Why Won’t My Puppy Eat Puppy Food

Will Human Food Spoil Your Dogs Appetite

Why Won’t My Dog Eat it’s Food?

Its time that we let go of the idea of human food.Food is just food.

Its perfectly reasonable for your dog to prefer fresh food over bland, over-processed kibble.

And its really important that you add fresh, people foods to your dogs diet. Fresh fruits and veggies are packed with cancer-preventing antioxidants. Meat, eggs and fish are full of amino acids and nutrients that are destroyed when cooked and processed.

So, do not be afraid of giving your dog yummy, fresh human foods, for fear that she will become finicky.

If you never give your dog anything other than kibble, she may still find human food enticing, even more so because she is not allowed to have it.

Matilda and Cow mainly eat a raw, fresh diet, and they still enjoy eating kibble when I use it as training treats or when I dont have any fresh food thawed for them. They enjoy kibble even more now because it is a novelty.

Instead of trying to keep your dog from developing a palate for fresh food, just negotiate and add fresh, nutritious toppers to their meals.

It does not take a lot of extra time to boost your dogs meals. You can use an ice cube tray to freeze small portions of yogurt, eggs, fish, blended veggies, fruits, etc. Then, you can microwave a cube just until it is melted, then stir it into your dogs food. Or just serve them as mini ice pops.

Thats how easy it is to make sure your dog gets more flavor and variety in their food each day, and it only takes an extra minute of prep time.

Bowl Change To Spark Interest In Kibble

Your puppy may need a bowl change. Instead of going out and buying a new bowl though, try putting their food straight onto the ground, as long as you have hard floors. If they eat off the floor, then look for a new bowl, perhaps of a different color. If they didnt have a metal bowl beforehand we recommend them as theyre less likely to cause any allergies.

Getting Your Puppy To Eat More Food

A normal, healthy puppy will not starve itself. Leave out their food for 10-15 minutes. If they dont eat it, pull up the food and try again in an hour or two. Its necessary for your puppy to learn that this is what there is for dinner.

You may also decide to make dinner time a little more fun by using their food for training or in food puzzles. Dogs and puppies often like to put a little work in for their food. The change of pace might make it an exciting event!

Feeding your puppy in a bowl isnt required. Whats required is that they get their required calories in a day, so if they prefer eating their kibble from a toy, then theres no harm in it, and it will actually work their minds at the same time.

Be sure not to feed your puppy their treats after their meal, such as going out for a training session, or even a play session. You dont want your puppy associating the end of mealtime with playtime or time for treats. This will teach them that when theyve finished its time for fun, so theyll think, Look, Im finished now, lets go! Where are the treats?!

Lastly, its possible your puppy food just isnt enjoyable to them, so try changing it up. But if you do so, be sure to transition slowly to avoid an upset tummy.

Puppy Adjusting To A New Family And Home

Why Won

Puppies usually need a day or two to get used to their new surroundings. It’s more critical that small breeds and very young puppies eat regularly. If your puppy is between 8 and 12 weeks, hasn’t eaten in a day, and is acting quiet, talk to your vet. If your puppy is bouncing around like a maniac, he’ll probably come around to eating once he adjusts to his new environment and all the stimuli that come with it.

And be sure to check with whoever had the puppy before you on feeding habits: ask what type of bowl or dish was he fed in, when he was fed, and whether he was a social or independent eater. If you can match these factors, your new furry best friend will feel more comfortable at mealtime.

Research Raw Food Diets

A raw food diet tries to replicate food a dog would have eaten in the wild. It consists of some mixture of meat, bones, organ meat, raw eggs, some fruits, vegetables, and dairy.

Fans of raw diets believe its the healthiest option for their dogs and that it promotes shinier coats, cleaner teeth, more energy, and healthier skin. Naysayers point out the risks, which include exposure to harmful bacteria for both dogs and humans, an unbalanced diet, and the potential dangers of sharp pieces of bone injuring a dogs teeth and digestive tract.

In spite of its popularity, some research has come out against raw food diets. As early as 2012, the American Animal Hospital Association stated, Based on overwhelming scientific evidence, AAHA does not advocate or endorse feeding pets any raw or dehydrated non-sterilized foods, including treats that are of animal origin. The American Veterinary Medical Association discourages the feeding to cats and dogs of any animal-source protein that has not first been subjected to a process to eliminate pathogens, because of the risk of illness to cats and dogs, as well as humans.

Additionally, some frozen raw dog foods have been recalled due to the presence of pathogens like E. coli and salmonella. Owners feeding these diets should be careful to always stay aware of the most recent recall information for their brands.

Is Your Dog Not Eating Dry Food

“Help Cesar My Dog Won’t Eat!”

Does your dog turn up their nose at dry food, only to wolf down canned food the minute you set it down? This is a common complaint from pet parents, and it can mean a few different things.

It may be that your dog has dental or oral pain. Many pet parents believe that if their pet is eating, they must not have oral pain, but thats not the case. They have to eat, so many dog struggle silently with oral pain for months or years until a dental procedure is done to extract any rotten or infected teeth.

While some dogs will still eat dry food even with severe oral pain, many prefer canned food, as its easier to chew. If your dog is no longer wanting to eat dry food but will eat canned, they should be seen by their veterinarian for an oral examination.

It may also be that your dog prefers canned food to dry food, as it often smells stronger and may be seen as more of a treat. Try mixing canned food with the dry kibble to encourage your dog to eat, and gradually transitioning to a higher ratio of dry food, until your dog is back to eating dry kibble.

Some dogs simply refuse to eat kibble in favor of canned food. While this can have some negative consequences, such as worse dental disease or a higher food bill, it may not be a problem to have your dog on canned food long-term. Talk to your veterinarian to see if feeding your dog an all-canned diet may be the best option for them.
