If a dog wont eat or eats too little is can be a sign of a health problem. So if your dog starts to look underweight, seems unwell, or if you are worried, have him checked by your vet.

Puppies need to eat more frequently than adult dogs. And lack of appetite in small puppies is unusual. If your normally hungry puppy refuses two meals in a row, have him checked by a vet. Dont delay. Whenever in any doubt visit your vet.

But is your dog is just being picky about what he eats hell eat one thing but not another and has no other symptoms at all? The chances are he is training you to feed him the diet of his choice.

For fit, healthy and happy dogs you can, if you wish, cure your dogs picky eating using the system described above. Let us know how you get on in the comments section below!

How To Choose A Dog Food

Choosing an appropriate diet for your dog is a complicated process. The sheer number of dog food options available is overwhelming. Unfortunately, there is no one diet that is best for every dog. Just like humans, dogs are individuals and their dietary needs vary depending on factors such as age, health, and personal preferences.

To make the process even more complicated, there are also a lot of myths about dog food on the internet. Many people fall victim to advertising campaigns or scare tactics warning them away from commercial dog foods. Fortunately, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association has published a guide entitled The Savvy Dog Owners Guide: Nutrition on the Internet to help pet owners decipher fact from fiction when doing their own research about dog food.

Learning how to read a pet food label can also help demystify the process of choosing a dog food. The information on a pet food label is guided by the Association of American Feed Control Officials . AAFCO is responsible for establishing definitions for many of the terms you will find on a bag of dog food. Understanding these labeling requirements can make it easier to identify which products are best for your dog. Look for the words complete and balanced diet on the label.

How Do You Change A Puppys Food

The first thing youll need to decide is which food to feed your puppy as an adult.

A good place to start would be an adult food from the same brand of puppy food youre currently feeding, assuming your pup likes the food and is doing well on it. If you are transitioning from one Fromm product to another, like Puppy Gold to Adult Gold, a transition period is not absolutely necessary, but is encouraged.

That way, the transition wont feel like such a big change, and it will be less likely to upset your pups tummy.

However, ANY food change can potentially result in an upset stomach or diarrhea. Thats because it takes time for the digestive tract to get used to something new, especially if your puppy has a sensitive stomach.

Making the change slowly and gradually will help prevent these symptoms. A slow change will also make your dog more likely to accept the new food if theyre a picky eater.

Here are two ways to make the switch slowly

  • The Mixing Method.
  • Mix the puppy food and new adult food together, starting with a smaller portion of the adult food. This works out to about 1 part new adult food per 3 parts puppy food.
  • After a few days, switch to a 50:50 mixhalf puppy, half adult.
  • After a few more days, switch to 75% adult food, 25% puppy food .
  • In another few days, switch to 100% adult food.
  • The Two Bowls Method.
  • Place a bowl with a small amount of the new adult food right next to your puppys regular food bowl .

Puppies, especially those of a larger breed, need the right amount of fatty acids, fiber, and protein, along with controlled amounts of calcium so bones grow at the proper rate. They also need certain omega-3 fatty acids for proper development.2 This is why puppies need food formulated for their nutritional needs, rather than adult dog food.

Weaning describes the transition of the puppy’s diet from its mother’s milk to the solid growth diet of puppyhood.

In the wild, weaning begins naturally as soon as the puppies start to develop their teeth, typically at three to four weeks of age. Suckling then irritates or hurts the mother who will move away and leave her puppies for longer and longer periods. Natural weaning involves the female dog regurgitating her food and the puppies consuming this material. Many pets will also do this and cause concern to owners. This is a natural maternal function and nothing to be worried about.

Weaning should begin when the puppies are about three to four weeks old. The sooner the puppies are weaned, the less the strain on the mother and the sooner she will return to normal condition.

If the puppies have been hand raised for any reason, you can begin the weaning process sooner. It is worthwhile to begin offering soft foods as soon as their eyes are open.

There are plenty of reasons you may want to switch your dogs current food. Perhaps your dog has been diagnosed with a health issue, youre looking to switch to a more premium dog food, or maybe your dog is just getting older and needs something that better fits their changing nutritional needs.

It is important that your dog switch their food gradually. Switching dog food too fast can lead to tummy trouble for your furry companion. This is particularly important after adopting a dog from shelter while it is often a good idea to keep your dog on the same food that he was fed at shelter, if you do decide to feed something else you might need to be even more patient. While a dog is adjusting to a new home, he might have anxieties and as a result digestion issues. Because of this reason, many pet parents may blame the food for the digestion issues. While that can be possible, its best to not do a bunch of switches in the first month or so until your dog starts to get familiar with their new home.

To transition, mix your dogs current food with their new food. Over 7 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current dog food while increasing the amount of new dog food.

Puppy food is specifically formulated to give a puppy the nutrition it needs to grow up strong and healthy. However, once a puppy gets old enough, it should transition off of puppy food and on to adult food. This is because the caloric and protein requirements are very different for a dog than they are for a puppy. The key to this transition is to figure out the right time to take your dog off of puppy food and to complete this transition in a way that won’t make your dog sick.XResearch source

How Should I Transition My Dog To Adult Food

Transitioning to a new diet should always be done gradually to prevent causing a digestive upset. A good diet transition should take at least 7 days but may need to be longer if your dog has digestive sensitivities or is prone to diarrhea. When you begin a diet transition, on day 1, start by mixing around 25% of the new diet with 75% of the puppy diet. As long as there are no signs of digestive upset, you can increase the proportion of the new diet to 50% after a few days. Finally, you can continue slowly increasing the ratio of the new diet to 75%, then 100%, when your dog should be eating the new diet with no adverse symptoms.

If at any point your dog develops symptoms of an upset stomach such as diarrhea, loss of appetite, flatulence, or bloating, this is a sign that the guts are not yet adapted to the new diet. Slowing down the transition or adding a probiotic supplement can usually resolve this issue. However, If the symptoms persist for more than 24-48 hours, switch to a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice, white fish, or scrambled egg, and contact your veterinarian for further guidance.

How Should I Start Weaning The Puppies

Start by placing one of the reconstituted puppy milk replacers in a flat saucer. A 50:50 mixture of milk replacer and water is recommended. Do not use goat milk or cow milk. You can dip your finger in the formula and wet the puppies noses and mouths. Repeat this process two or three times a day until they begin to drink the milk replacer on their own. This usually takes one to four days.

Next try offering canned puppy food crumbled and mixed with the milk replacer. As the puppies lap at the fluid they will also ingest the food. Decrease the amount of milk replacer daily until they are eating the canned food with little or no moisture added. This should be completed by four to six weeks of age.
