs reaction. If he eats it all up, you can give him half/half for a day or two. If hes doing well at this point you can start giving him his new food exclusively.

Keep in mind that if your puppy is underweight, you might want to continue him on his puppy food until hes in a better condition. Remember, some dogs grow slower.

Th Week Of Pregnancy To Birth

During the last third of pregnancy the puppies are growing very quickly, roughly doubling in size each week. This puts enormous demands on the mother, and her diet will have to be bolstered to compensate.

Although extra food would do the job, the mother’s stomach capacity will be significantly reduced due to the presence of the puppies, so it is much better to continue to feed the same amount but switch to a higher energy food. Some companies produce specific foods for pregnant and nursing bitches, but any puppy food or high energy diet would be just as effective. As her stomach volume continues to decrease, it is often wise to feed the mother several, smaller meals per day for the last 1-2 weeks of pregnancy .

Benefits Of Dry Dog Food Compared To Wet Dog Food

Dry dog food, or kibble, often offers certain benefits that wet food doesnt provide, such as:

  • Dental health benefits: Dry food encourages dogs to chew their food, which aids in preventing tartar buildup and secondary periodontal disease.

  • Convenience: Compared to wet food, dry diets are much easier to pre-portion, and they wont spoil if left out all day. This can be beneficial for dogs that are grazers.

  • Financially feasible: Depending on the brand of food, dry diets may be less expensive to purchase and store long-term.

  • Food enrichment: Kibble is easier to integrate into food puzzles and slow feeders that may improve a dogs quality of life through cognitive stimulation.

How Many Treats To Give Your Chihuahua

Its incredibly difficult to resist those big hungry, begging eyes on your Chihuahua. Their manipulative tendencies get the best of people, but its really important that you dont often give in.

Everyone in your house should be agreement with how many treats your Chihuahua gets a day. We recommend using your Chihuahuas food as a way to give treats too!

Treats should be reserved for rewards during training sessions or when your Chihuahua is on an outing getting some valuable socialization.

When you reward your Chihuahua for training or good behavior, you need to remember that you did so when it comes to meal time. Again, as a tip, you can always use your Chihuahuas food for training! This really helps keep the calories to the correct amount each day.

Its also a good idea to get your entire household on the same page when it comes to giving your Chihuahua table scraps and other delicious snacks as those are valuable treats and would best be used for training.

If someone in your home is offering your Chihuahua extra treats behind your back, your puppy may end up gaining weight without you realizing why.

Dont forget, Chihuahuas are pros at begging, and they will try to convince everyone that they are absolutely starving.

Youll need to subtract treat calories from your Chihuahuas daily calorie maximum each day in order to keep them at a healthy weight. In other words, the more treats your Chihuahua gets through the day, the less food they should get at meal time.

Chart Your Puppys Weight And Growth

  • Weighing a dog, even a squirming puppy, is easy. Just weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the puppy. Subtract the differencethats the puppys weight. Voila!
  • Dont worry about an ounce or two either way no two dogs, even within breeds, are built exactly alike.
  • A young dog carrying too much weight has an increased risk of orthopedic problems, due to stress on immature joints. Obesity can also lead to diabetes, diseases of the heart and other organs, and general lethargy.

How Often To Feed Your Pup

Feeding Suggestion for Dogs Lake Erie Pet Food Co.

Puppies should be fed three to four times a day therefore if you are currently feeding ¾ a cup of puppy food twice a day you should consider spacing it out by feeding ½ cup three times a day.

Smaller meals are easier to digest for the puppy and energy levels dont peak and fall so much with frequent meals. At around six months you may start feeding twice a day for convenience but because your dog is a mixed large breed dog I would recommend sticking with a 3-4 times a day feeding schedule if possible to minimize the risk of gastric dilatation volvulus.
