About Natures Recipe Dog Food
Natures Recipe is a high-quality but affordable pet food brand with a tagline thatEvery ingredient counts. They base their dog food recipes on real meat and create unique recipes to suit every dog.
There are plenty of dog food companies that use premium ingredients. But Natures Recipe keeps their healthy formulas affordable for most average pet owners.
As a budget-conscious pet owner who values the health of my four-legged family members, Natures Recipe is one of my favorite brands. This company also offers an impressive variety of product lines.
What To Look For In Salmon Dog Food
There are hundreds of dog manufacturers throughout the world that offer salmon dog food recipes. But these products vary in the quantity and quality of salmon ingredients.
Obviously, the more premium brands use the better quality of fish as their first ingredient. The cheaper brands place salmon meal in the middle or latter portions of their ingredients deck, hence just a small component of their recipes.
Still, better products use salmon as the only animal protein and healthy fats source, to minimize the chances of food allergies.
Some salmon food formulas blend the salmon with other animal proteins to cut down the cost. The finest dog food with salmon recipes source only wild-caught salmon, which is known to be the best type, and some use commercially-raised salmons from fisheries.
So what should you look for when choosing salmon dog food good for your tail-waggers?
Well, the best salmon dog foods use fresh salmon or salmon meal as the first ingredient. As mentioned above, many salmon variants of dog food products include salmon as just a minor component of the recipe, with other animal meat meals as the primary ingredients.
Some brands use other animal proteins or fish meals such as whitefish meals or herring meal to complement the salmon.

Additional Ingredients Of Interest
Aside from the top five ingredients, there are several other notable ingredients found in Natures Recipe Large Breed Easy to Digest Chicken, Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Recipe Dog Food. Some of these ingredients include: sweet potato, poultry fat, tapioca starch, tomato pomace, and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables plus vitamins and chelated minerals.
Its great to see sweet potatoes used here. They are one of the super foods and contain important vitamins, complex carbohydrates, and theyre an excellent source of fiber. Most dogs also like the taste of sweet potatoes. I would imagine that the salmon and sweet potatoes combined make this food taste good to dogs. Pumpkin and apples are also good sources of dietary fiber. Tomato pomace is also used here as a dietary fiber, though it has other uses according to pet food companies.
The food also contains chelated minerals which are easier for dogs to absorb.Citric acid is a natural preservative and its used here, along with rosemary extract. The food also contains yucca schidigera extract which has been used in animal feeds for the reduction of waste odors and for increasing the absorption of nutrients. Yucca is also credited with other medicinal properties such as helping joint pain.

Natures Recipe Healthy Skin
Natures Recipe offers a Healthy Skin formula in a wet and dry food version. This formula is different from other products from this brand as it uses a plant-based source of protein.
The vegetarian recipe replaces animal proteins with soybean meal. Soybean meal is rich in amino acids, but plant protein can be complex for dogs to digest. This dog foods lower crude protein content of 21% may not be entirely bioavailable.
This dog food includes sources of omega-6 fatty acids like canola oil to support healthy skin. Dietary fats help encourage the production of natural oils by the skin, but this recipe would be better if it included more sources of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.
This healthy skin formula is one of the very few vegetarian dog foods available from reputable pet food companies. But I generally would not recommend this formula due to the soybean protein source and limited omega fatty acids.
Natures Recipe Dog Food History
The Natures Recipe company follows the tagline, Every ingredient counts and they talk about promoting the health and wellness of pets with their products. They do not, however, provide much in the way of detailed information about their ingredients or their manufacturing processes.
It is worth noting that Big Heart Pet Brands, the company that manufactures Natures Recipe products, also makes some low-quality pet food brands maybe even in the same facilities as Natures Recipe products. All that we know for sure is that Natures Recipe has only been recalled once. Here are the details of that recall:
- In , the Natures Recipe company issued a voluntary recall for 19-ounce pouches of Natures Recipe Oven Baked Biscuits with Real Chicken due to potential salmonella contamination.

Which Types Of Dogs Is Natures Recipe Best Suited For
Natures Recipe is best for companion dogs since the protein content in their recipes is on the lower side. This brand is a good choice for owners looking to feed as close to organic as possible, with grain-free and other diet options. However, we have noticed that Natures Recipe can be hard to digest with dogs that have sensitive stomachs.
Company Recall And Quality Control History
At the time of the 2007 pet food recalls Del Monte was the second largest pet food concern but there have been several mergers and changes in other pet food companies since that time. In addition to Natures Recipe, Meow Mix, and Milk-Bone, Del Monte also makes Kibbles n Bits, Milos Kitchen, Pup-Peroni,Gravy Train, 9Lives, and other pet food brands which have been subject to recalls.
Natures Recipe in particular has a good reputation with their food and manufacturing practices. They have had one voluntary recall, in October 2012, of some treats due to the possibility of Salmonella. Otherwise they have never had any recalls even during the melamine crisis of 2007.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Salmon For Dogs
As mentioned earlier, salmon is a healthy food source for both humans and canines. It is an excellent source of natural omega 3 fatty acids that offer numerous health gains.
Salmon is also a rich source of protein, and essential nutrients like magnesium, potassium, zinc, selenium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.
Among the health benefits that can be derived from salmon are:
Healthy Skin and Coat
The natural oil from salmon is known to give your dogs skin and coat a huge boost. Some vets recommend giving dogs with problematic skin salmon oil as a supplement to address this issue. It is believed to aid in producing healthier skin and shinier coats in dogs.
Moreover, it is also suggested by some studies that omega fatty acids can help alleviate skin irritations and allergies. This is why vets recommend salmon-based dog food for food-sensitive dogs.
High in Quality Protein
Salmon is also a healthy source of great quality protein, which is the most important nutrient for healthy pups. While this fish is high in protein, its low in fat, making it ideal for elderly and overweight dogs. Since its high in protein, salmon is also wealthy in essential amino acids, which dogs need to regulate hormones and build stronger cartilage.
Healthy Immune System
Omega 3 fatty acids can also help boost a dogs immune system and even help prevent canine cancer, according to multiple studies.
Boost Brain Function
Is Grain Free Bad For Dogs

“Why make dog food at home when you can just buy it at the store?”
The #1 reason is simply this: Control. You have full control over every single ingredient with no surprises.
Dog’s with allergies, sensitivities, or intolerance can live a happy life and you can live worry free. Which is why we like making grain free treats at home too.
The second reason is money savings! When it comes to healthy dog food the top brands are quite expensive, but you can simply use the same ingredients at home and save an absolute ton.
Of course, the next biggest concern is your time investment.
But surprisingly this isn’t as bad as it looks, and with just an hour or less per week you can make enough food to last for several days. We recommend you make use of a some big ziplock bags or containers and freeze what you’re not immediately using.
Each recipe allows for customization based on your dog’s individual nutritional requirements and tastes. But, before you get started you must speak with a Vet to see what your dog should and should not eat, as each dog’s diet will vary.
Is Salmon Good For Dogs
Yes, salmon is good for dogs. In fact, salmon has become a favorite main ingredient in many premium dog foods today upon recognizing the many health benefits this amazing fish has to offer our canine companions.
Salmon is an abundant source of omega 3 fatty acids, which are highly beneficial to your dogs immune system as it is for humans. Many fish fit for human and dog meals have this important nutrient.
Salmon is considered by many nutritionists as the best among the fishes used to obtain these natural omegas. These nutrients are also known to reduce inflammation and enhance a dogs skin and coat health.
Salmon is also rich in proteins, which is why it is a choice ingredient for premium-quality dog foods. Another great reason to choose salmon-based dog foods is that very few dogs are known to have allergies to salmon, unlike the more common animal protein sources such as chicken and beef.
Compared with other popular fish for consumption, salmon is considerably lower in mercury. Most salmon dog food products are cleared for mercury levels that are considered harmful to our pooch.
However, it is important to check the source of the salmon as it can tell you the quality of the fish.
Lastly, salmon can be very tasty for most dogs, which is why it is often recommended as one of the best dog food for picky pups.

Who Makes Natures Recipe Dog Food
The Natures Recipe brand of dog food is produced and manufactured by Big Heart Pet Brands. Natures Recipe was founded 35 years ago by Jeff Bennet who was also the founder of Earth Elements, another pet food brand.
There isnt a great deal of information available regarding the history of Natures Recipe, however. Big Heart Pet Brands is part of the J.M. Smucker Company which produces a variety of other pet food brands including Milk-Bone, Natural Balance, Kibbles n Bits, Pup-Peroni, Gravy Train, and Milos Kitchen.
The recipe is crafted to be easy on the tummy, making it ideal for every dog especially those who may be ill or are recovering from illness. The gentle formula focuses on a dogs digestive health and delivering his every energy need.
The first ingredient is water, surprisingly. Ordinarily, this would cause some concern for pet owners who would prefer a meat-first recipe. However, since its crafted to support sensitive stomachs, the water is actually there to aid in processing the food.
Next to water is chicken. Chicken is an excellent source of protein and lean meat. It can be a problematic ingredient for food-sensitive dogs, but a welcome treat for those without allergies to poultry. Adding more nutrients into the mixture is soybean meal, which comes at third.
Its also an ideal feed for super energetic canines who may blast through a lot of calories due to their active lifestyle.
