The largest federal regulator of pet foods in the U.S. is the Food and Drug Administration . Two other federal organizations include the U.S. Department of Agriculture , along with the Federal Trade Commission . One more organization that oversees pet food is the Association of American Feed Control Officials .

What To Do If Your Dogs Food Is Recalled

If your dogs food has been recalled, stop feeding the food immediately. The food should be returned to the store where it was purchased, and you may be able to obtain a refund. Or, you may properly dispose of the food in a manner that prevents other animals from gaining access to it.

If your dog has already been eating the recalled food, consult with your veterinarian to determine what actions, if any, you should take. Even if your dog is not showing any signs of illness, its best to consult with your veterinarian as quickly as possible. Depending upon the reason the food was recalled, your veterinarian will be able to determine what, if any, action should be taken.

If you believe your dog has become ill or has died because of eating a recalled food product, you should file a complaint with the FDA. You can file a report online or contact the FDA consumer complaint coordinator in your state.

If you can no longer feed your dog his usual diet due to a recall, try to find a similar food to replace it or ask your veterinarian for suggestions. Keep in mind that sudden changes in diet can lead to dietary distress for dogs.

Dog food recalls are frequent when theres a suspicion about potential health risks associated with certain ingredients. There are plenty of instances where grain-free products arent actually free of grains. A few products have been called back for issues with taurine . Improper dog food can cause various health issues such as cardiomyopathy in dogs.

The FDA has its own Center for Veterinary Medicine which helps it stay on point with the latest issues that arise in the dog food category. If you believe a certain type of dog food is causing your dogs health problems, you can file a complaint to the FDA directly for an investigation.

But even the FDA doesnt know everything about dog food safety. This is why an investigation can last months until the organization contacts experts in the animal health community. Working closely with the FDA can be one of the main actions to limit the potential recalls with future dog foods that should be made up to standard.

“We are issuing this corporate-wide warning letter because inspections of Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc.’s manufacturing plants revealed evidence of violations, which were shared across multiple plants and were associated with the illness or death of hundreds of pets who had eaten the company’s dry dog food,” Steven Solomon, the director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, wrote in a statement.

The FDA also said it found Midwestern’s food safety programs inadequate to prevent or minimize contamination. The agency gave Midwestern 15 days to respond with a plan of action to correct the violations before it faces legal action.

What Is Aflatoxin Toxicity And What Are Its Symptoms

Aflatoxin is a by-product of a type of mold which can grow in corns and grains used in pet food. This product can even be present in the food without any visible mold. If consumed in high quantity, the product can cause severe illness, liver issues, or even death. Some symptoms of aflatoxin toxicity, also known as aflatoxicosis, are:

  • sluggishness or lethargy
  • a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums
  • diarrhea

Sometimes, a pet can have a damaged liver without any symptoms. Aflatoxin can accumulate in a dogs system over time, causing delayed poisoning. It is advisable to get your pet checked by their veterinarians if they consumed any of the recalled products.

Provide a full diet history to your veterinarian. You may find it helpful to take a picture of the pet food label, including the lot number, FDA stated in their announcement.

Whats A Dog Food Recall Anyway

Warning! These 10 Dog Foods Have Been Recalled (2020 ...

A product recall is a request from the manufacturer to discontinue use of a product after the discovery of safety issues or defects that might put the consumer at risk. When it comes to dog food, there are two types of recall:

  • An FDA-issued recall
  • A voluntary recall
  • When the FDA issues a recall, its typically in response to customer complaints or based on the discovery of a problem when testing the product. Anything from potential contamination with a dangerous pathogen to inconsistencies with product packaging can trigger an FDA recall.

A voluntary recall is one initiated by the manufacturer itself. The manufacturer might recall the product if it tests too low in a certain nutrient, if a problem is discovered with one of the ingredients, or if theres a problem with the formulation, processing, or packing of the product.

Sometimes, a voluntary recall is issued in anticipation of an FDA recall with the hopes that taking early action might reduce the negative impact of the recall on the brand.

    Blue Buffalo Warnings & Lawsuits

Before we detail the recall history for Blue Buffalo, we first want to alert readers to the fact that, in late , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration identified Blue Buffalo as one of 16 pet food brands that may be linked to heart disease in dogs and cats.

None of those 16 brands have been recalled as part of the agencys ongoing investigation, though. Most, but not all, of the pet foods are grain-free and/or dry dog food formulations.

The FDA says this is a complex scientific issue that may involve multiple factors, and that it cannot even be certain that diet is a cause of the heart problems. For full details, see our article on the subject.

We also want to point out that despite rumors, there has been no so-called Blue Buffalo lead recall. A lawsuit filed in claimed that 3 Blue Buffalo dog foods contained very high levels of lead, but the lawsuit was dismissed by a judge in 2018.

The company had this to say in response to the lead lawsuit:

Blue Buffalo strongly denies these allegations, which represent the unsubstantiated claims of one person, and have not been supported by any evidence or data.

More recently, in , the brand once again came under fire when a customer in New York sued Blue Buffalo for allegedly making her dog overweight and diabetic. Plaintiff Shannon Walton said she had been moved to buy Blue Buffalo dog food because the formula was strongly marketed as being inspired by a wolf diet.

On Thursday, the FDA posted an advisory to alert consumers of a recall on varieties of the following six dog food brands: Triumph, Evolve, Wild Harvest, Nurture Farms, Pure Being, and Elm.

Specific flavors, lot numbers, UPC codes, and “best by” dates of the recalled dog foods can be found in the table below, as published by the FDA.

The recall was issued after the brands’ manufacturer, Sunshine Mills, Inc., identified the presence of “potentially elevated levels of aflatoxin above the acceptable limit.” The FDA explains that “aflatoxin poisoning can also occur if a pet eats moldy corn, grains, peanuts, or other aflatoxin contaminated food . . . even if there is no visible mold on the pet food.”

In these cases, the FDA says aflatoxin exposure may lead to any of the following symptoms:

In Thursday’s announcement, Sunshine Mills stated that “no illnesses have been reported in association with these products to date.” They also suggest that pets should be seen by a veterinarian if they exhibit any of the above symptoms after consuming one of recalled dog foods.

      Latest Dog Food Recalls 2020

      01/11/2021

Not only does the FDA put out recalls, but they can also put out warnings for dog food, too. One recent FDA dog food warning came in July of 2018, when they alerted pet parents and veterinarians about the possible tie between grain-free dog foods and heart disease. The FDA has warned that canine grain-free diets containing legumes , lentils, peas or potatoes could cause a specific heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. The FDA had received reports that seemed to indicate this condition had been diagnosed in dog breeds that are not usually affected by this type of heart trouble: whippets, Shih Tzu, bulldog, miniature schnauzers, Labrador retrievers and even some mixed breeds.

Rather than being a recall, the FDA issued the warning as further testing and research are still needed to determine if DCM is actually being caused by grain-free diets for dogs.

As you can see, the FDA has the authority to deliver warnings as well as recalls about pet foods and our pets health.

Its important to note that dog food manufacturers often do a voluntary recall in order to keep from getting the FDA involved. This helps the company avoid some bad press, though of course the news gets out pretty fast anyway.

It just looks better when a company voluntarily chooses to let us know about possible issues with their dog food.
