How Much Food Should I Be Giving My Dog

How Much Should I Feed Puppies

How much food to feed your puppy? | Veterinary Approved

Feeding puppies is quickly changing as they grow. Up to 8 weeks, puppies should only rely on their mothers milk. Afterward, you can start introducing specially-formulated food for puppies to them. Some puppies take a bit longer to accommodate the new food so make you eat enough in this essential growth stage.

How To Read Dog Feeding Charts

To be labeled as complete and balanced, the AAFCO requires dog food companies to include feeding direction on their packaging. Typically, these are laid out in an easy-to-read table, and daily serving amounts are based on your pets weight.

However, since dog food brands vary in their calorie content, feeding charts are not universal. This is important to remember if you ever switch dog foods. If the new food has a higher or lower calorie content, you may need to adjust your dogs meal size to avoid unhealthy weight gain or loss.

To get an idea of what a feeding chart might look like, heres a sample based on a typical dry food for adult dogs:

Dogs Weight
5¼ + cup for each additional 10 lbs.

How Many Times Per Day

We recommend feeding your dog their required daily amount, divided over 2 meals per day as this is better for their digestion . Feeding twice can also prevent begging between meals. If feeding twice isn’t possible due to schedules, once per day is also fine in most cases.

The below table has some suggested amounts to feed with our complete & balanced AAFCO recipes, with some rounding to match our available pre-pack sizes. Note that you can switch between standard recipes and leaner recipes to suit your dog as you observe their bodies over time.

How Much Should I Feed My Puppy

Puppies need to take in a lot of calories to fuel their rapid growth. At the start, that means about twice as many per pound as an adult dog of the same breed. Puppies grow the fastest in their first five months.

Look for feeding charts on commercial puppy food labels. You can use them as a guide. They provide recommended amounts based on a puppyâs age and weight. Adjust as necessary to keep your puppy in the best condition, something you may need to do weekly.

How Often And How Much Should You Feed A Puppy

How Much Should Dogs Eat?

Puppies nutritional needs are of course different from an adult or even adolescent dog. For starters, they often eat more times a day than adult dogs. Depending on your puppys breed and age, she may eat up to four meals per day or two to three times the amount of an adult dog.

AKC recommends a method called watch the dog, not the dish. Giving puppies a schedule for their meals, and then taking away any leftover food 10-20 minutes after a meal is served, helps to establish good eating habits.

This method will help you to learn how much your puppy needs and helps your pup to establish good habits, as in: if youre hungry, eat!

If a puppy misses out by not eating enough at one meal, their hunger will help them finish their meal at the next feeding and learn to eat when the food is available. And because they have frequent meals, they wont go hungry for long.

How much your puppy eats is also dependent on her breed size:

  • Toy and Small Breeds: 4-6 meals per day
  • Medium Breeds: 3 meals per day
  • Large Breeds: 3-4 meals per day

How Much Should Dogs Eat Based On Weight

The simplest way to gauge how much your dog should eat each day is measuring out their food based on their body weight. Naturally, smaller dogs need less food than larger ones, but what exactly is the perfect number?

First, its important to have an accurate handle on how much your dog weighs and whether their body size is considered small, medium, or large. Not having a grasp on your dogs weight could cause you to easily under or overfeed your pet.

Below is a recommended feeding schedule for how much and how often dogs should eat a day, based on their weight:

Are Elevated Dog Bowls Safe

Some sources claim that bigger dogs will benefit from elevated dog bowls. Elevated feeding bowls might be useful in cases of joint problems and arthritis in large and giant dogs. However, there is still the misconception that elevated dog bowls reduce bloat in large dogs.

Large and giant breed dogs are more prone to bloat and gastric dilatation-volvulus , which can be a life-threatening condition. A study by Ronald M. Bright concluded that eating from an elevated dog bowl is actually one of the risk factors of GDV.

Another study looked at risk factors associated with GDV. Results showed that around 20% of GDV cases in large breed dogs were attributed to eating from an elevated bowl. For giant breed dogs, the percentage was around 52% of the cases.

Tools Needed For Cooking Dog Food At Home

    • Food Processor: Before I start cooking a batch of homemade dog food, I blend up all the vegetables in my food processor. This Cuisinart food processor is my go-to. Its a bit smaller than traditional food processors but works just as well as a larger model. Blending up the veggies nice and fine will speed up the cooking process.
    • Dutch Oven: I make the entire batch in my large Le Creuset round Dutch oven. I love using a Dutch oven because I can ground the meat first, and then finish off the batch right in the same pot. The process is very similar to making chili except for dogs. Ya knowDog Chili. .
    • Measuring Cups: Rascal has his own set of measuring cups now because it makes measuring out food ingredients and the finished batch WAY easier.
    • Meal Prep Containers: This is basically meal prepping for your dog, so you will need some great Tupperware.

    Check the recommended feeding guidelines

Each pet food product has individual feeding guides based on the weight of your dog as well as the calories provided by the food. This should be used as the starting point for estimating how much food to offer your dog. These feeding guides have been carefully calculated, but as the name suggests, they are simply a guide and the exact amount fed must be tailored to your pets individual exercise requirements.

Different dietary formats have different energy densities, so it is important to weigh food and not estimate the quantity. Also remember that these feeding guides are determined based on daily servings so if youre feeding your dog multiple times a day, remember to divide the amount of food you feed them each time accordingly.

    Consider your dogs unique characteristics

Factors including your dogs size, breed, age and weight will determine how much your dog should be fed. Certain breeds, such as Kelpies and Australian Cattle Dogs have higher energy levels than Bansenjis and Chow Chows. This will impact the amount of food and calories these breeds should eat every day. Similarly, a toy breed, such as a Yorkshire Terrier will eat much less than a giant breed, such as a Saint Bernard. These factors should be taken into account when you select the type of dog food, but also when you work out the right amount for your dog.

Balance A Healthy Diet With Exercise And Play

The best guide to how well your puppy is doing, both physically and mentally, is how interactive, sociable and happy they seem. Puppies want to play, they want love and affection, and they want to eat and sleep. So long as they are doing these things, you are doing a good job!

While it is up to you which puppy food you buy for your new family member, avoid the traps of home remedies or food meant for human consumption, just as you should avoid giving your puppy adult dog food. Puppies need to get the right amount of nutrients to ensure they have the energy to grow strong, and the best way to achieve this is to feed your dog puppy food that has been designed with their breed and health in mind.

Once youve established which food your puppy enjoys, a meal plan throughout the day, and a healthy exercise routine, your puppy will soon settle into the habits you set for them, including when to expect meal times. From then on, just keep an eye on their eating habits and behaviour and let your vet know if anything changes. Otherwise, focus on enjoying your time with your puppy training them, playing with them, and maybe slipping them the occasional puppy treat as a reward.

When You Feed Your Dog Too Much

It can be difficult not to express affection for your dog with treats and a bit of extra kibble. However, overfeeding your dog can be disastrous for your dogs wellbeing.

Once your dog becomes overweight or obese, they are at higher risk for:

      • Joint issues, including ligament tears and osteoarthritis
      • Spinal issues, including slipped disks

We recommend weighing your dog to determine an accurate feeding amount, whether you feed homemade dry food or prepared meals. Then you will want to read the feeding guide on your dogs food packaging .

Recommended Serving Amounts For Homemade Dog Food

As a general rule, dogs will eat around 2 to 3 percent of their ideal body weight in fresh food daily. Larger breeds may need as little as 1 1/2 percent, and smaller breeds may need as much as 4 percent.

This works out to be approximately:

    • 2 pounds of food per day for a 100-pound dog
    • 1 to 1 1/2 pounds of food per day for a 50-pound dog
    • 1/2 to 3/4 pound of food per day for a 25-pound dog
    • 5 to 6 1/2 ounces of food per day for a 10-pound dog

There is much variation in what the ideal amount should be as it depends on how much your dog weighs and how active she is.

I feel that the best approach is to feed and watch if your dog is losing weight, give more, and if your dog is gaining weight, give less.

For our pugs, we feed a scoop each in the morning and a scoop each in the evening, plus all their supplements.

We have an easy system for this: homemade food is refrigerated in a sealed container with a measuring cup , and all the supplements are lined up together in a cupboard in the kitchen. Keeping your ingredients organized and accessible will make feeding time fast and smooth.

Compared to feeding commercial food, where you might scoop out kibbles or open up a can, feeding homemade food with all the supplements takes maybe 10 seconds more. And even if it took 10 minutes more, fresh wholesome food for our furbabies is worth it.

    Raw Dog Food Feeding Guide

A raw dog food feeding guide can help you learn how to properly feed your dog a raw diet. This type of diet is not for every dog, so it is important to do your research to see if it is the right choice for your pet. A raw diet can be beneficial for dogs that are overweight, have allergies, or are picky eaters. If you decide to feed your dog a raw diet, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you will need to find a reputable source of raw meat. Second, you will need to make sure that the meat is fresh and of good quality. Third, you will need to feed your dog the proper amount of raw food based on their weight and activity level. Fourth, you will need to monitor your dog closely to make sure that they are not having any adverse reactions to the food. If you follow these guidelines, you can rest assured that you are providing your dog with a healthy and nutritious diet.

Raw food dogs often have gleaming white molars as well as incisors. Tartar can still be found on the outside of a healthy dog, even if it is only a trace. The tripe lining, a characteristic feature of a ruminant animal, is a beautiful creature. The dogs do as well. While tripe is a good source of manganese, it is one of the few meats that is high in the essential mineral. Aside from vitamin B12, selenium, and zinc, this food provides a diverse range of vitamins. It is also an excellent tool for motivating fussy dogs to eat by relieving gut upset.

Combine this information with your knowledge of your dogs lifestyle to come up with the initial amount of food to offer your dog.

For example, if I had a relatively inactive 35-pound Corgi who had a tendency to gain weight, I might start with a little less food than the table recommends. On the other hand, if my dog was a 35-pound Border Collie who never sits still, I would feed a little more.

    Is My Puppy Underweight

Full or partial anorexia in dogs can lead to a multitude of life-threatening health problems, including the body shutting down to save energy. Prolonged underfeeding will mean your puppy doesnt get the nutrients they need to grow properly, and can lead to stunted growth, brittle bones and a weak immune system both in the short and long term. Anorexia is a condition which should be treated seriously and urgently. If your puppy doesnt eat after 24 hours or continually vomits up his or her food, seek help from your vet.

Similarly to an overweight dog, there are ways of telling if your puppy is underweight:

    • The ribs and spine are obviously pronounced, even when you are not touching their sides
    • When feeling their ribs, you feel no hint of fat nor muscle.

An anorexic puppy is much harder to manage than an overweight pet, largely because there are so many things that can cause the problem, including hormonal imbalances and psychological issues. It is also harder to get a dog eating again after it has stopped than it is to control the diet of an overfed puppy. Once your vet has diagnosed the problem and come up with a plan for you to follow, you will likely need to begin feeding your puppy small but regular meals until they are able to digest food properly again.
