Proper Nutrition For Dogs
Like humans, dogs have nutritional needs that must be met in order for them to thrive. Dogs’ nutritional needs differ from our own, so you can’t exactly start sharing your own dinner with your dog. Feeding an incomplete or imbalanced diet can lead to vitamin and nutrient deficiencies in dogs.
Dogs need enough calories to meet their energy requirements. A dog’s daily caloric need depends on the dog’s life stage and activity level. Your veterinarian can help you determine how many calories your dog needs each day.
A homemade dog diet should contain an appropriate balance of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat. Vitamins and minerals must be added to the food to ensure it is complete and balanced.
- At least 10% protein, such as chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef
- Up to 50% carbohydrates, such as rice, pasta, and potatoes
- About 2.5-4.5% fiber, which can come from vegetables like peas, green beans, and carrots
- At least 5.5% fat, usually in the form of vegetable oil
- Vitamin and mineral supplements
If you are ready to get started cooking for your dog, the first step is to talk to your veterinarian. Your vet may have recipes for you to try. Or you may need a referral to a veterinary nutritionist or a vet that focuses on canine nutrition.
Watch Out For Empty Fillers
These include ingredients like like corn, wheat, soybean, sorghum, and rice ingredients. In addition to being converted into fat, as mentioned earlier, they are often by-products of human food production rather than whole food ingredients. This means that they probably have little nutritional value. In addition, corn and soybeans are genetically modified , and since grains overall are too high in carbs they tend to interfere with insulin and glucose metabolism, and lead to obesity.
It’s important to remember that not all grains are bad. Since cats are obligate carnivore, you should feed a high animal protein, grain-free diet, but dogs, especially active and working dogs, can thrive on a grain-in diet made of whole grains. When looking for a grain-in diet, avoid refined grains and opt instead for ancient grains, including quinoa, millet, and amaranth.
How Much Should I Feed My Dog
Dog obesity is a growing concern in the veterinary community and has been linked to many health problems in dogs. Luckily for our pets, we are usually more disciplined about controlling their diets than we are about controlling our own. Knowing how much to feed your dog and what healthy dog weight looks like can be tricky. Many owners accidentally overfeed their pets, which is why it is important to take your dog in for regular checkups and to talk with your vet about appropriate portions. The guidelines on the back of the bag are just that guidelines. Some dogs may require more than the recommended amount, whereas others require much less. Activity level, time of year, nursing, illness, and more factors can all impact how much a dog needs to eat. Dog people will often advise that you should feed the dog thats in front of you instead of strictly adhering to dog food serving size guidelines that may or may not be exactly what your dog needs.

Risks Are Greater For Small Children
Children are more susceptible to foodborne illness than adults because their immune systems arent fully developed. Thus, its not recommended that you feed your children dog food .
Another often overlooked risk of dog food is that it may be a choking hazard for small children.
This is especially true for dry kibble, which can be difficult for small children to chew and swallow safely.
If you have a young child at home, make sure you keep the bag of kibble out of reach and keep a close watch on them when its time for your dog to eat.
If your child accidentally consumes dog food, contact your pediatrician or local poison control authority for more information about which steps to take to ensure your childs safety.
Dog food has the potential to cause illness from bacterial contamination of the food, which could make you sick. Children are at higher risk of developing foodborne illness and shouldnt consume dog food.
What Does Glycemic Load Mean
Glycemic Index is a measurement of the impact on elevation of blood sugar that a food causes.
since the process to form the food into kibble is based on 40-45% of starches both as a durable and cost saving device for manufacturers and for providing low-moisture structural integrity: starch and by-product meals are used as binders to cement the components of the food so that it can be pushed through an extruder and cut into appealing shapes.
When your dog eats a large amount of starch or carbohydrates, it gets broken down into sugar in the body and her pancreas releases insulin to move the sugar in the blood into the bodys cells so that it can be metabolized.
Carbohydrates are the only food that causes a quick rise in blood sugar. Glycemic load details the amount of carbohydrates a food contains and its glycemic index , a measurement of its impact on blood sugar.

Best Dog Food For Puppies
The nutritional needs of dogs vary throughout their life. Puppies have different nutritional needs than adult dogs, and senior dogs have their own nutritional considerations. Most dog food companies carry specially formulated puppy foods for each stage of a dogs life, making it easier to narrow down your choices. If you are concerned about which is the best dog food for your dogs life stage, consult your veterinarian to see what stage food is appropriate for your dog.
Your puppy requires a different nutrient balance than an adult dog. This is especially true for large breeds. Feeding a large breed puppy food can help, as their growth needs to be monitored carefully to prevent bone and joint problems. Other puppies do well on both puppy food and food labeled for all life stages. The best food for your puppy depends on your puppys size and breed. Always consult your veterinarian for recommendations on puppy feeding, and advice on how to switch puppies to adult dog food.

What Is Dog Kibble And How Is It Made
April 27, 2020
Dry dog food makes up the large majority of our pups’ diets, and it comes in many shapes and sizes: organic, all natural, grain-free, and even exotic . But did you ever step back to think about what dog kibble actually is? Is dog kibble healthy? Is it processed? Why is every single pellet of dry dog food exactly the same shape and size? And most importantly, is mass-manufactured dry dog food the healthiest source of nutrition for my dog?
A few weeks ago, I walked uptown in New York City to our neighborhood pet store to grab a new bag of dry dog food for my long-haired dachshund Django. I lugged the 15 lb. bag ten blocks home, dragged it into our kitchen, and started pouring out the contents of the bag into a massive Tupperware container. I watched the tiny pellets bounce into the plastic container and began wondering… what exactly is this stuff anyway? Although Mike and I always splurge on an organic and/or premium dry dog food with high quality animal protein and all-natural ingredients – no chemical pesticides, no preservatives, no added hormones, no artificial ingredients – I still wanted to better understand what was going into our adorable little sausage dog’s dinner bowl every day.

What Is Kibble Dog Food & Cat Food
Kibble is another name for dry dog and cat food. It is made from ground up ingredients, including meat, grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. These ingredients are mixed, shaped into pellets, and then cooked in a process called extrusion. If you’re feeding a grained dog kibble, it will use a grain as a binder that keeps the ingredients together while they’re mixed. If you’re feeding a grain-free dog kibble, it uses legumes, like chickpeas, or another starch as the binder.
If you’re feeding a kibble dog food that is certified complete and balanced by AAFCO , it needs to meet a number of requirements for nutrition. If the ingredients included in the recipe can’t naturally meet these requirements, the formula will usually have synthetic vitamins and minerals add as well.

Buying Guide For Best Human
Your dog is a member of your family, so it makes sense that you want to feed it food that is safe and nutritious. Human-grade dog food is made from ingredients that are safe for human consumption and are processed, handled, transported, and stored according to a strict set of regulations. However, just because dog food is good enough for humans doesnt mean it is necessarily of exceptional quality, so it’s important to pick the right one.
First, you need to know exactly what the term human-grade means, and then you can move on to the finer points, such as choosing between wet, dry, dehydrated, and freeze-dried food, as well as looking at the guaranteed analysis and whether the dog food you’re considering is complete and balanced.
