A Few Caveats To Note
Whilst the chances are that you can make up one suitable meal for your dog out of the things that you can find in your fridge or cupboard, it is important to note that suggestions that will follow below are appropriate for a one-off meal in an emergency only, and are not designed to replace a proper diet as they will not contain all of the appropriate nutrients.
The goal is to fill your dogs stomach in a pinch so that they do not have to go hungry, and without giving them anything that will upset their tummies, but you must of course replace their normal food at the earliest opportunity.
Additionally, the suggestions made will be fairly bland and suitable for most dogs, but may not be appropriate for dogs with allergies or that require special diets.
Gradual Transition To Raw Food
Moving your dog from one diet to another is better for some when we take it slowly. Over a four-day period of time, reduce the quantity of their previous food and swap it for raw, allowing them to gradually adjust. For example:
- Day 1 Feed ¾ their usual food and ¼ raw
- Day 2 Feed ½ their usual food and 1/2 raw
- Day 3 Feed ¼ their usual food and ¾ raw
- Day 4 Feed a fully raw meal and away you go

Dog Not Eating Why Your Dog Isnt Eating & What You Can Do
Aly WalanskyAug 06, 2020â23 min read
Think of your dogâs favorite meal. Maybe itâs chicken, or salmon, or a kibble that they canât resist. When your dog gets a mere whiff of the food, they likely come rushing towards you to get a bite. Therefore, on the rare occasions that your dog is not interested in eating their favorite meal, you have reason to be concerned that something is wrong.
As a responsible pet owner, it is your job to ensure that your dog is properly cared for. Sometimes this requires a proactive approach, but oftentimes, such as in this one, it requires a more reactive approach.
In the case that you notice that your dogs food bowl hasnt been touched, there are likely several things that are racing through your head. You might be wondering: is my dog okay? Is there something wrong? Are they sick or ill?
Of course, thatâs understandable. As a pet parent, deeply care about your canineâs health and well-being. Nevertheless, before you panic, there are several steps that you can take to ensure that your dog is safe and well.
It is also important to keep this fact in mind: just because your dog is not eating like they usually do, doesnât necessarily mean they are in grave danger. Itâs easy to see the loss of appetite and assume your pet is sick, but they could be perfectly fine. Loss of appetite can be something as minor as an upset stomach or something as serious as cancer.

When To Feed Your Dog
The times and frequencies you feed your dog depends on their age and health. We will now look at how often to feed a dog, as well as when to feed a dog.
Im not one to stick to a rigid routine for when I feed my dogs. The time varies between 6am and 10am for breakfast and 5pm and 8pm in the evenings.
Some days, I feed them their whole meal quota in the evening. It all depends on what suits us best that particular day. For our dogs to be adaptable, having less routine can enable us not to panic when we miss a time slot, and in turn, prevent your dogs becoming anxious too.
For those that do prefer to have set mealtimes, there is nothing wrong with this its all about personal preference and fitting it into your lifestyle.

You should switch to an adult dog food when your puppy is anywhere from 18 months to 24 months old. Large or giant breed puppies take a little longer to reach maturity, and many of them are still growing until they turn two years old.

Transitioning To Homemade Dog Food
Most dogs dont have a problem making the switch to homemade food. If yours is prone to digestive issues, start slowly by mixing a little bit of the homemade food with the commercial food.
Over the course of a week or two, gradually increase the amount of homemade food while decreasing the commercial food.
If your dog vomits or has diarrhea, try introducing only a couple of new ingredients at a time until their systems are well adjusted to the fresh diet.
For dogs with health issues, please consult with a veterinarian if you arent sure what kind of supplements are needed. Use your best judgment, the way you would when feeding yourself or your family.
What Fresh Food Can I Feed My Dog
If youre wondering what fresh food you can feed your dog, the answer is quite a bit. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that many of the same foods you eat are perfectly safe for your four-legged friend. Of course, youll want to avoid any foods that are high in fat or salt, as these can be harmful to your dog. But otherwise, feel free to get creative and mix up your dogs diet with some healthy, fresh foods. Some great fresh food options for your dog include fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, and green beans. You can also give them lean meats like chicken or fish. And dont forget to include some healthy grains like brown rice or oats. By feeding your dog a variety of fresh foods, youll not only be keeping them healthy, but youll also be giving them a delicious and nutritious meal that theyre sure to love.
There are several different diets for your dog, and it can be difficult to decide which is the best for him. If you feed it to your dog, he will be completely satisfied with it. They can also be fed cooked or raw meat, fish, vegetables, or rice in place of their regular diet. When it comes to food for your dog, size, breed, and age are all important factors to consider. Puppy food should be fed to puppies in the commercial sector of the market. Because they lack the immune system to fight off bacteria, the pups on a raw diet should not consume it. Small meals should be fed on a regular basis.

Alternatives To Chicken And Rice
There are reasons why you may consider feeding your dog an alternative to rice and chicken when they are under the weather.
One of the reasons could be they are constipated. The following are some of the alternatives to chicken and rice:
Pumpkin For Dogs
If your dog has an upset stomach, pumpkin is another great food for them especially if they are constipated.
Since it is high in fiber, it helps with regulating the digestive system. It is also high in essential minerals and vitamins such as Vitamin A, C, B6, and E, iron, niacin, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, and potassium.
If your dog is constipated, add two tablespoons of pumpkin to their rice and chicken meal. Ensure that the pumpkin does not have any seasonings as they are toxic.
Bone Broth
If your dog is not doing well with solid food, feeding them bone broth will maintain their strength until they are ready to eat something solid.
It will also help in bringing back their appetite. You can use either chicken legs or beef bones to make the broth.
Baby Food
Since human baby food is designed for easy digestion, it is a good alternative.
If your dog is allergic to chicken, you can feed them the meat-based meals of the stage II variety. Check the ingredient list to ensure that there are no spices or seasonings added.
Commercial Dog Food Alternative
If you cannot prepare the chicken and rice at home, you can purchase a âbland dietâ that is already prepared for you.

Ate Something They Shouldnt Have
Puppies love to get into things and often end up with objects in their intestines/stomachs that they cannot pass this is called a foreign body. âSymptoms of a foreign body include loss of appetite or not being able to keep anything down , and lethargy,â says Davis.
If you suspect that your dog ate a foreign body or toxic object, your first instinct should be to bring them to a vet. The faster you get your dog medical attention, the better odds they have of making a full, complete recovery.
âA foreign body can be fatal and may require surgery or treatment to pass the object, so it is imperative you go to the vet clinic once you notice a pair of socks is missing, and your dog looks quite guilty and miserable!â says Davis.
