7 Week Old Puppy Food

When Should A Puppy Start Eating Solid Food

7 Week Old GSP Puppies – Crate Training and Food Change

Puppies should get solid food starting at about four weeks, when theyâre not able to get all the calories they need from their motherâs milk. Most puppies are weaned by six weeks.

Joseph Wakshlag, DVM, PhD, is assistant professor of clinical nutrition at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. He says that for puppies younger than 8 weeks, you may need to moisten dry food until it feels spongy.

What About Dog Food Marketed For All Life Stages

Some dog food manufacturers try to fish with a big net, and market foods designed to be suitable for puppies and adults.

To do so in accordance with the AAFCOs labelling requirements, such foods need only demonstrate that they meet the nutritional requirements for puppies and adults.

But because the nutritional requirements of foods designed for growing dogs exceed those required for adults, these foods are essentially puppy food.

It is therefore perfectly acceptable to offer all life stages foods to young puppies.

However, problems with such foods may manifest in adult dogs, who may not need the higher protein and fat content that characterizes puppy foods.

Some adult dogs particularly those with high caloric needs may be able to tolerate such rich food on a daily basis, but others will become overweight, and subject to joint problems and other ailments.

Why Do Puppies Refuse To Eat

Anorexiaor loss of appetitemay be abrupt, with your pup suddenly refusing to eat, or gradual, so that it’s eating less over time. A number of factors can contribute to your puppy’s anorexia.

Young puppies have smaller fat reserves than adult dogs and cant go without food longer than about 12 hours before needing medical help. Toy breed puppies are particularly prone to potentially deadly drops in blood sugar if they skip a meal.

Can You Use A Homemade Puppy Food For Your New Pet

A lot of owners consider making a homemade puppy food for their new pet. Its certainly possible to do so, but its generally not a good idea.

Creating a homemade food for adult dogs is tricky at best, and it requires a lot more research and expertise than the average owner is willing or able to invest.

And because a puppys nutritional needs are even more challenging to satisfy than those of adults, its wiser to simply rely on a commercially prepared diet that is specifically designed to meet the needs of growing puppies.

If you have your heart set on feeding your pet a homemade food, just wait until your little floof has reached adulthood .

Start by asking your veterinarian what they recommend, says C.A. Tony Buffington, DVM, PhD. Buffington is a professor of veterinary clinical sciences at The Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital. âIn the first six months or so, the nutrient needs are changing very quickly. And, they leave the least margin for error.â So asking your vet is a good idea since veterinarians typically recommend diets theyâve had the most experience with.

Move On From Puppy Food

Puppy food is very high in calories and nutritional supplements so you want to switch to adult food once your puppy begins to approach maturity. There is no set age when the switch should be made because it will vary with the breed and individual dog.

In general, the smaller the dog the faster they reach maturity. Small breeds up to 30 pounds mature around ten to twelve months of age although some toy breeds reach maturity even sooner. Medium breed dogs up to 80 pounds will reach maturity between twelve to sixteen months and I believe your puppy may fall into this category. It really depends how much Great Pyrenees she has in her. Large breed dogs weighing more than 80 pounds can take up to two years to reach maturity.

When making the switch to adult food, do it slowly over the course of one to two weeks by gradually mixing in increasing amounts of the adult food with decreasing amounts of her puppy food to minimize gastric upset.

Dog Food Brands To Avoid: Steering Clear Of The Worst Puppy Foods

Understanding the things you want to look for when picking the best puppy food for your little one is important, but it is also important that you understand which dog food brands to avoid. Well try to help you do so below, as we explain some of the red flags youll want to watch out for.

  • Steer clear of mystery meats. Youll want to steer clear of any dog foods with unidentified animal meals or fats derived from unidentified meats. For safetys sake, it is best to avoid puppy foods that dont indicate the sources for their additives. Meat meals and rendered fats are not inherently problematic, but you need to know from which animal these by-products originated.
  • Avoid puppy foods with artificial flavors or colors. Many of the worst puppy foods contain a variety of unnecessary additives in preservatives, so youll want to avoid these foods whenever possible. In most cases, the fewer the ingredients listed on the bag of dog food, the better.
  • Try to avoid puppy foods with processed or enriched grains. Grains are usually perfectly acceptable carbohydrates for puppies, but there are some grains that are better for dogs than others. Whole grains are much better for your pooch than refined or processed grains are. Refined grains typically lack the fiber content of unrefined grains, and they wont keep your pet full for very long, either.

How Often Should You Feed Your Labrador

The amount of food you feed your lab each day is determined by its size, level of activity, and metabolism.

The feeding recommendations on the majority of store-bought dog foods are dependent on your puppys weight, and our chart above provides advice on many of the common foods for Labrador puppies.

What Do I Do To Care For The Newborn Puppies

The mother should spend most of her time with her puppies during the first few days after birth. For the first month of life, puppies require very little care from the owner because their mother will feed and care for them. In fact, in the vast majority of cases, the pet owner should not interfere with the mother’s care.

The puppies should be kept warm and should nurse frequently. They should be checked every few hours to ensure they are warm and well fed. The mother should be checked to make certain that she is producing adequate and normal-appearing milk.

“The puppies should be kept warm and should nurse frequently.”

If the mother does not stay in the whelping box the majority of the time, the puppies’ body temperatures must be closely monitored. If the puppies are cold, supplemental heating should be provided but caution needs to be taken to avoid burns as puppies do not have the same reactions to heat as adult dogs do. During the first four days of life, the newborn puppies’ box and external environment should be maintained at 85° to 90°F . The temperature may gradually be decreased to 80°F by the seventh to tenth day and to 72°F by the end of the fourth week. If the litter is large, the external temperature does not have to be kept as warm. As puppies huddle together, their body heat provides additional warmth.

How To Know If Your Puppy Is Fat

Pet obesity is a huge problem in the UK, with studies suggesting that 56 per cent of the nations dogs are overweight or obese. Fat dogs will struggle more to enjoy life and the likelihood of them suffering from serious conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, breathing problems and cancer, is increased. These health problems wont just put a strain on your wallet as they are costly to treat, but they could cause heartache too as each tends to lead to premature death. They are also at greater risk of arthritis, which is painful for dogs. Managing your pups food intake alongside suitable exercise for their age is the best way to prevent them getting fat.

Many dog owners dont recognise that their pet is overweight, but there are simple and easy ways to check. Look straight down at your pups body from above. Your pets waist should taper in to give an hourglass shape. If they look oval from above you will need to think about cutting down on their food intake, and if the hourglass shape is too extreme they are underweight.

Gently run your hands along both sides of your dogs chest and you should be able to feel their ribs through a thin layer of fat. The ribs should not be highly visible as they would be in an emaciated dog, but neither should it be difficult to feel them through a layer of fat.

What Can Puppies Eat

Heres a quick timeline of a puppys nutrition in the first few months of his life.

  • 0-3 Weeks: Puppies should be with their mother and nurse as they please. The mothers milk has the nutrients necessary to provide proper nutrition and protect puppies from diseases. During this time, you dont need to worry about how much to feed puppies because their mother provides them with nutrition.
  • 3-4 Weeks: Puppies will begin developing teeth and will begin weaning off their mothers milk. The puppy caregiver can blend a 50:50 portion of canned wet puppy food with a milk replacer in a flat saucer, gradually reducing the amount of milk replacer until youre only giving them puppy food. One should not be concerned if the puppies dont like the new food right away. It may take a few days to adjust to the new formula. Rubbing fingers in the mixture and then gently on the puppys nose and mouth can make the transition smoother.
  • 4-6 Weeks: By this time, puppies should be fully transitioned to puppy food.
  • 6-12 Months: Gradually begin to switch your puppy to adult food. Small breeds can switch between 7-9 months and larger breeds around the 12-month mark. It doesnt hurt to keep him on puppy food longer than needed to make sure hes getting all the nutrients he needs as a developing dog.

Encouraging Puppies To Drink

As well as putting a water bowl near your puppy’s food, place a few around the house in calm areas. Then they always have the opportunity to drink in a quiet place.Make sure the water bowls aren’t too big for your puppy to avoid them stepping into them. And avoid plastic water bowls as they can harbor off-putting smells and bacteria ceramic or stainless steel bowls are best.

Does Breed Affect Feeding Schedule

Tiny baby Daisy

Breed can play a factor in determining when to feed your puppy. Large breeds like the German Shepherd, Rottweiler and American Bulldogs will require much more food than small breeds like the Jack Russel and Yorkshire Terriers. Therefore, owners should consider their puppies size, and age in unison when creating a food plan. As your puppy grows its metabolic rate will change, and it will need more or less food depending on breed. In general, the more exercise the breed requires to stay healthy, the more food they need to fuel their lifestyle. Lean, agile breeds like the Vizsla and Greyhound will require more food than a Basset Hound or a French Bulldog. Your vet will happily inform you on breed specific nutritional requirements.
