What Formulas Does Kirkland Have
Kirkland has 6 Super Premium options, which include formulas for all life stages, as well as a small breed formula and a healthy weight formula. They are all made with fresh chicken, except for one which is made with lamb.
Kirkland also has a Grain-Free Natures Domain line, which consists of 8 formulas. In this review, however, we are going to stick to focusing on their popular Super Premium range.
Victor Senior Healthy Weight
This formula was created for older dogs that are not as active. It has 27% protein and 11.5% fat. This formula includes beef, chicken, pork, and fish as sources of protein. It also has glucosamine and chondroitin in it to help long-term joint health. It also has L-carnitine to help with lean muscle development.
Not only is this formula good for senior dogs, but it is also a great option for adult dogs that need to lose weight. It is high in fiber and can help older dogs get into the shape they need. Because of this, it is not a good option for highly active dogs or growing puppies.
Salmonella And Other Concerns
The FDA released a video focusing on another major threat in commercial pet food: Salmonella bacterial contamination. They also cite other major toxins of concern. The video references the case of a specific commercial pet food plant that was also the subject of a March 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. It details how at least 53 known human illnesses were linked to commercial pet foods made at that plant in 2012. A class action lawsuit linked to this outbreak was settled in 2014.
The video also cites the dangers of over supplementation of nutrients in pet food. A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in February 2013 suggested a correlation between liver disease and the amount of copper supplementation in AAFCO diets.

Merrick Backcountry Pacific Catch Recipe Review
Merricks Backcountry range is a blend between traditional dry kibble and freeze-dried raw food. This mix and style of recipe is unique to Merrick and can be extremely appealing to some dogs.
The above Pacific Catch recipe contains a massive proportion of fish ingredients, including Salmon, Salmon Meal, and Whitefish Meal. These fish ingredients provide an excellent proportion of protein and fat. However, given the large portion of Salmon, the level of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids is surprisingly low.
The recipe is rounded out with the usual mix of plant-based ingredients such as Sweet Potatoes, Potatoes, and Peas. These provide carbohydrates and dietary fiber.
There is a small portion of some vegetable by-products present, such as Potato Protein and Pea Protein. However, the proportion of these is small enough that it is not significant.

Victor Grain Free Ultra Pro
This grain-free option has more protein than any of the other formulas. It has 42% protein and 22% fat. The protein in this formula consists of beef, pork, chicken, and fish. It is ideal for highly active dogs, and it is low in carbohydrates.
This is another formula that is a good choice for dogs with grain allergies. It is perfect for highly active dogs and sporting dogs, but not so much for overweight or low energy dogs. It is best for dogs that are under 70 pounds. Also, while it is for all breeds and ages, it is better suited for adult dogs than puppies.
Dog Food Made In China Might Be Pulled From The Shelves Of Us Stores But
Back in 2014, Chinese-made jerky treats were fingered for containing melamine and causing the death of more than a thousand dogs. At the time, large pet food stores like Petco rushed to pull all Made in China treats from their shelves.
What you possibly dont recall, however, was that a similar anti-China sentiment was stirred up in 2007 when China was fingered for pet food tainted vegetable proteins.
Why should you care? Because, despite the 2007 recall, Chinese made or sourced products found their way back on the shelves of pet stores worldwide only to be recalled once again.
So, while trusted pet food stores and the FDA make the effort to recall tainted products once they are discovered on shelves, some dog food made in China is still slipping through and making it to pet store shelves in the first place.
So, what can you do? Know the source of your dog food and the ingredients that go into it. If you cant find sourcing information, contact the manufacturer and ASK.

What Brand Of Dog Food Is Killing Dogs
A pet food recall is widening after the Food and Drug Administration announced that more than two dozen dogs died after eating Sportmix brand dry kibble. The statement issued on Monday said that the suspect is aflatoxin, a byproduct of a corn mold Aspergillus flavus, which at high levels can kill pets.
Who Manufactures Kirkland
Kirkland dog food is a private-label brand which is made for the large retailer Costco. Along with 4health, another private-label brand, it is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods, Inc., which is owned by Schell and Kampeter, Inc.
The latter is a family-owned, U.S.-based pet food manufacturer with plants in Gaston, South Carolina Meta, Missouri and Lathrop, California. The company was founded in 1970 by brothers-in-law Schell and Kampeter, who bought Milling Meta Co., a livestock feed, and dog food producer.
In those days, they produced only 5% dog food. They expanded their production with the inclusion of new plants in California and South Carolina, in 1999 and 2002 respectively.

Super Premium Healthy Weight Dog Formula Formulated With Chicken & Vegetables
This dog food is formulated to help your dog achieve a healthy weight. For this reason, it is extremely low in fat, at just 6%. This amount may not be suitable for all dogs, as lack of fat can lead to problems with the skin and coat as well as tiredness, but it can suit those with special dietary needs due to conditions such as pancreatitis or IBS.
This food may be below-average in fat, but it is pretty high in carbs – after the first ingredient come 5 different carbohydrate sources: brown rice, peas, cracked pearled barley, millet, and oatmeal. It would be better to see more protein and fewer carbs here, as weight management products should have below-average fat, but above-average protein.
There is the usual addition of a healthy range of fruit and veg to support your dogs immune system. This food is very high in fiber – along with the inclusion of probiotics, this will aid your dogs digestion. For this reason, I highly recommend it for dogs with digestive problems.
This recipe also contains glucosamine and chondroitin to support your dogs joints in the same amounts as the above Mature Dog formula.
Alternative Dog Food: Wellness Complete Health Healthy Weight
This Wellness Healthy Weight recipe has just a touch more protein, fewer carbs, and, in comparison, considerably more fat, at 10%. Relatively speaking, this is still fairly low fat.
Does It Mean Made In America Is A Safe Way To Go
No. Wrong again.
Country of origin labeling laws in the United States state that pet food products that are put together in the United States can be labeled as Made in the USA.
What does that mean for you? It means that your favorite pet food that is Made in the USA might still contain contaminated ingredients imported from China.

Lack Of Variety In Grain
Since the grain-free line from Victor is still relatively new, there arent as many options in it as there are in some other lines that have been doing grain-free for longer. I dont think this is a reason not to buy it, but its worth mentioning because some owners like to have more options to rotate between.
Victor Dog Foodselect Line
These formulas are suitable for dogs of all sizes and life stages. Unlike the previous product line, Select focuses on one specific protein source. These are mostly tailored for hairy friends who are picky eaters. The ingredients are also beneficial for pups prone to food sensitivity. Lets check out one of these recipes.

Is Victor Dog Food Better Than Blue Buffalo
Victor Dog Food currently offers 17 different formulas of dry dog food, including 5 grain-free formulas. Canned dog food is also available in 5 varieties. Compared with Blue Buffalo, this is a much smaller variety. Compared to Blue Buffalo, Victor formulas contain more protein from meat instead of from grains or fats.
What Is The Average Price Of Victor Dog Food
Victor dog food comes in a wide variety of sizes, ranging from 5 pounds to 50 pounds. Depending on which formula you select, it can be purchased in different sizes.
A 5-pound bag of Victor typically ranges from $10 to $15, depending on which formula you get and where you purchase it.
A 15-pound bag of Victor typically costs between $22 and $35 while a 30-pound bag ranges from $30 to $60. Generally, the Victor Select formulas are the more expensive ones since they have more specific ingredients.
50 pounds is the largest sized bag of Victor dry food, but only certain formulas come in this size. It is primarily for the formulas that are geared toward large active dogs, such as the Hi-Pro Plus and Grain Free Hero formula. The 50-pound bags are typically between $45 and $85, with Grain Free Hero being on the more expensive end and Multi-Pro being the cheaper option.
Overall, Victor is cheaper than most of the other similar brands, especially since it comes with large bags available. It is similar to Fromm and Orijen. Fromm is slightly more expensive and doesnt come in as many different sizes while Orijen is much more expensive and recommends larger portions for dogs.

Overview Of Ingredients In Victors Recipes
Protein
The majority of Victors recipes seem to include 3 meat-based ingredients in the first 5 ingredients, which is the ideal. What I like about Victor is that on their website you can see the percentage of meat vs. plant protein, and the former always far outweighs the latter.
Each of Victors recipes contains beef meal as their primary protein source. While this ingredient may sound unconvincing, it is actually a meat concentrate that contains nearly 300% more proteinthan fresh beef.
Fats
Victor includes good-quality, named fats, including chicken fat, flaxseed, and canola oil . These all provide your dog with nourishing fats that help keep her skin and coat healthy, as well as providing her with good sources of energy.
Carbohydrates
Victors regular recipes usually contain two of the following carb sources: grain sorghum, whole grain millet, feeding oat meal, and whole grain brown rice. These are all healthy, whole grain sources of carbs for your dog, which are full of fiber and vitamins.
Victors grain-free recipes contain sweet potatoes and peas as alternatives to grains. These are both excellent grain-free alternatives, as they not only provide carbohydrates but contain lots of antioxidants as well.
The majority of Victors recipes have reasonably low levels of carbs. In the regular, lower-protein formulas, however, the number of carbs can rise to almost 50% due to the inclusion of more grains.

Foods Dangerous To Dogs
A number of common human foods and household ingestibles are toxic to dogs, including chocolate solids , onion and garlic , grapes and raisins , milk , nutmeg , mushrooms, fatty foods, rhubarb, xylitol, macadamia nuts, as well as various plants and other potentially ingested materials.A full list of poison/toxic substances can be found on the ASPCA’s website.
The 2007 pet food recalls involved the massive recall of many brands of cat and dog foods beginning in March 2007. The recalls came in response to reports of renal failure in pets consuming mostly wet pet foods made with wheat gluten from a single Chinese company, beginning in February 2007. After more than three weeks of complaints from consumers, the recall began voluntarily with the Canadian company Menu Foods on March 16, 2007, when a company test showed sickness and death in some of the test animals.
Overall, several major companies recalled more than 100 brands of pet foods, with most of the recalled product coming from Menu Foods. The contaminant was identified as melamine, which had been added as an adulterant to simulate a higher protein content.

Victor Recall History List:
Victor hasnt experienced any recalls that we could find, which is a great track record. Their facilities and recipes are of good quality and held to a very high standard.
While there are always accidents that can cause recalls for even the best companies, the fact that Victor has such a clean record is a good sign.
Its Not Only Chinese Ingredients Or Foods That Pose Danger To Your Pet
A good number of pet food recalls have centered on foods that are either sourced from or made in China. This has created a good deal of warranted concern about feeding pets foods that have any connection to China at all.
Certainly, a large majority of tainted pet food can be linked to China, however, other pet foods that are not linked to China can pose danger to your pet too. For example, the recent 2017 discovery of Pentobarbital in Evangers pet food.
Evangers pet food company claims that their dog foods are produced and sourced in the United States, yet, one dog died and three dogs became sick after eating pentobarbital-tainted Evangers food.
We could also look at the Petco warehouse investigation by the FDA in 2008.
The FDA found the warehouse in Joliet, Illinois, to be infested with birds and rodents and requested that Petco clean the location. When Petco failed to bring the warehouse up to standard, the US. Marshalls seized all products from the warehouse for being stored in unsanitary conditions.
Chinese companies arent always to blame for pet food contamination, however, the damage from U.S. pet foods is generally contained due to safety standards and production regulations.
