While Cats Are Particularly Drawn To Japanese Food Which Is Rich In Meat And Seafood You’re Unlikely To Find Them Stealing Ice
The sixth taste is thought to be particularly popular with carnivorous animals, which may discern it via receptors in their mouths that evolved to detect calcium. And as you would expect, pet food companies have already begun targeting it with cocktails of flavour-enhancing chemicals.
But there are some flavours that you will never find in certain pet foods.
For example, most wild carnivorous animals lack the receptors for tasting sugar or carbohydrates. And unlike dogs, which have been living around humans and feasted off our scraps for up to 40,000 years, domestic cats have only been around for about 4,300. For the majority of that time, they were considered a kind of free pest-control that could fend for themselves.
So, while cats are particularly drawn to Japanese food, which is rich in meat and seafood, you’re unlikely to find them stealing ice-creams or doughnuts unlike dogs, they simply haven’t been around humans for long enough to have evolved the ability to taste sugar.
Cats are irresistibly drawn to the chemical compounds found in rotting fish
On the other hand, because vegan animals eat exclusively vegetable matter, which is often rich in fibre and carbohydrates, they tend to prefer sweeter pet food.
Pet obesity is a growing problem in the developed world, with one survey of veterinary professionals at a vet show in London suggesting that around 51% of dogs, 44% of cats and 29% of small mammals are now overweight or obese.

Dont Encourage Picky Behavior
Its possible that your dog enjoys the attention he gets when he refuses to eat his food. In order to prevent this, youll need to ignore him during mealtime, and interact with him only after youve removed his plate.
Be patient and praise your dog only when hes done eating his food, even if its just a few bites and some kind words. Until then, stay out of your dogs feeding area and let him enjoy his meal quietly and without distractions.

Add Raw Or Lightly Steamed Veggies
This provides an antioxidant boost for all dogs, especially if theyre older or overweight. Raw veggies should be finely grated, ground in a blender or food processor, or juiced so the cellulose is broken down. Or, try our Great Greens whole food supplement which provides an ideal blend of essential nutrients for dogs.
Keep Serving The Meal Until Your Dog Eats It
Sometimes you happen upon a pet that is just too stubborn for his own good. Hell refuse to eat no matter what you do. In that case, the only way to curb this problem is the gentle starvation method. Begin by placing your dogs food down for 30 minutes. If he refuses to eat in that time, take it back up. Wait until his next normally scheduled mealtime and put it down for 30 minutes again. If he doesnt eat, take it back up. Eventually hunger will win over and your dog will eat his food. If not, theres probably a deeper problem than just a picky pup, and you should head to the vet.

Add Something Smelly To Your Dogs Dish
There are lots of kibble toppers out there, but as a raw feeder, I try to be careful about what Im adding to our dogs food, because it can upset the delicate balance Ive created ha ha ha actually, Ive found a few things that are better than kibble toppers.
Canned sardines I get the ones in water or olive oil . I dont add sardines daily, because of the sodium content, our dogs get sardines once or twice a week . I shop at Walmart , because they have the best price at $0.88 a can. I also stock up at Costco when their sardines go on sale for less than $5 for 6 cans.
Ive also added canned salmon or mackerel to our dogs food.
Fish flakes I dont think there is any nutritional value to fish flakes, but they do work in getting the dogs to eat. Usually Sydney or Scout are being picky on mornings when Im running late for work sprinkling fish flakes on their food sparks their interest.
Canned green tripe I buy canned green tripe from Tripett and PetKind . I order the bison tripe by the case. It has the carrageenan gum in it , but the amount is less than humans eat in their ice cream and the can is 99% tripe. Because its a cooked product, I dont think it has the same nutritional punch as fresh green tripe, but our dogs love it and they get some a few times a month.
I also buy pork and bison tripe from PetKind. It doesnt have carrageenan gum and the tripe content is 70%.

Kal Kan Complete Adult Food For Dogs
Touted as a complete and balanced dog food diet, the Kal Kan Complete Adult Food For Dogs is advertised to contain all the protein necessary to provide dogs with enough stamina and energy.
While it does make good on its promise, we cant help but check the label to see if it really is as good as it sounds. And thats where it went downhill.
The first ingredient in this recipe is ground yellow corn. Now a dish that doesnt start with meat is already low-quality in our opinion , but the corn is supported by many more carb ingredients in the food.
Aside from corn, there is one more corn product , two grain products , and one legume ingredient. Three of them are in the first five of the ingredients list.
Now lets move on to the meats. Theyre both unspecified. Meat and bone meal does not refer to which animal contributed to the meal.
Its a vague term that could mean either one type of animal meat was used or a lot. If your pet is particularly sensitive to some types of animal protein, then it becomes even more worrying. You dont know what youre feeding your pup.
Another thing is the use of the term chicken by-product meal. When meat is simply stated as chicken then it refers to the chickens muscle meat.
Throw in the word by-product and that becomes open to interpretation. Anything leftover from processing meat is considered a byproduct. So you can get meat and organs, but you could also be getting entrails, feathers, and more.

Maybe Theyre A Picky Eater
Some pups are simply picky eaters, and that makes it more difficult to keep them at a healthy weight. If this is the cause of their weight issues, you can try adding a little bit of wet food into the mix or try using dog food toppers to entice them into eating more than usual. Dog food toppers have the added benefit of giving them the nourishment they might not be getting from their ordinary food, which can affect their weight as well. Pumpkin toppers are excellent for dogs with sensitive stomachs who need to gain some weight.

Pet Foods Made From More Sustainable Ingredients Such As Insects Or Soya Are Generally Just As Acceptable To Carnivorous Pets As The Real Deal
According to Logan, this is not down to the way pet food is formulated, but humans succumbing to their beloved pets’ pleading gazes. “The reason we make pet food palatable is that if they don’t eat all the food that we give them, it won’t meet the nutritional needs that they require,” he says. “The real problem is owners feeding them too much pets can’t open the packets themselves.”
However, there is an upside. There are mounting concerns about the environmental impact of pet food, too in 2009, two New Zealand scientists estimated the planetary cost of keeping a dog as roughly twice that of having a medium-sized SUV.
Pets given too much calorific processed food may, just like humans, put on extra weight
This is where palatants come in. Because most pet foods comprise a fairly tasteless base that is spruced up with delicious flavourings and smells, pet foods made from more sustainable ingredients such as insects or soya are generally just as acceptable to carnivorous pets as the real deal.
“According to this really large-scale study that we’ve just finished, the animals on vegan pet foods seem to be just as happy as animals on meat ones,” says Knight, who is hopeful about their future potential.
“There is a broad recognition that the need to be more sustainable will have a big impact on the pet food business,” says Logan, who explains that the pet food company he works for has just released its own brand of insect-based pet food.

Gentle Giants Canine Nutrition Chicken
Gentle Giants have produced a chicken-based dry budget dog food that is packed with vitamins and minerals. It uses twelve whole fruits and vegetables including beets, tomatoes, blueberries, cranberries, spinach, celery, and apples.
This means that your dog will not only be enjoying a flavor sensation, they will also be absorbing Vitamin A, Vitamin B 12, and Vitamin C from natural sources. These aim to foster good immune health in your dog. We are a little disappointed in this formula’s protein and fat content.
Containing only 22% protein, this food falls below the average amount in this price bracket. Still, this will adequately meet the nutritional needs of your dog and support their muscles and bones.
This formula has been designed for dog’s with sensitive stomachs, so it might be a good idea to try this if your pet is having digestive trouble with standard canine food.
Whilst, it isn’t really competitive with premium foods, Gentle Giants will be more than adequate for pet parents on a tight budget.
Top With Canned Dog Food
A particularly picky dog might change his mind if you add a small amount of canned wet dog food on top of the dry food. This method is still more affordable than an all-canned food diet, plus the kibble will stay crunchy and retain its dental benefits. Mixing the two foods is also an excellent way to transition a dog between a wet and dry diet.

Stop Giving Your Dog Scraps
Does your dog prefer to shun his food in favor of table scraps? Unfortunately, this is a problem that you need to take responsibility for and fix.
When a dog gets to taste from our table, hes exposed to tastes that are far more versatile than his everyday dry kibbles. Once he realizes this, he will turn his nose up at his own meals and wait for something more exciting. To avoid this, you need to stop giving your pup table leftovers as this will only reinforce his behavior.
Besides it being a bad habit, feeding your dog foods with unbalanced nutrition can cause him to gain unhealthy weight and he might miss essential nutrients. Also, remember that some common people foods can be very poisonous to dogs.
In the beginning, your dog may exhibit obvious signs of displeasure when you refuse to give in to his begging and feed him from the table, and he may stubbornly refuse to eat his food, hoping that youll give in.
In that case, dont worry and dont give up. As long as your dog is a healthy adult, he should be fine to skip a meal or two. Once he realizes that your food is off-limits, he will have no choice other but to eat his own food again.
Likewise, be sure not to give him too many treats since this can ruin his desire for regular dog food as well.
