Where Is Royal Canin Small Dog Food Made
Royal Canin makes most of their foods in facilities they own. However, these facilities are owned all over the world. They do have a few in the United States, though they have a dozen in China as well.
We do not know what foods they make where. They dont list the specific foods that are made in each facility.
Statistically speaking, most of their foods are likely made in China, as that is where most of their facilities are located. Therefore, this dog food is likely made in China.
However, because it is made in a facility owned by Royal Canin, the facility has to uphold the standards it set. Of course, we dont exactly know what standards they set. But, based on their very infrequent recalls, they are likely pretty good!
How Many Cups Should I Feed My Puppy
Assuming your dog has a typical activity level, toy breeds should have about ¼ cups to 1 cup, small breeds should have about 1 cup to 1 2/5 cup, medium breeds should have about 2 cups to 2 2/3 cups, and large breeds should have about 2 4/5 cups to 3 cups. -Senior dogs should be fed a little less than adult dogs.
What Else Should Be Done At Weight Checks
The weight checks do not simply include a visit to the scales and a recording of weight on the growth chart. The veterinary healthcare team can use this opportunity to check in on a few other important topics:
- Diet history: ask what food the puppy is eating and how much. The owners may have switched foods since the last visit, or adjusted the portion size on their own.
- BCS: the body condition score system is not yet validated in puppies, but it can still be useful in conjunction with weight and the growth chart to determine if the puppy is over- or under-weight. It can also help get the puppy accustomed to having this assessment performed, and the owner may be encouraged to do a regular BCS at home.
- Activity: ask about the puppys activity levels are they starting obedience classes or going for more walks? An increase in activity may warrant an increase in energy intake.

How Often Should You Measure
In order to interpret the data most accurately, frequent measurements are needed, especially early in the puppys life. This allows determination of what percentile curve the puppy is starting out on within the first couple of months of life, which gives a better idea of what the target weight should be at any given age. At a minimum, puppies should be weighed every two weeks, but the best option is to weigh them weekly. Make sure that these weights are recorded at the same time of day, as time of last meal, bowel movements and hydration status can all cause the weight to fluctuate during the day.
Bringing a puppy in for weekly weight checks may not be possible for some owners with busy schedules or who live further away, so the following home-based options can be considered:
- Bathroom scales: if the owner can safely lift the puppy, they can weigh themselves with the puppy and then subtract their own weight.
- Luggage scales: small puppies can be put into a pet carrier and weighed on luggage scales again subtract the weight of the empty carrier from the gross weight.
- Pet scales: these can be purchased online and will range in cost depending on the size of the scales.
If the owner is able to do some weekly weights at home, ideally the puppy should still attend the clinic for an assessment every four weeks , allowing the veterinary healthcare team to both ensure the puppy is growing well and to perform a BCS assessment.
Compare Big With Small Breed Pup Food
Formulas specifically designed for large breed puppies include less:
- Calcium. Inappropriate amounts can impact the development of the skeleton negatively.
- Calories and fats. By reducing the calorie and fat intake, you decrease the chances of overfeeding your puppy.
- Vitamin D. By decreasing the amount of vitamin D in a pups food, you ensure that the pet will not struggle with unwanted growth and imbalance issues.
- Phosphorus. Like calcium, too much of this mineral may result in skeletal defects.

What Can Puppies Eat
Heres a quick timeline of a puppys nutrition in the first few months of his life.
- 0-3 Weeks: Puppies should be with their mother and nurse as they please. The mothers milk has the nutrients necessary to provide proper nutrition and protect puppies from diseases. During this time, you dont need to worry about how much to feed puppies because their mother provides them with nutrition.
- 3-4 Weeks: Puppies will begin developing teeth and will begin weaning off their mothers milk. The puppy caregiver can blend a 50:50 portion of canned wet puppy food with a milk replacer in a flat saucer, gradually reducing the amount of milk replacer until youre only giving them puppy food. One should not be concerned if the puppies dont like the new food right away. It may take a few days to adjust to the new formula. Rubbing fingers in the mixture and then gently on the puppys nose and mouth can make the transition smoother.
- 4-6 Weeks: By this time, puppies should be fully transitioned to puppy food.
- 6-12 Months: Gradually begin to switch your puppy to adult food. Small breeds can switch between 7-9 months and larger breeds around the 12-month mark. It doesnt hurt to keep him on puppy food longer than needed to make sure hes getting all the nutrients he needs as a developing dog.

Why Talk About Nutrition
Socialization and habituation
Visits to the clinic every few weeks for weight checks can be a great way to not only monitor the growth of the patient, but also to socialize a new puppy. Pets may learn to have positive associations with the clinic if they get praise and treats for things like going on the scale or allowing a brief physical exam for assessment of body condition score .
New puppies and kittens will visit the clinic a lot in their first year for vaccine appointments, testing for heartworm and other parasites, and spay and neuter surgery. These are all great opportunities to check in with the pet owner and to assess how well their new family member is growing, and to see whether they have questions about what they are feeding .

With all of that in mind, it is time to look at an exciting tool that every veterinary healthcare team should have in their nutrition toolkit Growth Charts.
Are Maltipoos Picky Eaters
Small breed dogs have a reputation for being picky eaters, but in fact, its because they need very little.
Since their stomachs are so small, they can easily fill up on treats or table scraps, which is what makes them turn their noses up at their kibble.
Try to save treats for special occasions instead of dropping a few here and there. You may also use their kibble as treats so you can be sure they are getting a well-balanced diet.
If you notice your Maltipoo losing weight, its worth a visit to the vet to ensure theres nothing physically wrong with them.

How Often Should I Feed My Puppy
Dogs in general can have sensitive digestive systems that don’t respond well to being overloaded by too much, or completely new, food. When you’re feeding your puppy, it’s better to split their food portion for the day into smaller, frequent meals to avoid any pressure on their digestion. Here’s a simple guide:
- Weaning : four meals a day
- Up to four months or up to six months : three meals a day
- Four to 10 months or six to 12 months : two meals a day
