Can U Feed Dogs Raw Chicken
Considering how many dog foods contain chicken as an ingredient, its a safe bet that you can feed your dog chicken. Most sources recommend against raw chicken, due to the risk of salmonella or bacterial infections, although the movement toward raw food, including raw chicken and raw chicken bones, is growing.
Reviews Of The Best 10 Sportmix Dog Food
- Fortified with vitamins and minerals
- 100% balanced diet
The SPORTMiX Wholesomes Chicken Meal & Chickpea Formula is one of my favorites from this brand in many ways. It is grain-free and suitable for adult dogs of any breed and size.
The nutrients are balanced and easy to digest. If you have a sensitive stomach dog, you will love this product. The source of protein is chicken meal, which is high quality and provides dogs with the amino acids needed to build muscle. However, it also tastes great.
The other source of protein is the dried egg product. This also has a very high bioavailability.
The carbohydrate sources for this product from SPORTMiX Wholesomes are potatoes, peas, and chickpeas. These are high-quality complex carbohydrates that are easy to digest, rich in nutrients and fiber, and provide plenty of energy for dogs.
The product also contains nutrient-rich vegetables and fruits. Examples are apples, blueberries, cranberries, carrots, and spinach. They contain plenty of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that contribute to overall health.
The other thing that makes SPORTMiX Wholesomes Chicken Meal & Chickpea Formula very healthy and delicious is the chicken fat. This not only gives the food a delicious taste, but also an extra source of energy.
Essential fatty acids for dogs are omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. These make the skin and coat healthy. The recipe also contains L-carnitine. This product is popular with both dogs and owners.

Worst Wet Dog Food: Cesar Filets
Cesar Filets is considered one of the worst dog foods because of its high salt content .
It has sufficient water for processing, animal liver, chicken, beef and meat by-products, wheat gluten, ground wheat flour, cornstarch, salt, pea fiber, sodium tripolyphosphate, calcium carbonate, added color, choline chloride, magnesium.
It helps if you also understand that the quality of ingredients cannot tell the whole story, but the amount of meat in the dog food is critical to consider before determining whether it falls in the best or worst category.
The amount of protein in Cesar filet is about 44%, with 22% fat and 25% carbohydrates.
This analysis shows that this dog food includes an above-average level of protein intake and just near-average fat.
At the same time, the carbs are below average compared to a portion of typical canned dog food.
Another factor making it a low-quality dog food is that it has artificial colorings added to it, which is useless and not preferred.
What Dog Food Is Killing Dogs
A pet food recall is widening after the Food and Drug Administration announced that more than two dozen dogs died after eating Sportmix brand dry kibble. The statement issued on Monday said that the suspect is aflatoxin, a byproduct of a corn mold Aspergillus flavus, which at high levels can kill pets.

What Do Customers Dont Like About Sportmix Dog Food
Chicken meat by-products are common in SportMix products. These should not be a problem in healthy dogs. However, in many dogs, these ingredients can cause sensitization or allergies.
We often find unspecified meat meals in Premium formulas. According to SportMix, they are only made from premium meats, but in many cases the meat meal is a lower quality part of the animals.
Another questionable ingredient is corn. It is a great source of energy, however, it can cause sensitivity in many dogs. Corn is not considered a premium ingredient, but rather a cheap source of energy.
Kal Kan Complete Adult
This dog food makes the list because of questionable ingredient quality that is not nutritional and is somewhat harmful to dogs.
The primary ingredient is corn, which we just mentioned does not provide the proper nutrition your dog needs.
The second ingredient is meat and bone meal which is a dry product from the mammal tissues, including bones, exclusive of any added hair, blood, hoof, hide trimmings, horn, manure, rumen contents, and stomach.
Meat and bone meal may have a lower digestibility than most of the other meat meals.
Scientists believe that this decreased absorption may be because of the lower essential amino acid and higher ash content in the ingredient.
The meat itself can come from any mixture of cattle, pigs, goats or sheep, making classifying impossible for particular food allergens.
Although meat and bone meals are still considered meat concentrates rich in protein, a generic ingredient like this cannot be considered a quality item.
Kal Kans third ingredient is a soybean meal which a by-product or leftover of soybean oil production more often found in farm animal feed.
Although soybean meal comprises about 48% of protein, this ingredient would be estimated to have a lower biological value than meat.
Inexpensive plant-based ingredients like this can boost the total protein, an element that must be considered while judging the actual meat content of this dog food.
I think you get the point that these types of ingredients are not ideal for your furry friend.

Sportmix Dog Food Recall History
There is no history of a Sportmix dog food recall. Midwestern Pet Foods and Nunn Milling Company have not had any recalls either.
Trust is important when Im choosing a pet food. This is a member of my family were talking about! Budget is always a concern when it comes to anything I buy, and unfortunately, I cant always afford the best.
I try to get as much value as I can though, by reading the label as doing some research. If a company makes that difficult, it doesnt impress me. I want to know exactly what the ingredients are, otherwise, why would I be reading the label? I want to know where things come from, where theyre made, and how they’re prepared too. That might sound like a lot sometimes, but it can literally be a matter of life and death.

What Are The Symptoms Of Aflatoxin Poisoning In Pets
Pets are highly susceptible to aflatoxin poisoning because, unlike people, who eat a varied diet, pets generally eat the same food continuously over extended periods of time. If a pets food contains aflatoxins, the toxins could accumulate in the pets system as they continue to eat the same food.
Pets with aflatoxin poisoning may experience symptoms such as sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice , and/or diarrhea. In some cases, this toxicity can cause long-term liver issues and/or death. Some pets suffer liver damage without showing any symptoms. Pet owners whose pets have been eating the recalled products should contact their veterinarians, especially if they are showing signs of illness.
There is no evidence to suggest that pet owners who handle products containing aflatoxin are at risk of aflatoxin poisoning. However, pet owners should always wash their hands after handling pet food.

What Do People Like And Dislike About Sportmix Food
Customers like that the food has a higher protein content than many other dog foods, getting rid of excess moisture and unnecessary ingredients like soy. Excellent levels of omega fatty acids and in some recipes glucosamine and chondroitin helped support athletic dogs and keep joints healthy.
One common complaint with some of the recipes, and in particular the Premium line, is that the company chooses to use chicken by-product meals for an ingredient in the first five listed, which can be an allergic trigger for many dogs. Its a lower quality ingredient in most cases.
The Premium mixes have unnamed meat meals which makes it difficult to prove where the meat is coming from. Although the company does claim to use only premium meat portions, traditionally meat meal has been lower quality parts of the animal. Talk to your vet first.
Some of Sportmixs recipes also use corn as the second ingredient. Corn can be a source of high energy, but its not considered a premium ingredient. Consider carefully what your dog thrives on before you consider those recipes. If your dog isnt a high energy sporting dog, corn may provide too many empty calories.

What Is The Problem
On December 30, 2020, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. announced a recall of certain lots of Sportmix pet food products after FDA was alerted about reports of at least 28 dogs that died and eight that were ill after consuming the recalled pet food. Multiple product samples were tested by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and found to contain very high levels of aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are toxins produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus and, at high levels, can cause illness and death in pets. The toxins can be present even if there is no visible mold.
On January 11, 2021, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. expanded the recall to include all pet foods containing corn and manufactured in the companys Oklahoma plant, and having an expiration date on or before July 9, 2022. As of January 21, FDA has been made aware of more than 110 dogs that have died and more than 210 that are sick after eating certain pet food manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods. Not all of these cases have been officially confirmed as aflatoxin poisoning through laboratory testing or veterinary record review. This count is approximate and may not reflect the total number of pets affected. Reports submitted only to the pet food manufacturer are not shared with FDA and are not a part of this count. FDA continues to work with veterinarians and state partners to follow up on suspected cases of aflatoxin poisoning.
FDA is conducting follow-up activities at the manufacturing facility.
