How To Stop Dog Shedding (Easy Tricks from A Vet)

As we mentioned earlier, dogs can shed excessively for different reasons. Its important to determine the reason why your dog is shedding so you can choose the best food for his shedding. This can involve a trip to the vet to see if your dog has allergies, a skin infection, or certain diseases. Your vet can treat some of these issues. You can find solutions to flea and tick problems in the form of topical preventives or some of the popular oral treatments available today. If your dog has allergies or other skin problems, your vet can help with these problems, too, but changing your dogs diet may also be advised.

    Shedding caused by food allergies

One terrible symptom of allergies in dogs is itching followed by scratching. This scratching will often cause your dogs skin to become raw and the hair comes out. After you or your vet have identified your dogs triggers, you can buy dog food that doesnt contain these ingredients. If your dog has only one trigger, such as chicken, you will still have lots of protein choices such as beef, lamb, and fish dog foods. Just check the ingredients to make sure there are no items that include chicken, chicken broth, or anything else made with chicken. The same is true for other allergens. If your dog is allergic to eggs, for example, you would need to check ingredients to make sure none of the items include things made from eggs.

What To Look For In Dog Food For Shedding And Dry Skin Problems

All dogs thrive on a high protein diet. This is especially the case for active pups. Proteins act as building blocks in the body and are necessary for healthy functioning.

Conversely, a protein deficiency can lead to several health issues, including dry or irritated skin or excessive shedding.

In addition to protein, essential fatty acids like Omega-3 and Omega-6 will help nourish your dogs coat. Foods that are natural sources of these fatty acids include salmon, sardines, anchovies, and fish oil.

Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants are also an essential part of your dogs diet.

These should always be supplemented in your dogs food, and the particular ones you want to look out for include Vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as the B vitamins.

Zinc, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and iodine are also healthy supplements that are often included in dog food.

Also, be sure to avoid any foods with unnecessary fillers and artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives that could be triggering an allergic reaction in your pet.

These foods can be problematic for dogs to digest, resulting in various health issues, of which shedding and skin issues are one.

    What Causes Excessive Shedding

BEST DOG BRUSHES FOR SHEDDING AND HEALTHY FUR HAIR

Now that you know what to look for, lets talk about what causes excessive shedding in the first place.

    Poor Diet

Some dogs may have sensitivities to certain ingredients in their food, even if they dont react to them in other ways.

This will cause them to miss the nutrients they need for a shiny and healthy coat. And, some commercial dog foods have fillers and additives that most dogs should avoid.

So be sure youre feeding your dog a high-quality diet made with natural ingredients. This includes animal proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Also, dehydration can contribute to excessive shedding too. So ensure that your pup has access to clean and fresh water at all times.

    Allergies

Even high-quality food can have an ingredient that causes allergies for your dog. For example, chicken and beef are both natural and delicious protein sources.

But some dogs cant eat them. This isnt to say that chicken and beef or unhealthy. It just means some pups are allergic.

If your dog is allergic to specific proteins or other ingredients, no matter how healthy the food is, they wont be able to tolerate it. So, its essential to find a diet that doesnt trigger their allergies and excessive shedding.

    Stress

If youve ruled out diet, health disorders, and food allergies, another reason your dog may be shedding is because of stress.

Anxiety, stress, and depression make your dog release epinephrine. This is also known as adrenaline.

WOW! Once a week in the summer!? Isnt that a bit too much? I usually do it once a month in the summer and once every 2-3 months when its colder. Will try to give him a bath every 10 days or so and see how it goes.

I need to get a better anti-shedding shampoo because my little guy is driving me crazy with all the hair he keeps leaving behind. I brush him daily and still theres plenty of hair in the house. He eats good food but hes a mixed breed and hes not one of those breeds that are non-shedders.
