What Are Foods Are Toxic To Dogs

Several substances are highly toxic to canines. Be extremely careful and never allow your dog to consume alcohol, caffeine, or chocolate.

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs, although the type of chocolate and the amount that was consumed plays a factor. White chocolate isn’t nearly as toxic as dark chocolate, but it still contains enough fat and sugar to make your dog sick.

According to Hill’s Pet Nutrition, “The toxic component of chocolate is theobromine. Humans easily metabolize theobromine, but dogs process it much more slowly, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system.” A larger dog can also consume more chocolate than a smaller dog before suffering negative effects.

Here is a recap of the most dangerous things that dogs should never consume:

Foods Dogs Cant Eat: Raw Meat

Raw meat is a controversial topic for pet owners. Its a great source of protein, but it does carry the risk of microbes and parasites like E. coli or, in raw poultry, salmonella. If you do give raw meat to your dog, buy the highest quality possible and keep all ingredients fresh. Heres what vets think about your dogs diet.

Recipes With Apples Your Dog Can Eat

If your dogs are like mine, they’ll eat fruits like apples anytime, anywhere, and anyway you can think to give it to them. Some dogs, like our Rebel, will immediately devour apples without giving it a second thought. Others may need a bit more coercion to realize that they like apples too!

For very small dogs or picky eaters – Start small! Try adding a little shredded apple into their food. Sometimes new flavors and textures can be overwhelming for people and our dogs are the same. Our oldest dog wouldn’t touch an apple a year ago and now he looks forward to eating an entire apple each morning just diced into his bowl but it started with shredded apple first.

Try it sauced – A little unsweetened apple sauce is a wonderful treat for you and your dog! I like to just omit the pumpkin and add a spoonful or two to our dog’s protein-packed yogurt bowls on occasion. They love it!! If you have a small dog or a dog with sensitive teeth this would be a great option too.

We treat with apples in all sorts of ways over here, but this next suggestion is our dog Rebel’s favorite! You see, Rebel is a chewer – it’s all that pit bull in her DNA! She gets bored easily too…which can lead to destructive chewing behaviors.

The halved banana just slips right down into where the core and seeds were, so it isn’t a hard-to-make treat either. As it melts the banana transforms into the consistency of ice cream – creating a lickable melty center to this frozen treat that literally drives her bananas!

Human Foods Dogs Can & Cant Eat : coolguides

1) Chocolate

As much as dark chocolate has reported health benefits for us humans, it doesnt offer the same to our beloved pets.

The main toxic ingredient in chocolate is called theobromine, which is a stimulant and blood vessel dilator.

The more bitter the chocolate is, the worse it is for dogs, although the sweeter chocolate is also bad for your pooch because it contains more sugar.

2) Nicotine

Nicotine acts very quickly once ingested, so symptoms such as drooling, vomiting, breathing trouble, tremors, lack of coordination, and seizures may develop within an hour.

Smoking is a relaxant for humans, so imagine the effects of it on a pet even death can occur if the dose is high enough.

Nicotine gum can be even worse due to the presence of artificial sweeteners.

3) Xylitol

This popular sweetener can cause extreme low blood sugar in dogs, and can also cause liver failure.

Dont fall into the trap of thinking that feeding your dog something sugar-free is okay xylitol is a very common sugar-replacer, and is actually a worse toxin than sugar for your pup.

A large percentage of xylitol poisoning cases are caused by the pup eating sugar-free chewing gum.

4) Raw Eggs

While some advocate the feeding of raw eggs to give your pups coat a shine, others worry about the risks of high cholesterol.

Raw eggs are packed with amino acids and essential fats, but too many raw eggs can lead to a deficiency of a certain B vitamin called biotin. Theres also the risk of salmonella poisoning.
