Corn As Carbs And Protein

The Truth About Corn/Gluten in the Pet Food

Carbohydrates arenât all bad and are a good source of energy for dogs. Corn is a valid source for Maxâs carbs, and itâs okay if he has it in small amounts. Some pet food manufacturers turn to corn as a primary protein source, which is cheaper than using animal-based proteins. If corn germ meal is on the food label, youâre getting corn germ and other parts of the corn kernel. Itâs a cheap by-product from human food processing thatâs high in protein and used as a booster in lower quality foods. Itâs not harmful, but it shouldnât be high in the list of ingredients in a high quality food. The same is true of corn gluten meal, which mainly acts as a food binder. If you can afford it, avoid foods that rely on corn meal as the main source of protein.

The Good, The Bad & the UglyLets start with the Ugly!

If you feed your pet whole corn he will poop it out whole. I am sure that is a proven fact that we have all seen one time or another. I will by no means argue that point in this blog. Is that why corn has such a bad wrap? Do you still eat corn?

The Bad

I googled issues with corn as found on the world wide web. This is what I found.

Corn is a filler. This is just not accurate as a filler is an ingredient that provides no nutritional value. Corn provides many essential nutrients including protein, carbohydrates, antioxidants and fatty acids.

Corn has a high Glycemic Index. This means it has a tendency to raise the blood sugar of an animal. These indexes were created for humans, not animals. We need to keep in mind that our pets bodies do not work exactly the same as humans. There have been no established Glycemic indexes for cats and dogs. For the most part, animals control their blood sugar very well. Pets do NOT get type 2 diabetes as humans do.

Corn can cause my pet to have increased allergies and if not from the corn itself than from the storage mites that get into it. The incidence of grain allergies in pets is very low. To address the statement of storage mites, unfortunately, all grains can get storage mites, so corn is not a bigger culprit than any other grain such as barley or wheat. That being said a potential allergy to a grain mite also has a very low incidence.

Should Dog Food Contain Corn Gluten Meal

Now that we have discussed both- the merits and demerits of corn gluten meal, it is time to answer the main question.

Should corn glute meal be included as an ingredient or component in dog food?

Well, yes. Dog food containing corn gluten meal should be given to dogs, but only in the right proportion.

Many pet parents assume CGM to function as a filler to increase the protein content. As it is a source of plant-based protein, it is generally added to enhance the protein quotient. This led to many pet parents assuming that CGM functions as a filler. Nobody can deny the fact that plant-based protein is unable to fulfill the complete nutritional requirement. Hence, as long as the corn gluten meal is not trying to replace the meat-based protein, it is good to go for your dog.

Feeding CGM-laded dog food can also cause allergies over an extended period. Thus, it is also advisable to consult your vet about the necessary proportion.

Can My Dog Eat Cornmeal

Maybe, but there are many reasons to avoid cornmeal. In general, we dont recommend it for dogs.

While dogs have been fed cornmeal for decades, that doesnt make it healthy. Corn is not part of the canine diet, many dogs have trouble digesting it, and most cornmeal these days is made from nutritionally poor, mass-produced corn. Its a cost-effective binding agent for dog food, but it doesnt bring much to the table and can have adverse effects on dogs over time.

Wheat is not harmful to dogs, but it is high in sugar and available starch. Too much starch in your dogs diet can lead to weight gain and increase the risk of diabetes. In one study, researchers measured how well maize gluten feed digested and metabolized by dogs. Their results showed that gluten-free diets helped dogs lose weight and had decreased risk of diabetes.
