There have been recalls on Purinas dog food in previous years, but none recently. The last Purina dog chow recall was in March 2016. This recall included Purina Pro Plan wet dog food sold in tubs. The food was recalled because of inadequate vitamin/mineral levels. In 2013, another recall occurred on Purina ONE dog food for risk of salmonella contamination.
Where Was The Product Sold
The recalled Beef HVM was distributed in DC, MD, VA, DE, PA, MA, CT, and SC and product was distributed through mail order and direct delivery from 7/27/21 to 8/2/21.
The Beef HVM comes in a 1-pound package marked with lot #071521 on the bottom right corner of the label.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the Beef HVM 1-pound packages in question.
Why Are Fromm Family Canned Dog Food Products Being Recalled
Fromm Family Foods recalled the above products due to a possibility of excess vitamin D. At this time, no incidents of canine illness or health complications from consuming these foods have been reported.
Fromms announcement in an FDA release says that the recall was initiated after we discovered, through our own analysis, that these products may contain elevated levels of Vitamin D. We have identified and isolated the error, and in addition to our existing safety process, we have put corrective actions into place to prevent this from happening again.

Concerns About Boutique Dog Food
The FDA is looking into a possible link between DCM in dogs and the ingredients in certain boutique pet foods the DCM is caused by a taurine deficiency and has been most notable in certain breeds like golden retrievers. While the FDA havent named any brands yet, most involved are smaller, boutique companies like those in this list. In a recent article of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Lisa Freeman, DVM, Ph.D., DACVN, explained the issue is not just grain-free diets, but rather, BEG diets .
The apparent link between BEG diets and DCM may be due to ingredients used to replace grains in grain-free diets, such as lentils or chickpeas, but also may be due to other common ingredients commonly found in BEG diets, such as exotic meats, vegetables, and fruits, Freeman wrote.

More research needs to be done, and for now, its best to check with your vet about any concerns. Dr. Freeman also recommends purchasing food from companies that employ veterinary nutritionists and other experts.

Dog Treats May Be Recalled Too
A dogs daily diet isnt the only cause for concern edible treats and even non-edible toys can experience recalls as well. Edible treats like bones and dog snacks are just as vulnerable to contaminants as kibble and wet food, and toys may contain loose pieces or parts that dogs could swallow or choke on.
These recalls can be even more elusive to find than dog food recalls, so its important for pet parents to stay informed by checking notices online and at their pet store chain of choice when they introduce new toys and treats. Blue Buffalo Warnings & Lawsuits
Before we detail the recall history for Blue Buffalo, we first want to alert readers to the fact that, in late , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration identified Blue Buffalo as one of 16 pet food brands that may be linked to heart disease in dogs and cats.
None of those 16 brands have been recalled as part of the agencys ongoing investigation, though. Most, but not all, of the pet foods are grain-free and/or dry dog food formulations.

Ol Roys is a Walmart brand that has been in production since 1981. This specific recipe from the brand is crafted for adult canines of all sizes with essential nutrients to provide a balanced diet.
Its billed as an inexpensive pet food due to lack of advertising and promotion, but if you look closely at the ingredients, youll see another reason why.
Well list the first six ingredients here: Ground Whole Grain Corn, Meat and Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Rice Bran, Animal Fat , and Poultry By-Product Meal. And most of these are problematic.
We dont have anything against corn. Grains are okay too. In fact, these are healthy ingredients to have in dog food. But within reasonable quantities and never as the most significant part of a diet. In this recipe, the corn and grains make up the most volume and overwhelm the meat.
Second thing, the meats are all unspecified. Theyre labelled as meat and bone meal and poultry byproduct meal. The labels dont indicate exactly what animal the meat comes from and which parts were used.
Lastly, the food contains artificial colors and artificial preservatives .
Recall Info: There has been no recall yet for this formulation, although the Ol Roy brand has been involved in several recalls since 1998. The most recent one was in 2018 where samples of its Gravy Train line were found to contain traces of sodium pentobarbital.

If we estimate the products meat content, it shows that it contains about 24% protein content, 13% fat, and about 54% carbohydrates.
After analyzing these numbers, it is clear this is a poor choice and is just a bit above average compared to other high-quality dog foods.

Whats A Dog Food Recall Anyway
A product recall is a request from the manufacturer to discontinue use of a product after the discovery of safety issues or defects that might put the consumer at risk. When it comes to dog food, there are two types of recall:
When the FDA issues a recall, its typically in response to customer complaints or based on the discovery of a problem when testing the product. Anything from potential contamination with a dangerous pathogen to inconsistencies with product packaging can trigger an FDA recall.
A voluntary recall is one initiated by the manufacturer itself. The manufacturer might recall the product if it tests too low in a certain nutrient, if a problem is discovered with one of the ingredients, or if theres a problem with the formulation, processing, or packing of the product.

Worst Adult Dry Dog Food: Iams Proactive Health
The primary ingredient in IAMS Proactive Health Adult Chunks dry dog food is chicken.
Though chicken is a quality item and raw chicken comprises about 80% water, but when cooked, most of the water is lost, which reduces the meat content to just a portion of its initial weight.
After processing, these ingredients would probably account for a smaller fraction of the whole content of the finished food.
The second ingredient is cornmeal which is coarse ground flour made from the dried corn. Corn is a controversial and inexpensive cereal grain of low nutritional value to a dog.
For that reason, it is not a preferred part of any dog food.
The third ingredient of this product is sorghum , a starchy cereal grain with a similar nutrient profile to corn.
Because it is gluten-free and claims a smoother blood sugar performance than other grains, sorghum may be considered a satisfactory non-meat ingredient.
The fourth ingredient is chicken by-product meal, which is a dry product of the slaughterhouse waste.
This meal is made after all prime cuts have been separated, which includes almost anything left, including beaks, feet, and even undeveloped eggs, anything except the feathers.
But on the bright side, these portions are meat concentrates and comprise protein approximately 300% more than the fresh chicken.
The fifth ingredient is beet pulp, a controversial ingredient, as it is a high fiber by-product made of sugar beet processing.

What Is The List Of Recalled Pet Food 2021
On December 30, 2020, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. announced a recall of nine total lots of Sportmix pet food products. On January 11, 2021, Midwestern expanded the recall . FDA and the Missouri Department of Agriculture are working with the firm to determine whether any additional products may have been made with the same ingredients containing potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin. As new information becomes available, this product list may continue to expand.

On January 11, 2021, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. expanded the recall to include all pet food products containing corn that were made in the firms Oklahoma plant and that expire on or before July 9, 2022. More than 1000 lot codes are affected so they are not listed individually.
Lots of the following pet food products have been recalled if the date/lot code includes an expiration date on or before 07/09/22 and includes 05 in the date/lot code, which identifies products made in the Oklahoma plant:

This makes the top of our worst dog foods list because of the sheer number of dogs that were affected by the aflatoxin levels found in several Sportsmix products, including this one.
Many pets have died and many more were left ill.
But even without the aflatoxin situation, this recipe was not a particularly good one to begin with. We normally like dog foods that start with a meat ingredient because that shows that meat makes up the most volume in the recipe. However, we arent sold on byproducts, and this recipe starts with one.
When byproducts are mentioned, it means this is what is leftover after the meat is removed. So a chicken byproduct meal is essentially dried out chicken leftovers that may include organs but also other stuff like hide, hair, or intestinal contents .
Are these harmful to your dogs? No. Are these nutritious? They can be. But are these high-quality ingredients? Definitely not.
Aside from the byproduct meal ingredient, this recipe also contains meat meal. But that ingredient is ambiguous. What animal was used? Which part/s?
The thing about unnamed ingredients is that it could mean anything. The meat could be sourced from one animal or it could be sourced from several. Its not a quality ingredient, thats for sure.
The recall involved 50- and 44-pound bags of Premium High Energy with an expiration of either March 2 or 3, 2022. The recall was later expanded to include more recipes and the updated toll numbered over 70 dogs dead and at least 80 more ill.

Dog Food Recalled Due To Elevated Levels Of Vitamin D
FDA: Dog food recall over high levels of mold byproduct expands
The dog food recall was initiated over concerns the products contain above-limit levels of aflatoxin, a mold byproduct.
Wet Noses Natural Dog Treat Company recalled approximately 51,000 packages of Simply Nourish dog food due to it containing elevated levels of vitamin D, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration .
The FDA advised consumers to immediately stop feeding the products to their pets. Affected Simply Nourish frozen dog food products were distributed at PetSmart stores nationwide.

The recall includes products that are packaged in 2lb and 4.5lb packages with the “best by” date ranging from 11/10/2022 to 1/13/2023.
Dogs ingesting elevated levels of vitamin D may experience vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss.
When consumed at very high levels or over an extended period of time, vitamin D can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.
People with dogs who may have consumed Simply Nourish frozen products and are exhibiting symptoms of illness should contact their veterinarian, the FDA suggests.
The recall was initiated after a routine nutrition test confirmed elevated vitamin D in select Simply Nourish frozen food products.
As a result, the dosage was not reduced in the pet food.
